Mayor Bill de Blasio and Cardinal Timothy Dolan today met for the first time since Mr. de Blasio’s election and vowed to join forces to try to bring Pope Francis to New York City.
Emerging after a 45-minute meeting at the cardinal’s residence in Midtown, the ever-jolly Mr. Dolan and an excited Mr. de Blasio talked about how much they had in common, including a desire to bring the new pontiff to the city for a visit.

He was elected by a 73% majority of New Yorkers, despite a number of anti-Catholic planks in his platform, including:
  • He has pledged to partner with Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, helping them to expand their businesses, even providing “city-sponsored” space to set up shop.
  • At the same time, he pledged to help abortionists to wipe out their main competition, pro-life pregnancy centers—which he refers to as “sham” clinics which are not “legitimate health care centers.” (Pro-life pregnancy centers offer women financial and logistical assistance to either keep their babies or place them with adoptive families, but they do not perform abortions.)
  • He supports a pending appeal by the City of New York of a court order striking down a law aimed at closing pro-life pregnancy centers. If the court appeal fails, de Blasio pledges to “craft new regulations to prevent [crisis pregnancy] centers from masquerading as legitimate health care providers.”
  • He supports a NARAL-backed program begun under Mayor Michael Bloomberg to force doctors who train in city hospitals to perform abortions as a routine part of their training. This is intended to ensure that there are a sufficient number of abortionists to meet the high demand in the city.
  • He has pledged to use ObamaCare to expand state funding for abortion, so that more New York women will have access to abortions.
  • He plans to raise taxes on some 7,000 to 10,500 vacant residential lots, many of which are owned by the Roman Catholic Church. De Blasio’s plan calls for a five-year phase-in period, after which owners of the vacant lots could expect tax hikes averaging $15,300 annually. Crain’s reports that the plan is intended to spur development of housing; but critics doubt that the higher taxes would have the desired effect.

I can understand that Cardinal Dolan wants to be respectful and friendly to Bill de Blasio but I hope Cardinal Dolan is going to speak out against the issues which are highlighed in the following article although Cardinal Dolan has already spoke out against the abortion rate in New York City:

The last thing we should want is for the image and “aura” of Pope Francis to be co-opted and used by the likes of the “progressive” mayor of New York and the pro-abortion political leadership of New York City, New York State, and the United States. I fervently hope for no visit until we have a regime change in the U.S.

Perfect 👍

But I remember the video of John Paul II chewing out a priest in public for violating a specific teaching. He won’t do it but it would be great to see Francis take the Mayor to the mat in similar fashion!

You people really don’t get the Pope, do you?

Jesus brought people to Himself, not by shunning them, but by going to them and speaking to their hearts. This Pope would just be following His example by visiting the U.S.

How sad it would be if Pope Francis shared your paranoid fear of the so-called liberal media (the overwhelming majority of which are owned by Conservative Republicans) and chose not to visit his flock here.

Off topic, this is the first time I have ever seen a news source not follow the custom of using the appropriate honorific when referring to a religious figure. “Mr. Dolan?”

Edited because I hope His Holiness visits his “flock” and not his “flick.”

“You people” – how charitable and un-divisive.

We can’t no for sure that Jesus didn’t shun certain people, but we do know that he taught the Apostles to shun Jewish communities that rejected the Gospel. We also know He actively intended to shun the Samaritan woman at the well, but relented because of her faith.

I agree! But let’s quit pretending the wolf in the sheepfold just needs a little TLC. DeBlasio is an enemy of the faith.

We’re not afraid. We’re aware of the agenda and would rather spare Holy Mother Church the ignominy of getting played like a grand piano.

Who are these “conservative republicans?” Ted Turner? (CNN); Leslie Moonves? (CBS) Anne Sweeney? (ABC-Disney-ESPN) Brian Roberts? (Comcast-NBC-MSNBC) Even Rupert Murdoch (FOX) was a huge supporter of Tony Blair.

Might want to retract…

I like +Dolan, I really do, but he is such a politician; when I see him slapping the backs of liberals like this in photo-ops, it just makes me wish that the next Archbishop will hand out excommunications just as readily as that.

That’s because the priest, as a Jesuit, would expect that sort of thing, and his vows mean there is a chance of success (IIRC he eventually returned to obedience). The Mayor, on the other hand, may not feel he has an obligation to even listen, so a public, as opposed to private, admonition might not have any effect.

I’d love it if he’d come to the city that is his pontifical namesake, San Francisco!

Granted, San Francisco isn’t as Catholic a city as it was in the early days, but I think a visit would do a lot of good to invigorate the faithful here and would be a wonderful opportunity for outreach.

The op-eds, not the owners, make the leaning of a medium.

So de Blasio can try to co-opt the Church while pushing his anti-Catholic garbage.

You’d think the US Bishops would learn after Obamacare (if we play nice they’ll be nice to us! They like us, they really like us) but noooooo.

The real problem with the Pope meeting with liberal politicians who are doing their very best to remove God’s blessing of the USA by supporting child sacrifice and homosexuality is that it justifies by association said politicians policies to millions of confused Catholics, thus causing them to continue blindly swallowing the camel and straining out the gnat.

People would really rather the Pope not come to the U.S. at all than that he come while politicians they don’t like are in office? I’m sorry, I just don’t understand that sentiment.

I don’t care who is in office, a papal visit would be an immense blessing. How many good Catholics things cropped up in Denver after John Paul II’s visit there?

Let’s not ascribe any more power to the politicians than they already have. The grace of the Holy Spirit is much more powerful than the political spin factory.

I’m all for the pope going to the US, meeting our politicians like Blasio is another thing altogether though.
