So I went to a nephrologist today. I’ve been taken off a prescription medication I’ve been on for years because it is stressing my kidneys. One option she discussed to replace the medication that was discontinued was medical marijuana. My primary care physician also brought this up to me before. I do have some personal reservations about marijuana because I’ve seen it ruin lives. I don’t have an addictive personality, so I’m not worried about that. Does anyone know what the Catholic teaching, if any, is on medical marijuana?
I’d appreciate any sincere (name removed by moderator)ut.

Yet none of them answer my question. If you can’t help, please don’t post.
You might not want to be so quick to bite the hand that feeds you…
If your that concerned about the implications to your Catholic dogma and beliefs speak with your priest and not an Internet forum of strangers.

Medical marijuana is not a sin. Recreational marijuana is not a sin if used in moderation where it’s legal.

I’ve done some digging on this topic before and found nothing official from the Vatican. Notify your priest, but assuming your intentions are pure and medical marijuana is legal where you live, you’ll probably get a green light.

Pharmaceutical products and other medical interventions can be used for good or evil.
Personally, I’m fifty-fold more concerned about the medical opioid addiction crisis than medical marijuana.
However, there are many unsubstantiated claims surrounding marijuana and its supposed benefits.
This is a conversation best held between the OP and his/her health care provider.

Usually its the CBD part of the plant that is considered to of be of benefit - you should be able to get it in capsule form and it has no effect on you.

Is the plant form the only way it will help your condition, IE smoking or eating it? Or can your condition be treated by the oil or other forms which don’t have the effects on your mental status?

With as many states that have legalized some form of it, the feds are going to have to come off their ban on research so more can be learned.

Here is an article about some of the obstacles which the feds have kept in place along with noted benefits.

I don’t have any info on the Church’s stance on when it is or isn’t acceptable. Sorry.

Thank you. Intentions are definitely pure. I’ve never used illegal drugs or abused legal ones. I’m hesitant to try this, but they are taking away other options as other medical conditions are popping up. I’ve now had two doctors recommend this. It’s making me very anxious because it involves the quality of life for me.

You have been given some great replies…

It is an opiate derived drug.
As are:

Novocain
Lidocaine
xylocaine
morphine
Codeine
Fentanyl (Actiq, Duragesic, Fentora, Abstral, Onsolis)
Hydrocodone (Hysingla, Zohydro ER)
Hydrocodone/acetaminophen (Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, Vicodin)
Hydromorphone (Dilaudid, Exalgo)
Meperidine (Demerol)
Methadone (Dolophine, Methadose)
Morphine (Kadian, MS Contin, Morphabond)
Oxycodone (OxyContin, Oxaydo)
Oxycodone and acetaminophen (Percocet, Roxicet)
Oxycodone and naloxone

Then you have synthetics…which some people do not tolerate as well.

So chances are if you’ve been to a dentist or had any of the above drugs you have already had a form of it.
It has been used for patients with glaucoma, chronic pain, cancer patients, for anxiety and PTSD, for nausea…and many other uses.

Speak more with your doctor about your concerns and PLEASE speak with your priest…

Now does that make you feel better?

I know I can’t smoke anything. Asthma. I’m not sure what form is used in Pennsylvania. I need to speak to either my pain management doctor or my PCP.

It comes in edible forms, the THC is reduced to an oil and used in many different form of ingestibles.
I use CBD but it does in no way give you the same effects as pure THC.

Is it prescribed in a pill form with dosage guidelines? I see no problem with that. When I hear of people walking out of the medical marijuana dispensaries with boxes full of the stuff and then going home and smoking it through a bong all day I’m not sure what that has to do with anything medical.

Whilst this article Marijuana Legality and Morality FATHER RAYMOND J. DE SOUZA deals with marijuana use and not specifically CBD medical use, there is one part in it that says ““With the exception of cannabis use for medicinal purposes, consuming marijuana violates the virtue of temperance and should be avoided,” said Monsignor Frank Leo, general secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops”.

The Smoke over Medical Marijuana ← pdf file opens June 2018 by Father Tad Pacholczyk, Director of Education, The National Catholic Bioethics Center.

On page 2 of this document it says wrt medical marijuana “Several different cannabinoid medications have been developed in recent years, and these medicines work as well as or better than marijuana, have fewer side effects, and are less likely to be abused. These drugs also tend to be effective in the body for longer periods.”

Thank you for the article. My issue is neuropathy and severe arthritis, so it may be helpful. I’ve been on hydrocodone and Celebrex since 2006. No addiction problems with the opioids since I’m very careful with them. The Celebrex and all NSAIDS are what I need to stop. I hate this. It’s worked so well for years.

Thank you for the article
No problem. I was hoping that the Search Function would’ve proved more useful for you but unfortunately it doesn’t work very good 😅

From what I’ve seen, Information on this subject is a bit sparse

“Usually” but not always…Depends on the indication being treated…as someone previously stated, the beneficial effects (as well as the hazards) should be discussed with your doctor.

I can’t see anything wrong with it. It’s legal for medicinal purposes. Your intention is not to become a burnout but to get pain relief and improve your quality of life. If it can help you and the doctors are recommending it, I think you can try it without any concerns about going against God’s will. BTW, I have neuropathy too, but mine is all weakness, not pain. so far. You’re in my prayers!

I agree 75% - can’t agree with CBD having “no effect on you”. CBD can have an effect on a person if they never tried it before and don’t follow the instructions on the label.

Full disclosure: For 20+ years I’ve worked in the same health food store. I take medication so I have to be very careful when taking supplements.
