Hi Patrick.

What bugs me more is the reaction to those who do not believe some of it. Like we do not love her as much, nor honor her as much, even ignore her and have less depth of understanding or appreciating her, or are sex crazed (not seeing her perpetual virginity), like one reality is “fuller” than another. Or that what is today has always been with Marion doctrine, that it is all apostolic, from the apostles and the very first churches.

There is no better honor, and love, and appreciation, and depth, than rendering her truthfully. No more, no less.

Yeah, that was one of those things I had to deal with as a Evangelical. Even if the charge of Catholics honoring Mary too much is true, why is it that we, practically speaking, don’t honor her much, at all?

What bothers me is that the teachings about the Mother of God are not talked about enough.

And there in lies the rub … Mary cannot be both “perpetually Virgin” and not … so ask the same question Pilot asked … “What is Truth?”

By reference to 'what is today has not always been … or Apostolic in origin , and by such I think you mean ‘what Catholics’ believe … but everyone of the early Protestant Reformers believed in the perpetual virginity of Mary … so where does that leave us …

As far as historical first century Christian beliefs about Mary - one cannot argue for the modern day Bible Christian belief that you would say is the better way to honor her - as it is clearly not there in the historical record. Instead we see early Christians wrestling with whether Jesus was fully God and not truly human, or purely human but indwelled by God … or both God and Man- . Out of this gut wrenching difference of beliefs … The Church determined that Jesus was both fully Human and fully Divine - that Jesus possessed two Natures … and during all that debate over The Truth about Jesus … the Church concluded that Mary was the Mother of God [a truth] by virtue of being the Mother of Jesus.

Mary always and everywhere - throughout time and place - leads us to her Son - our elder Brother, our Lord, our Savior …

Mary tells us “do whatever He tells you to do”

Jesus asked “who is my mother… ? The one who does the will of my Father” … Mary doing the will of the Father said “Be it done unto me according to they Word” … there is no finer example of submission to the will of God.

Mary remained faithful even at the foot of the Cross …

Mary intercedes for us … “they have no wine…”

Mary is our Mother - given to us by Jesus from the Cross - we are commanded to honor our Mother …

Perhaps that will help you understand why some people seem offended when you seem to disrespect Mary - Personally I am saddened that many Christians don’t get to know her and her Son better

the only thing i could say to a 10,000+ post veteran roman catholic board veteran: what bugs me me about Marian dogma is that despite Mary’s pleas the Rosary is not said every day by every catholic

Once upon a time I had some issues, but not since reading Hail, Holy Queen, by Scott Hahn.

I admire, respect and love Mary for the immense and potentially terrifying request from God to accept His request to become the place for Christ to begin His life on Earth as an incarnated human being. She must have had a difficult time actually understanding how God would accomplish this since, as she asked, “How can this be? I am a virgin.” Luke 1:34. Joseph could have become angry and thrown her out and had her stoned but he followed God’s message as well. I honor her as she took her job seriously and, not only helped Joseph bring up this special Son, but also became part of the group of disciples who traveled around with our Messiah.

Before I am chastised by my upcoming answer, I need to tell you that I have printed out all of the great responses my caring Catholic friends have posted in answer to my questions and those of others. I am carefully studying books written by both Catholics and Protestants and have yet to come to a conclusion as to whether I can accept the doctrines developed by Catholics about her as Ever Virgin, Queen of Heaven, and as someone to whom I should make prayers and requests.

These are difficult for one who has grown up in the Protestant faith and I want to be careful to understand and to prayerfully bring it before my Lord and God for true wisdom and knowledge with this.

I would not call any of these areas things which “bug” me - that is much too negative for any who want to discern truth but I will say that perusing some of the “Early Church Father” writings I don’t see much information related to this doctrine. As the years progress there may be more material becomes available and I am using this info as I study both Catholic and Protestant teaching.

I am assuming Patrick is asking possibly to develop information for his studies that he shares with those who are seeking knowledge about Catholic doctrine about Mariology. I will discuss with others in a kindly exchange of information but not any put-downs concerning what I’ve learned so far. When we begin to become emotionally charged about a doctrine we have known from childhood we sometimes become uncharitable toward others on all sides of the topics and that sets up an exchange which people will not “listen” and shut down. It’s not a really good way to share something which one would like others to possibly gain a positive understanding of your beliefs.

I look forward to our discussion!

God bless, friends!!
In His love,

Rita

Not sure how to break this to you or your readers Patrick, but sadly Mary or Marian devotionals has become moot to the Christian movement. All you have to do is google “Christian devotionals” and Mary or Marian devotionals are very hard to find. Mary has been replaced by other well know Christians telling us how to act, who we should listen to, or praying for us.

Peace!!!

i don’t think that any who practices catholicism beyond google searching could possibly say that Marian devotion is obsolete. go to any vibrant, thriiving catholic parish and prayer to Mary is the bedrock.

Excellent book. 👍

One of the issues is that many common Marian doctrines have clear Biblical support, we just need to know where to look. This is a good way to debate, using the Bible, since this is the common ground Catholics have with Sola Scriptura Protestantism.

When I started reading Scott Hahn’s book and saw the parallelism between John 1-2, and Genesis 1-2, it just blew my mind.

So many people I know have left the Catholic Church for other Christian churches. Right here on this forum, many who post are listed as ex. or former Catholics. Mary is for me the reason why I could never, ever leave the Catholic Faith…I’d miss the living daylights out of her! 😊 😉

Peace, Mark

Thanks. You make my point. You do however illumine the fact that both sides can exaggerate.
