Nancy Pelosi’s words “We’ll have to pass the bill to see what’s in it” will haunt her forever.
If only that was the worst of Pelosi’s mistakes…
I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time, And what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition. And Senator - St. Augustine said at three months. We don’t know.
Sigh.

Current polling as Jerry Brown at 49% and Meg Whitman at 44%. Looks to me like Brown’s ahead ;). And yes, a woman who is trying to buy an election and threatening to wipe out people’s pensions (like me!) definitely do think she deserves an “onslaught.” California has a lot of problems and a corporate CEO who looks at nothing but a bottom line, has laid people off plenty of times, who can’t even know if her own help is illegal or not, she has issues. I’m no Brown fan but he’s more logical than Meggy.
This media onslaught against Meg Whitman was predictable. **She’s leading in the race **for governor and the liberal media are very afraid. I wonder if the msm will do a comparable digging into the past of moonbeam? Probably not.

How is she supposed to know if her employee is illegal if she provided a SS card and ID? That’s all you’re legally allowed to ask for. Anything more is profiling.

???

You think your vote can be bought? Well, you can demean your vote all you like, but my vote, my mind, my body - can not ever be bought. How exactly is she buying this election? Because she’s buying her marketing with her own money? Her own, hard earned, saved money?

Would you rather her of spent your money? Tax payers dollars? I have no issue with someone, whos worked all their life, spending their own money…but thats me.

All I have to say is the proof is in the pudding.

Look at Ebay. Look at every other company that Whitman has worked for and turned around.

Now look at Oakland. Chances are that you don’t live there, and wouldn’t dare go there, either. If Oakland is an example of Brown’s ‘experience’ - that’s SCARY. Could you imagine CA being one, big, giant Oakland- NO THANKS.

Browns had his chance, he’s been in office his whole darn lifetime and hasn’t done JACK SQUAT-
.

Actually you can’t even ask for that.

The I9 lists the documents that an applicant “may” provide and the applicant can choose which ones they want to give you. As an employer you can not specifically ask for their SS card - it violates their rights. If they have what appears to be a valid passport they don’t have to provide anything else. No one is required to show a SS card to be hired - however they must provide a SS number.

That’s why I am so apposed to “fine the employer” laws. The state will issue an illegal a DL and they can buy SS cards on the internet but an employer can be fined or jailed for accepting them?

Sorry, I stand corrected.

I know we cannot ask what race a person is until after they are hired. Even then, we have to ask what race they consider themselves. So a dark person with a heavy Spanish accent may tell us his “race” is white (although technically, there is no “white” race).

Yeah I know just like a gun dealer at a gun show sold a firearm to a guy who had a valid DL yet the guy was an illegal alien and come to find out he was buying the gun for another illegal alien and then feds arrest the gun-dealer?

And politicians are scratching their heads wondering why people are looking into the Tea Party?

I don’t care as some posters said why they’re nice people SO WHAT!!! THEY”RE BREAKING OUR LAWS JUST BEING HERE!

I’m on my second marriage and both of my wives were not born in the United States but guess they came here legally! If my wives can do the right thing; these people can do the right thing.

They have that system in place already. Its called E-Verify. The only problem is it does not work. A few years ago a Swift meat packing plants across the country were raided and audited for hiring illegals aliens. Over 600 employees were found to be illegal and ICE made public statements about expected fines and the like. The case very quickly went away when it was revealed that every person ICE found had been passed by the government’s E-Verify system (or Basic Pilot as it was called then). Swift adopted the E-Verify program after it was fined over $200,000 for running extra background checks on people they suspected of being illegal - a violation of their civil rights.

The E-Verify program is wrong about 25% of the time, both with false positives and false negatives.

If the Whitman’s knowingly hired an illegal alien, wouldn’t it have been extremely stupid of them to file all the paperwork for withholding and unemployment too? Even among LEGAL residents its rare that this is done. Zoë Baird showed them how to correctly do it.
All of the above is conveniently ignored by critics. In addition, Whitman’s employee was in fact the employee of a temp agency which bears the responsibility for the background checks, not Whitman. One of the reasons for using the services of a temp agency is to take care of all the legalities and taxes and paperwork, for which you pay the temp agency a fee or percentage above and beyond the hourly rate paid to the employee. The exact percentage depends on what benefits may be included. The agency also has to keep up with all the constant changes in labor laws and tax structures and file whatever paperwork is needed. It saves the person needing the service from having to do all that work. Basically the temp agency functions like the human resources department. And since there are severe penalties for making a mistake, it is just better sometimes to hire an agency to handle all of it.

Personally, I would never take the severe risks in hiring someone because of the horrendous penalties if you make one tiny mistake in the paperwork. Even if I knew the person, I would retain an agency to do all the paperwork and take the burden off me so I could focus on doing my job and providing my service.

If you do it yourself … pay your health care, workers compensation, Federal,State and local taxes, liabiity insurance, legal fees, unemployment taxes, self employment taxes, withholding taxes, phone, travel expenses, car allowance, etc. One of my friends screwed up on some minor tax or other and got a fine of $20000. Twenty thousand. Just about put them out of business. It was a tiny family picture framing business.

No, she was hired through an agency, but she worked for the Whitmans for $23.00/hour!!! They paid her taxes, which is why they got the form from the SSA. We get them all the time because employees put the wrong SS number on their forms, or they’re illegible. They should check their paychecks, but they don’t. I always have to send them a reminder at year-end so that the W-2’s are correct. Even then…

I also had a case where the SS number of an employee had been hijacked. The employee was being told they underreported their income. What a headache trying to get that cleared up. I’m not allowed to talk to SSA on the employee’s behalf, and the poor employee has no idea what’s going on.

Try firing someone for incompetence. We have to have a lawyer on retainer.

Whitman has spent more than $100 million (last I heard it was actually up to $140 million) for advertising and other promotional efforts. You can’t buy a vote, but you sure can increase your visibility and attack your opponent, making it more likely that voters will vote for you (or not vote for your opponent). That’s how votes are bought. Why else do you think candidates and interest groups are so eager to spend money on ads?

The reason the Brown campaign and the press are hammering away at the issue is that Meg Whitman has come out so strongly against illegal immigrants, so this issue makes her appear to be a hypocrite. They are also eager to portray her as a rich person who can afford household help. The attack ads also make a big point of her getting millions of dollars in compensation while shifting jobs out of the U.S. Note that her attack ads against Brown aren’t pretty either. It’s an ugly campaign on both sides.

Holy cow! I forgot all about Moonbeam. 😃

Thanks for jogging the old memory! 👍
