What a tangled web we weave!

"Griff Harsh, the husband of California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, acknowledged in a statement on Thursday that “it is possible” he received and wrote notes on a letter from the Social Security Administration regarding his former housekeeper, Nicky Diaz Santillan, though he denies any implication of associated wrongdoing.

“While I honestly do not recall receiving this letter, as it was sent to me seven years ago, I can say it is possible that I would’ve scratched a follow up note on a letter like this, which is a request for information to make certain Nicky received her Social Security benefits and W-2 tax refund for withheld wages,” Harsh said in the statement.

Whitman and Harsh have come under intense scrutiny in recent days, after the couple’s former housekeeper publicly accused the two of treating her harshly and knowingly employing her as an undocumented immigrant. Whitman denied the claims in a press conference yesterday and said she and her husband "never received those letters."

This media onslaught against Meg Whitman was predictable. She’s leading in the race for governor and the liberal media are very afraid. I wonder if the msm will do a comparable digging into the past of moonbeam? Probably not.

This is especially bad for Whitman in that she has proposed harsh penalties for those who employ illegals. It’s sort of analogous to those religious leaders who have crusaded against homsexuality only to be revealed as actively practicing homosexuals themselves.

Even today, when hiring a person, that information is not sent in to be verified with the federal government.

It easily could be done, if the state and federal government would cooperate to join the information through a data base but as of yet, they haven’t done that.

Businesses who hire employees, have people fill out an I-9 and a W4 and the employer makes copies of two pieces of identification. In most cases, the employee’s driver’s license and social security card.

Every quarter, the state requires businesses to file a quarterly tax return, in that report, each employee name is listed and the employee’s social security number and the amount of money they have earned. The federal government also requires a quarterly tax return, but only of the sum total monetary amount paid, not the employee names or social security numbers.

If an illegal alien has in hand, a fake driver’s license and a fake social security card, employers are not asked to nor are they required to do a search to verify what has been given to them, either by the state or by the federal government.

The social security numbers, unfortuneately don’t go into a main data base looking for suspisious activity or errors.

I know that men in prison, will sell their SS #'s to persons who illegally import people from Mexico into the U.S.

California’s economy has been driven into bankruptcy in the tens of billions of dollars and one of the people who has the business acumen to straighten in out is being attacked because of some paperwork glitch that may not even be real.

Seems to me that the Democrats are really desperate to remain in power regardless of how much damage they do.

Monte, California’s current governor is a Republican, not a Democrat.

They have that system in place already. Its called E-Verify. The only problem is it does not work. A few years ago a Swift meat packing plants across the country were raided and audited for hiring illegals aliens. Over 600 employees were found to be illegal and ICE made public statements about expected fines and the like. The case very quickly went away when it was revealed that every person ICE found had been passed by the government’s E-Verify system (or Basic Pilot as it was called then). Swift adopted the E-Verify program after it was fined over $200,000 for running extra background checks on people they suspected of being illegal - a violation of their civil rights.

The E-Verify program is wrong about 25% of the time, both with false positives and false negatives.

If the Whitman’s knowingly hired an illegal alien, wouldn’t it have been extremely stupid of them to file all the paperwork for withholding and unemployment too? Even among LEGAL residents its rare that this is done. Zoë Baird showed them how to correctly do it.

While I do not plan to vote for Meg (not crazy about Brown either), this smells really fishy.
I fully believe that while her husband saw the letter, Meg might not have. Also, why did this woman stay employeed for 9 years if she was being abused? This is a Gloria Allred Media Stunt. I think Allred is nothing more than a “media wh*re”

You are assuming she is guilty before all the facts are in. I have no dog in this race, but with Gloria Allred involved, it all looks suspicious to me. What a media hound!

I have no dog in this race either. I live in California, and I will happily cast my vote for Dale Ogden, the Libertarian candidate.

If the story is without merit and Whitman can disprove the charges, then it will be soon forgotten in the 24 hour news cycle. If the charges are true, then it will last a bit longer.

All the more reason to be as squeaky clean as possible whether your democrat or republican.

This is a Coordinated Media / Brown Campaign job.

Gloria Allred! Give me a break.

From Meg Whitman’s Husband
“While I honestly do not recall receiving this letter, as it was sent to me seven years ago, I can say it is possible that I would’ve scratched a follow up note on a letter like this, which is a request for information to make certain Nicky received her Social Security benefits and W-2 tax refund for withheld wages. Since we believed her to be legal, I would have had no reason to suspect that she would not have filled it in and done what was needed to secure her benefits.
Code:
“It is important to note what this letter actually says: ‘**this letter makes no statement about your employee’s immigration status**.’
Code:
“The essential fact remains the same, neither Meg nor I believed there was a problem with Nicky’s legal status and I certainly don’t recall ever discussing it with my wife, nor did I ever show her any letter about it. The facts of this matter are very clear: Ms. Diaz broke the law and lied to us and to the employment agency. When she confessed her deception to us last year, we ended her employment immediately. Meg and I played by the rules and followed the law. Ms. Diaz did not. If, as she claims, she received this letter and note of inquiry from me, she never answered my request to look into this. Instead, she choose to continue her deception. This entire matter is a sad one and it’s timing is clearly the result of a calculated and cynical political smear by Meg’s opponents.”
Which doesn’t seem like excuse making, or evasiveness but pretty honest and thorough, adults responding to stupid Campaign Circus stuff.
One doesn’t need all the information to notice what this it is.
It’s a big yawnnnn…

So basically they’re trying to play up the headlines, “WHITMAN HAD AN ILLEGAL ALIEN SHE MUST BE A HYPOCRITE”
who she fired when it was found out in 2009 since her maid was through an employee service. So Meg Whitman’s the victim of a bad system, and lack of federal checks, and someone falsifying their SS# but Meg Whitman’s the bad guy?

