OP, thanks for starting this thread, DH and I are in the exact same situation. All of our Catholic friends are at least an hour away and we only know a couple people in the new city. New parish seems okay but not very active so i think we may look around some more. I prefer to hang with couples just because we have more in common 🤷 and then DH and I can socialize together or separately as we choose with them.

Thanks for the tips Cat. I certainly wouldn’t expect to be served alcohol (or want it) in the middle of a Sunday! MAYBE a glass of wine with dinner but not right after Mass  that seems very unusual to me.
I’m in this situation too. I’ve started to meet people a little bit, but no one I’d really call “friends” at this point, y’know? I’m lonely!

I know how the OP feels. I moved to another country as a newly wed and really struggled to meet other catholic couples. What I did was to pray about it. Oh, and I also am outgoing. I did talk to people, first.

You know, if you say to someone “hi! We’re new here and don’t know anybody… I thought you looked like a nice couple and thought I’d introduce myself” they will most likely react in a positive way. Some people are shy, it is true, and they may not be able to react very enthusiastically. But, most people will be positive and friendly.

The problem we have is this town is all about people being here for generations. Like, people marry their second cousins. That sort of thing. Nobody is rude to us, but they don’t seem to need any new friends. Their social lives are busy, enough, already. We had to start going in to Glasgow to the Latin Mass, where we met some fun young people. They’re all single, however, but they’re our age and good company.

We’ve also started looking into Opus Dei and have met one other couple through that. So, you know… it can happen. It does take a bit of time and work.

What city? My wife and I have much the same situation - although we’ve lived in the parish for 5 years now (and I grew up there…)
I’m from Cincinnati… I made great friends at Old Saint Mary’s. It’s a very orthodox parish in Over The Rhine. Ever been? It’s GORGEOUS and the Mass is fantastic. The people there are just great - people drive in from all over the tristate area to go to Old Saint Mary’s. They’re some very special people and I miss them every single day I’m here in Scotland. 😦

Anyway, since it’s a parish people go to for the liturgy, you don’t have that “this has always been my family’s parish” attitude you sometimes see. People are open to new friends, in other words.

i have to be honest even after Mass at Church if im with my wife and daughter and strangers come up to me and say hey come to my house for awhile. the first thing in my mind is picturingtheir neighbors on 20/20 saying ‘they seemed like such nice quiet people’. i wouldnt go.

now as to the making friends, really i think i have plenty/several it all perspective. and if i was to want to make more it would be married people, preferably already with children mainly so that thered be less events id get invited to. after these past couple of years im sick of weddings. to the point that i know i will never get divorced just so i dont risk having to be in another wedding.
