Memory Foam or Latex Foam beds?

Okay, so I had started a thread about air mattresses (such as Select Comfort). Now we are considering (due to cost) the latex foam mattresses. Not Tempur-pedic, that’s memory foam and it’s way too pricey for our budget. Not posture-pedic either since I have heard that they can be really hot since there are not any air chambers in between the memory foam.
Looking at some beds that are other brands. Not really sure if we want latex or memory foam just yet.

So basically I am looking for people that have a memory foam or a latex foam bed. How long have you had it? Would you recommend one? If so, which brand? Also, a strange thing that I heard from someone (who doesn’t even own a memory foam bed) is that over time they can develop a funky smell (start to stink). Has anyone encountered this?

We are totally confused w/ all this mattress shopping, any help is greatly appreciated! 😉
 
Good Question Mama… I have wanted to know this myself. Right now I have a waterbed, but it is too soft for DH. He gets terrible reflux and the waterbed makes it worse. I like the idea of the foam matresses because there is no extra effort that would go into picking it up from a store. They squish so well… and they cost about 1/2 what a regular matress costs.

I will be watching for all your answers too…

Just a note - if you do or ever might co-sleep with a baby, these mattresses are not appropriate for that. Had a thread on the parenting forum where a mom had a scare on this kind of mattress.

hmm, good point duskyjewel. Although my DH won’t allow co-sleeping :rolleyes:

The kind of mattresses I am looking at aren’t exactly like what Blestone is speaking of. So I do apologize for not clarifying a bit more.

If you look at Serta or Sealy’s (and a bunch other mattress companies) websites they now have mattresses that look just like an ordinary spring/coil mattress from the outside (pillowtop and all that jazz) but on the inside it is layers of convulted latex foam, memory foam, and some other types of filling. There are some really expensive ones out there but then there are some that are reasonably priced that we could afford. These aren’t the type that squish down to a small size to take home from the store.
 
We have a traditional coil mattress but with a really nice pillowtop. It’s not like a Tempurpedic, but it does have a nice “sinking in” to it. Very soothing and comfy. We miss our bed when we travel.
 
I like the firmness of the tempur pedic. by that I mean the fact that when we tested them, I did not roll to the middle when DH laid down on it. And you could not even feel it when one of us got up. I like how the foam conforms to your body but then bounces back to shape when you get up off the bed.

So with that being said, I don’t know exactly where to look, all the stores we have been to are trying to sell you the tempur-pedic. I told each salesman at 3 different stores, I can’t afford that price tag and I don’t like the idea of going into debt for a mattress. I don’t know, just wondering if anyone on these forums have the type that isn’t tempur-pedic and looks like a real mattress (not just a piece of foam) but feels like a tempur-pedic.
 
DH and I have a Tempurpedic matress. We bought it a year ago. We LOVE it. Memory foam is awesome, no more back problems for DH and better rest for both of us. I can really tell the difference when I am in hotels-- like now. Ugh!

However, I think people either love it or hate it.

As for the smell-- when we bought our matress they gave us a matress cover that prevents body oils from going into the matress. The cover is washable.

Hi mama! How funny, we too are mattress shopping. What has resolved things temporarily, is we bought two tempurpedic type mattress toppers (memory foam with zipper covers to keep them clean) at Walmart, of all places…Target didn’t sell them. They are made by Spa something…EXCELLENT QUALITY, and they cost $68 per queen. We love them–we get an excellent night’s sleep now, and for a fraction of the price. We basically wanted to test these out before buying the actual mattress, which I agree is pricey–but they come with a 20-year warranty those tempurpedic mattresses. I think if you give the mattress toppers a whirl, you’ll find that they will ‘revive’ your tired old mattress, and buy you some time to save for a better overall mattress. (we don’t see the need right now to go buy a new one, because these two toppers – which total about 4 inches off the mattress–really are soooooooo heavenly…really, it’s hard to believe!) Just my thoughts…happy shopping!🙂

👍 we love memory foam too–can’t believe how great our backs feel–so true, 1ke…And this is just from two memory foam mattress toppers. I can only imagine how the mattress feels.