So they try to use some 2002 letter that the EMPLOYEE “Nikki” held onto…
Which had her husband’s “handwriting” on it as proof that they were aware,
except the actual letter was a Social Security service asking about, information discrepancy letter that many clients and employers received which wasn’t implicating her citizenshi…But because the Husband, who is a successful physician, and Meg Whitman who is a billionaire, are supposed to notice anything out of the ordinary, on clerical stuff like this ???
One measly letter that they would not even think twice about, and if you read the letter itself, has nothing to really merit a red flag, in the first place??
Who obviously busy people get tons of these types of letters
…and the letter itself, which says it has no implications on their immigrant status, and says the employers cant’ do anything about it (’this letter is no basis to use to take action on the employee’ etc. etc. ) , itself…is supposed to be some sort of scandal???

so this illegal alien, holds onto the letter, and now all of a sudden conveniently, Gloria Allred and them claim to have a case against Whitman, because Whitman owes her money for having driven the car to the groceries? and wants reimbursement for mileage?

yet she (the maid and Gloria) filed the claim on TUESDAY, after the first California debate. So the Maid says to Gloria Allred, “Oh sure, make me vulnerable to the law, let my illegal immigration be known put my status in this country in peril, I want my GAS MONEY from that evil Meg Whitman” yes let’s file the claim on September 28…

This kind of lame smear job, and LA times, SF newspaper cycle, national media coverage, only gives more incentive to vote for Whitman.

Whitman is way better than Governor Moonbeam. I’d vote for her, regardless because she’ll be BETTER THAN ARNOLD SCHWARZEKENNEDY.

This unnecessary news cycle on this lame story, indicates to me that she actually might be a threat to the fiscally irresponsible Democratic PIG TROUGH in California…and she won’t be married to a KENNEDY to neutralize and disarm her either.

This is especially bad for Whitman in that she has proposed harsh penalties for those who employ illegals. It’s sort of analogous to those religious leaders who have crusaded against homsexuality only to be revealed as actively practicing homosexuals themselves.
Actually in the case of Meg Whitman, it is not analogous, maybe with Governor Brewer (Having to hire a bunch of illegals)…
but that analogy STILL is false, because the Employer HAS to ACTIVELY and KNOWINGLY employ cheap illegal labor to actually be an accurate analogy. **This isn’t the case of Meg Whitman’s situation at all **since it was the fault of the employee, and a non-existent enforcement of fraud happening to employee services.

Another point is, Whitman isn’t even that hard on immigration as conservatives. She’s centrist. She’s not even conservative, she’s more just a moderate Republican with no rock solid foundation of conservatism so she’s pretty much business as a candidate.
You know why, we’re hearing about this non-story, and Headline Grabber?? because, regardless of the voters who see through this transparent smear job…the lesser educated, less political voters can be peeled off. They went with this BECAUSE , Meg Whitman isn’t as a hardliner as other Republicans, and conservatives on the immigration issue, and Meg Whitman has for a little bit of her campaign pandering to the Latino community, a little bit, if one had to infer, maybe the Brown campaign’s internal information knew of this that Whitman might be able, to pull some of the latino vote and usual Democrat demographic, because of her rhetoric, and they use this, because they know people who aren’t up to speed, not astute, uneducated, and/or biased, just HEAR something like this "so she was mean to a Maid, and she hired an illegal , and is a big mean witch to an illegal for something…some Lawyer is suing her for some bad treatment " that’s how the apolitical, translate news cycles , by digesting information in a haphazard way…

Plus Jerry Brown is like one of those standard Politician, Prototypical Obama mode, “sound really good campaigning, please everyone during the campaign in rhetoric” then inflict Statist policies that ridiculous…

Whitman seems like the lesser evil conservatives would hold their nose for.
As a Catholic, what little incentive I’d had, I’d vote for Whitman because she pledges to actually defend and uphold the appeal for Prop 8 and the voters’ say on the Prop 8 decision as Governor, which GOV ARNOLD refused to do, cuz he likes the gay marriage, and he’s supposed to be a Catholic!

There is talk among the legal experts re: ethics of Gloria Allred exposing a client to criminal charges. This hispanic woman was hired thru an agency & paid $23 per hour, using a false SS # & signing legal documents stating she was a legal resident of the state of Calif. Meg Whitman is a pro-choice type of Republican — I think she has written something against late term abortions.

Yes, unfortunately Meg Whitman, She’s like a Guiliani, or early Mitt Romney republican running in a blue state.
Meg Whitman voted against Gay Marriage in California apparently and will appeal to uphold Pro 8. Fiorina’s actually better because she is pro-life and against Gay Marriage while running in California and isn’t the "lesser evil " candidate (BOXER). Meg seems like she’s a candidate to settle for.

Monte, California’s current governor is a Republican, not a Democrat.
The current governor is not running again.

The two candidates are a Republican who built a business that everyone seems to like and use and made a billion dollars … and a Democrat with the nickname of “Governor Moonbeam”.

Pick one.

I don’t have to pick one. You may have overlooked my earlier post (post # 11 of this thread) where I stated my intention of voting for the Libertarian candidate.
