Media say Pope may resign in April

I didn’t realize resignation was an option for a Pope. Isn’t this a renunciation of God’s appointment???
 
If the Holy Father resigns, I will be crushed. I will be totally heartbroken… 😦

So would I! 😦

I’m afraid that if he does resign, all the work he has done so far (‘freeing’ the TLM, the Anglican Ordinariate, overtures to the SSPX and the Easter Orthodox, to mention a few examples) would be all UNDONE by his successor!

I’ll not speculate on the implications, but allowance is made in Canon Law.
Can. 332 §2. If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that the resignation is made freely and properly manifested but not that it is accepted by anyone.

I kind of get a kick out of that last part. 😛

I suspect it’s the same folks who said the same about Pope John Paul II, saying he would resign. Wishful thinking on their part.