Mama–you can also get an 8 inch memory foam mattress topper, for any size bed, too–for about $300, which will be probably just as good for maybe 6 months to a year, to again, buy you some time, if you wanted to go for something bigger than a few inches.
 
My wife bought a memory foam topper, I think 4’’. I thought it was an expensive gimmick at first, but after the first couple of nights, well, I sum it all up below:

Mountain bike … $400
Back surgery in 1988 after injury riding mountain bike … $5000
Back brace and cane for “bad” days … $100
Memory foam mattress purchased last year … $400
Sleep uninterrupted by pain … (you got it) … Priceless

We flip and rotate this thing every so often, to maximize life span. I understand Sam’s has them now, and are much less expensive.

When i was pregnant we finally got rid of our uncomfortable spring mattress and went for foam. I really wanted memory foam but we just couldn’t afford it. The link above is the company we bought from just to give you an idea of prices and types. We got the cheapest one (squires) but it has a built in “convoluted” topper (the thing that looks like an egg crate).

Even with the cheapest foam mattress we could find it is still WAY more comfortable than our old mattress, or any other mattress I have ever slept on. And for added comfort we bought a memory foam topper from Costco. It’s great!

No funky smell. No motion transfer when hubby flops around in his sleep. No more sore spots or sciatic pain when I wake…

The only problem comes when you sit in the bed. It sinks too far to be comfortable. I learned that the hard way by trying to sit and nurse DD when she was an infant. So, as long as you’re lying down (or reclining, like to read) you’re good:thumbsup:

edit: forgot to mention that because it’s such a good value/price, we were able to bump up to KING size!!! I will never go back to a queen size again, lol

Malia, we too, are trying to bump up to a king. That’s what started this whole mattress shopping thingee is that we wanted to ‘upsize’ the bed. So, after reading about how coil mattresses are so bad for back pain, etc, etc, I decided ‘huh, wonder if that could be part of the problem w/ the shooting pain going down my leg that happens everynight, it’s the mattress!!’

Anyway, I didn’t know that the memory foam toppers felt so lovely, maybe we will try out a queen one on our current bed til we can decide if we like the foam or not before buying a new, larger bed.

The thing about the bed (memory foam) smelling over time came about when my sis in law told me this weekend that she had heard that from several people. So my question is why would it smell any worse than a regular mattress over time? If they both have mattress pads and sheets over the mattress what’s the difference??
 
according to a relative who owns a large mattress factory outlet, foam mattresses, including space age, memory foam or other fancy products, are for children or very slight people only, and at most will last 5 years of nightly usage, or longer for infrequent use.
 
Our camper came with a VERY firm foam mattress. We added a 2" memory foam topper from Overstock.com (CHEAP!) and it is now more comfortable than our $900 home mattress.

When the home mattress wears out, we will get an inexpensive VERY firm coil spring mattress and a 4" memory foam topper with a good mattress pad to protect it. Memory foam has a smell when NEW, but it goes away fairly quickly. You must use a good pad to protect it from grime (its essentially a big sponge and won’t clean up easily (if at all).
 
I just bought a Spring Air with a nice thick foam pillow top that has the individually wrapped coils like the Simmon’s brand has. Spring Air is available at Rooms to go, and it cost a lot less then Simmon’s or Temperpdic and I think it is just as comfortable. I paid around $500 for a Queen set and it “sinks” very nicely! Temperpedic start at around $1500
 
I agree with getting the 4" memory foam topper. We got one at Sam’s approx 8 mo’s ago for about $150 (Queen size) and it has done well.
 
I doubt that latex is cheaper than memory foam…

We used to have a latex foam mattress, and I loved it. Then we had a regular mattress. Now we have a memory foam but not exactly the Tempurpedic brand. In some cases, I really, really like it, but if you need firmness, it’s not good. As it warms up, it gets softer, so as two people lay there (especially close together) it tends to make a dent in the bed. The latex one never did that, but it was much thinner (about 5" thick and had no pillow top, which our memory foam has.

The site I linked to shows the product warranties… the 6" thick are for kids/very light adults and the 8" is for adults. We have the 8" in the cheapest model and have been sleeping on it nightly (hubby and I for a combined weight of approx 350lbs) and there is no sign of denting or anything. If there is any sigh of wear the company will replace it for free:thumbsup:
