Hello,

I don’t know if I’m in the right forum, but I’m sure it’ll get put in the right spot if it’s not.

Anyway,

I heard a teaser about a book on Ave Maria Radio a couple of days ago called “Memorize the Faith,” by Kevin Vost.

I’m looking for something to help me out and I wondered if anyone out there on the boards has it and how it is.

FYI: Memorization (learning) some stuff takes quite a bit of time with me, for example Catholicism For Dummies was pushing it’s luck with my ability to keep up. I want to learn more about the Bible (as in what’s actually written on the pages). I’ve tried a Daily Bible, I’ve tried one of the Navarre Bibles, I’m hoping this will be easier.

Well, I did order the book yesterday. I should have it Tuesday. So, we’ll see.

Hopefully, this combined with Fr. Corapi’s Catechism CD’s will work wonders (although I beginning to wonder if I should have gone with the DVD’s instead).

Hi Karl,

Did you notice that the author himself (Dr. Vost) just appeared on your thread about his book? I thought that was interesting!

I hope it works out for you, along with Fr. Corapi’s tapes. I thought you might appreciate a suggestion to* to pray* for the ability to remember and comprehend what you study in regard to the faith. The Holy Spirit can help us to learn more than we would otherwise be able to on our power alone.

Here is St. Thomas Aquinas’ *Prayer Before Study:

*O INFINITE Creator, who in the riches of Thy wisdom didst appoint three hierarchies of Angels and didst set them in wondrous order over the highest heavens, and who didst apportion the elements of the world most wisely: do Thou, who art in truth the fountain of light and wisdom, deign to shed upon the darkness of my understanding the rays of Thine infinite brightness, and remove far from me the twofold darkness in which I was born, namely, sin and ignorance. Do Thou, who givest speech to the tongues of little children, instruct my tongue and pour into my lips the grace of Thy benediction. Give me keenness of apprehension, capacity for remembering, method and ease in learning, insight-in interpretation, and copious eloquence in speech. Instruct my beginning, direct my progress, and set Thy seal upon the finished work, Thou, who art true God and true Man, who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

God Bless,

VC

Hi Dr. Kevin Vost I am looking forward to receiving your book. I teach RCIA and thought it would really help.
Thank you in advance…

Hello Forum Members,

Sorry, but I just couldn’t help jumping in on this one. I’ll be happy to converse with anyone with comments or questions on the book or its application to specific materials or with specific groups. I think Fr. Corapi’s presentations on the Catechism are fantastic. I’m also all for the prayer suggestion. St. Thomas’s Prayer Before Study is a beautiful prayer (and the last lines begin the chapter on St. Thomas in Memorize the Faith!).** God bless.

I have read the book and found it to be tremendous! My memory has always been poor and I am always looking for suggestions to improve it. I found it especially difficult to discuss the Faith with others when I couldn’t remember Bible verses, etc… The techniques which Dr. Vost present are amazing. After reading this book, I was able to list (in order) all of the books of the Old and New Testament! That’s an amazing task for someone with a poor memory.

The only thing I haven’t done is periodically review (as Dr Vost suggests) the material in the book. Therefore, I haven’t retained many of the things that were previously memorized. Perhaps I’ll consider this thread a reminder to do so.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to improve their memory. It will certainly have a positive impact on your evangelization efforts.

Dr. Vost - It’s a pleasure to see you on the forum. Thanks for your great book!

God Bless,
Gary

Having both listened to the Catechism series on audio and seen some episodes on TV I don’t really think you’re missing out anything just by having audio - it’s clear enough without needing the visual or anything.

I have the Fr. Corapi DVD also and just recently started watching. I just enjoy seeing him make the presentation.
Thank you Dr. Vost for joining the forum, and I hope you will be around if I have any questions with your book.
God’s Blessings.

Thanks for the kind words on the book, Gary and others. The good Lord willing, I sure plan to be available to field any questions or comments that may come up.

Welcome Dr Vost,
I have not heard of your book:blush: untill now, itsounds great I am going to get it. Thank you for coming on the thread:)

Received the book and so far so good. I think I finally have the ten commandments in my head. Kevin is a good guide and does a good job of helping me visualize. 🙂 Right now, I am just pretty much just reading the book and then plan to go back and really dig in. (Kevin if you see this, I am still trying to figure out the mink with meekness) otherwise I am having fun.
Thanks

Hello Prague,

I’m glad things are going alright with the book. The mink is used to represent meekness merely because the word “mink” sounds like “meek” and is a concrete noun that can be easily visualized and remembered. There is no logical connection between them, and a number of other words could have been used instead. The images can represent the meaning of the word you want to remember or merely sound enough like the word to help you remember it. You could also use the visual image of a person performing a behavior that you would consider a display of meekness, instead of the mink, if that works better for you.

The key is to form a vivid image in the right location and practice so that the particular image chosen will call to mind the abstract concept. St. Thomas called this representing the spiritual through the use of the corporal.

Of course, if you have recalled the beatitude of meekness using the image of the mink, once you go on to reflect on the beatitude itself, the visual image no longer plays a role. It is simply the reminder. Let me know if you have more questions.

Take care.

Hi: Thank you for your reply. I thought I was missing something with the mink, so thank you for the further explanation.
So, I could use “Little Flower” the cute little skunk if it would help me remember! 😛
Plan on telling the RCIA teachers about your book at next meeting.
Glad I heard you speaking about it on Catholic radio.
God’s Blessings

This book is great. It will teach you how to memorize the Ten Commandments, all the books of the Bible, the seven deadly sins, or anything else you want to remember.

I also have a Protestant book on tape that uses a similar system to memorize Scripture passages - that I haven’t mastered yet. But Dr. Vost’s system is great for memorizing lists of information, etc.

The book is great I personally have a poor memory but so far I know the 10 commandments,7 deadly sins,4 cardinal virtues, 3 theological virtues,9 beatitudes,27 books of the new testament,4 marks of the church, 4 last things 5 precepts of the church, 7 sins against the holy spirit, 7 corporal works of mercy, 7 spiritual works of mercy, 7 gifts of the holy spirit,12 apostles, 5 classic arguments for the existence of God.
Kevins book shows you very easy ways to memorise and I have still more to learn, he also shows other memorization methods to remember scripture verses.
A very easy read although I cannot remember the list of chores my wife gave me.😃

That’s great news, Misters Culpa and Hood. It is the darndest thing about the system’s inapplicability to chore lists or “honey-do’s” though.😉

Household and yard chores are actually listed and recommended as good calorie-burning activities in Fit for Eternal Life, but nobody’s better half need know about that. 👍

I have found this so helpful for my RCIA study.
Many Thanks Mr. Vost
