“With Times of London reporter Michael Smith admitting the memos he used in his stories are not originals, but copies he retyped, the controversy seems to be reaching a fever pitch.”

How could a journalist destroy originals that supported his claims? Just lock them up in a safe location and go to jail if need be to protect your sources, right?

Sounds like the reporter is covering his behind. DowningGate is in full swing.

He didn’t. He gave them back to his source.

“Smith told the Associated Press he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.”

Have you heard something different?

It would appear he photocopied the originals, gave them back to the source. Then typed from the photocopies. See:

A good site to sort all this out is here:

"Smith said all originals were destroyed in order to both protect the source and the journalist alike.

“It was these photocopies that I worked on, destroying them shortly before we went to press on Sept 17, 2004,” he added. “Before we destroyed them the legal desk secretary typed the text up on an old fashioned typewriter.” "

This is from your source - The Raw Story link (which BTW I don’t want to visit again!! 😃 Any reference to Ms Feinstein, auugh)
