It is reported Melinda Gates claims she is a practicing Catholic and yet look what she is pushing: two issues that are dramatically opposed to Catholic teaching.

“Gates said the funding will go to contraception and sex education; but the money also will indirectly fund abortions, too. The billionaire family already gives money to some of the largest abortion chains in the world, including Planned Parenthood and Marie Stopes International.”

This week The Global Family Planning Summit was held in London.
One focus of this Summit held in London was that of the reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy by Trump that will not subsidize overseas abortion.

So, I guess Melinda Gates feels called to supply the money for the programs mentioned above that otherwise would have come from the U.S.

I find pushing contraception and abortion (she was interviewed on a BBC radio program the other morning, and whether or not it was a deliberate omission or she simply ISN’T actually advocating abortion, I don’t know, she only mentioned ‘population control’, justified in the usual ways)… I find such things naturally abhorrent as both a Catholic and a human being.

However there are practically constant wailings on this forum of the “catastrophe” set to bedevil Europe and potentially North America too, because “we” (for which, one can generally read “white people” ) aren’t having enough babies, and warning of the impending disaster of tens of millions of potential migrants from (eg) the Middle East and Africa moving north, or from South America, again moving north, into Europe and the US/Canada respectively.

Well unless someone tells all the men of Nigeria (etc) to keep it in their pants (and it IS the men who have all the control in that situation), in a more successful way than the Church has previously managed in Europe and N. America, we’re going to face a tremendous population problem when there simply isn’t enough room for everyone to stay put.

So simply decrying Melinda Gates as “evil” because she has a more practical solution to a genuine problem (which will, leaving the horror of abortion aside, also have other benefits, although not ones to outweigh abortion…), than anyone I have read on this site, strikes me as not only incredibly myopic but frankly disgusting. There are some times I am thoroughly ashamed.

No one called Melinda Gates evil.

People have only called Birth Control, Population Control, and Abortion evil.

The problem that most people on here have with Melinda Gates is that she, like Nancy Pelosi, often uses the name “Catholic” when promoting positions that the Church considers heretical and immoral. She also makes statements like “I believe Pope Frances will change the Church’s teaching on contraception” or statements like “Its only a matter of time before the Church gets with the times and allows contraception.”

Contraception is considered a mortal sin and has been for 2000 years.

The Church cannot change that, no matter what people like Melinda Gates and Nancy Pelosi say. No Pope has the authority to change dogma & doctrine.

God Bless

People have called people evil before for the moral positions. If we are talking about Melinda advocating contraception and we call that evil, then technically we just called Melinda evil.

Perhaps more accurately, influenced by evil.

Quit being rigid. Even population control advocates have been invited to the Vatican.

She said her foundation and the church work closely together and she is “optimistic” the Pope will change views on contraception over time.
If her foundation and the Church are already working together, and the pope already did appear to suggest that contraception may be ok in some cases (cnn.com/2016/02/18/health/zika-pope-francis-contraceptives/index.html), then I wouldn’t be surprised if views on contraception are changed eventually.

No.

For example: I consider masturbation an evil/immoral act, even though I suffer from attachment to that sin. When I fall prey to that evil/immoral sin, I do not call myself an evil person. I call myself a sinner.

All sin is evil. But the majority of sinners, heretics & dissents are not evil people (even if they are influenced by and/or support evil/immoral ideas)

But on the other hand, terrorists, kidnappers, men who beat their wives have been called evil.

I get your point, but some acts done by a human are evil, and with that correlation makes that person evil.

Then be prepared to be sorely disappointed when this never happens.

That’s why I said the majority and not all. Yes, there are some evil people. But most people are not evil. They are sinners and wrong, but not evil.

But yes, there are evil people in this world.

I guess she feels she is doing her part to make the world a better place like those who are concerned about climate change.

That’s certainly true (of course), and I also rather dislike people touting themselves as Good Catholics when however true and faithful they may be personally they advocate something else for other people (sort of anti-hypocrisy, if you get my drift). Though the Vatican has been very happy to work with the BMG Foundation (and “agree to disagree” on this area, is my understanding).

The other point I made and which 7 Sorrows also made above - that there is a problem out there and while that doesn’t make her proposed solution any more palatable, it’s much more constructive than the handwringing about abstinence (which has a 100% success rate but which human beings have a darn difficult time using, for a whole host of reasons, not least of which is the lack of female autonomy and education in many societies) that often appears to be the only other proposal - that point still stands, and really was what I meant to be the thrust of my argument before.

I’ll call Melinda Gates evil. Anyone who supports abortion, even in their own heart, is evil. Anyone who pushes “population control” of any type is evil. Anyone who willingly, and without repentance, sins is evil. Most people are evil and are going to hell and any abortion supporter who doesn’t repent before they die will join the crowd.

Personally, I believe this is the case because MOST NGOs (Like Melinda Gates’s foundation) only focus on fixing one part (or a few parts) of the problem.

The Catholic Church however, is different. We run schools, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, providing for the both the physical and spiritual poor.

The Gates Foundation doesn’t people coming in to hear sermons every Sunday. The Gates Foundation doesn’t directly teach children and adults about morality every day. The Gates Foundation doesn’t support people from the day they are conceived until well past their physical death. The Gates Foundation doesn’t try to help both rapist and victim.

The Catholic Church cares for all Souls from the time they are conceived in Mother’s Womb and though their time in Purgatory.

So it’s COMPLETELY different. The Catholic Church IS doing other things to help educate people why Chasity and morality are best way to go. If the Church offered condoms, it would be shooting herself in the foot in regards to all the other efforts of the Church.

Finally, the Gates Foundation is only interested in what happens during our temporal life on earth. The Catholic Church, while she cares about our temporal lives, is MORE interested in our eternal lives.

God Bless

I hope it’s ok for me to promote them here, I am not affiliated with them but when I saw the headline it made me think of Human Life International. I recommend donating to Human Life International: hli.org

You can see what they describe as their ‘mission’ is here: hli.org/about-us/our-mission/

It is the work that an organisation like this does that can help to build and promote the culture of life in the various countries that Human Life International works in and perhaps it is the work that this organisation does that can help to combat against the contraception promotion of an organisation such as the Gates Foundation
