Great, a doctor makes a mistake (they are human) and because the family does not have medical insurance, suing becomes “fight for justice” and saving others from future harm. And we wonder why we have problems with expensive health care in this country.
That’s good. Then you can sue for the morality of obtaining justice rather than money. Or if it requires money be obtained to insure justice you can donate it to a hospital to pay for indigent care right? 👍
Are you guys aware of what the doctor did or did not? How do you know that he was not negligent and that he did not try to cover his butt? Do you understand that moral justice also requires remedy toward the person that has been directly offended? Do you really think that your take from the limited information provided from the OP is better and/or more reasonable than the priest’s assessment?

The OP made the statement this was not about money but morals and justice.

Even if the doctor is guilty of negligence there are ways to seek justice that don’t involve suing. Such as a complaint before the medical board of the hospital and/or a complaint before the state medical examiner board who controls the doctor’s license. Both of these bodies have the ability to restrict the doctor’s practice. If a doctor is found to be practicing negligently and the hospital did or should have known about it, they will often not charge for any care required under their roof as a result of the negligence. Most cases can be settled without suit if one is seeking only to obtain out of pocket costs and not punitive damages.

If the doctor was malicious in his negligence (exceedingly rare), then that should be a criminal matter.

This has gotten way off the subject, and in a direction that is not worth continuing. I posted my question to see if anyone saw a moral problem with paying insurance companies that cover abortions.

I asked this question on another forum and got the answer I think best settles it for me:
Used to be insurance was welcome and comforting, now it’s a necessary evil…

You are right. This is getting off topic. It is not a simple issue either from the monitary standpoint or the moral standpoint.
I think you are very wise to take this up with your priest.

Having read how responsible you are, I believe that whatever decision you make will be moral because you are placing God at the head of your family and seeking His will. Also you are informing your conscience by praying on the matter and seeking the (name removed by moderator)ut of others. With these factors in place I’m sure you will make the best decision for you, and you will be prepared to deal with any of the consequences (good or ill) that arise from that decision.

May God continue to bless you and your family with His many graces

Peace
James
