Medjugorje or Rome

My wife and I are in the beginning stages of planning a trip of a lifetime. We are trying to decide between Rome or Medjugorje. Would welcome (name removed by moderator)ut. Thank you

Holy Land, hands down. Yes, I know you didn’t mention it, but really. If anything first, Holy Land, if possible.

After that, Rome. Make it a point to visit as many churches as possible, but make time for all four major Papal basilicas.

Rome. You’ll have so much to see, you will not be able to fit it all in one trip.

If you would like to see the sites of Marian apparitions in Rome, there are two:
  1. Our Lady of Sion (Vatican Approved) - Mary appeared to Alphonse Ratisbonne, a nonbeliever, in the church of Sant Andrea delle Fratte, and converted him.
  2. The Virgin of Revelation (at Tre Fontane just south of St. Paul Outside the Walls) (Approved for Faith Expression) - Mary appeared to Bruno Cornacchiola, an anti-Catholic Seventh Day Adventist who was considering assassinating the Pope, and his children, in a public park. Bruno was also converted and there is now a nice shrine on the site, which is across the street from Tre Fontane, the site of the beheading of St. Paul.
 
Welcome back! Medjugorje is not yet approved. Despite many who are attracted and/or devoted to it, we have no assurance that it is genuine. I would allow the Church time to speak. Rome, the holy land, Lourdes, Fatima, the Camino de Santiago - many to choose from.

Yes - Although the Church permits pilgrims to visit Medj, I myself prefer to visit the sites of apparitions the Church has actually approved to some degree. There are so many approved apparition sites, there’s not much need to go to Medj.
 
If cost is a consideration perhaps Medjugorje is a possibility. I hear Croatia is a beautiful country.
 
Medjugoje is in Bosnia. It is not far from Croatia but there was a horrible war between the two countries in 1992-1994.

I would go for Rome. It is an amazing place. If you can afford to, do them both. A week in Rome then fly to Dubrovnik, spend a few days in Dubrovnik old town (it’s quite spectacular, I think) and then travel (by coach or private taxi) to Medjugorge for a few days then back to Dubrovnik for a night and catch the flight back the next day. That’s what I would do if I had the time and money to do so.

I’d go to Rome first, and then an approved Marian site. Why not Lourdes or Fatima? It is easy to get to both (especially Lourdes) from Rome.
 
Well, the Church has spoken; the apparitions were alleged to have started in 1981. Rome said, last I heard, that priests were not to set up official pilgrimage but were not forbidden to go there and there have been decades of people noting that going there has been very spiritually beneficial to them. We have no assurance that it is genuine; but we also have no assurance that it is not genuine.

And yes, there are a vast number of places one could go, including Medjugorje as multitudes have done. As long as one is willing to accept that the Church has not passed affirmatively or negatively on the matters, according to Rome, was is free to go there.

Need, however, has not seemed to equate with desire. I do not disagree with your suggestions; I simply do not have a dog in the fight. If I was to go do something (and that seems more and more unlikely) I would do Compestelle (or Compostela).
 
Well, that is speaking without speaking. It is not prohibited, but neither is it approved, leaving the door open to the fact that it could all be contrived, genuine before becoming contrived or???

As I see it, better and more spiritually sound to spend time and money enjoying places that are not in question.

This is an opinion thread, after all.
 
Rome. I would not go to Medjugorje until it is deemed official by the Vatican.
 
Rome, not question

Personally, I’d avoid Medjugorje… Last I heard the CDF instructed the faithful to avoid any events there where the alleged visions are assumed to be true
 
Why choose if you can do more than one?

Although I have been to Medugorje, I concur that as an unapproved site, it probably should not be the “once in a lifetime” destination.

There are pilgrimage itineraries that take in Rome/Jerusalem, Rome/Lourdes, etc. Check.through your archdiocese.

We’re hoping to go to Rome for Christmas.

I would always recommend Rome - it is the Eternal City. Our dear and beloved Holy Father lives there, and it is frightfully easy to see him given how important he is.

To use this analogy, Rome is like a beating heart, and all of the other dioceses in the world are like veins that connect to it - Rome is home to arguably the most important Catholic sites in the world, it is the Eternal City and our Holy Father lives there.

I’d choose Rome, and go to Medjugorje on another trip.

Medjugorje is very popular in Eastern Europe not just for Roman Catholics. People who have been there told me “you just have to go and see for yourself”. I didn’t go. But I looked at some online info and that seemed very disturbing to me. It really look like the Bermuda triangle to me there - some people have beatific visions, others seem to be quite possessed. The messages themselves are generic enough to be fake imho. The Church is sometimes criticized in them so this brings an appeal to them and probably many people think that is the reason why the Vatican doesn’t approve it. But some while back there were some videos on Youtube of nuns who had visions there who did not seem to talk with a visitor from Heaven if you know what I mean. By now probably those videos are deleted because they were pretty disturbing.
People who visited it said only positive things about it made them feel - instant calmness and joy etc.
Rome is a city that functions in itself, not really a religious capital if you know what I mean. Probably if you get a Church trip it could be better. Also go off season because during the tourist season the small old streets are so packed with people you can hardly enjoy anything at all.
