Yes, that’s right. This morning’s front page story of the Lompoc Record Newspaper(Lompoc,California) had a picture of a woman stuffing money down the bra of a man dressed in drag!! This event was purportedly to raise money for the Chamber of Commerce building fund and a person suffering from cancer and was attended by several of this town’s notables.
Now that’s bad enough, but it was held in the La Purisima Concepcion Church’s parish hall !! Folks, the parish hall was at one time our main church until a new one was built in the 1960’s. It almost made me cry to think that in a place where the sacred mysteries were celebrated, it was now defiled by this profane show of secularism.
I don’t know who authorized this. I have an appt. with our pastor next week. Any suggestions as to what I can/should do?

I really have no idea what to do. But it would seem that you need to talk to whoever is in charge of whoever authorized this and have them fired.

Thread closed. The search function at the Lompoc Record did not return an article on this. PM me with a link to the article and I will consider reopening the thread.

My advice would be to speak with the pastor and then get over it.

What is it that you object to, a few men goofing around to raise money for what seems to be a good cause? I’m tempted to ask what fundraisers you have organized and participated in.

From what you wrote, it was held in the parish hall, not the church or sanctuary.

Personally, it wouldn’t bother me if it was done in fun and had nothing to do with real-life cross-dressers and the like.

Two California Catholic Worker communities are joining various peace groups in sponsoring a March 2 event to mark 25 years of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile ICBM resistance at Vandenberg Air Force Base, near Lompoc.
Looks like Lompoc may join the list of controversial cities.

I would print the article, send it to your Bishops and send it to your Cardinal.

This is not a normal fund raiser event for any Catholic Church to take part in. The church involved was listed on the front page of your local newspaper and that is scandal.

How so?

Anyone who knows me knows I am a Grab-the-ptichforks-and-torches type, but I’m reserving judgment in this case. When the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence did their atrocity in Cali there was no mistake–it was a genuine mockery of the Church and the Sacraments. Without more detail, this current story may just be a case of imprudence and bad taste rather than maliciousness.

On the other hand, I can’t imagine I am the only one who sees an implicit misogyny in the whole drag thing. When men dress in women’s clothing, it’s almost always the most whored-out getup possible. Male sexual deviants have always been kind of a class of men exempted from criticism in the feminist ethos, yet this degraded view of women seems to get a free pass.

This same type of show took place in 2006. And how about the end song, a curtain call to the tune of Abba’s “Dancing Queen.”

They had plenty of time to think about it and I’d make a bet it may have gotten canceled last year in 2007 because of complaints by the regular church goers not just lack of models.

There was recent case where a judge in the Northeast resigned because he dressed up like a women. It wasn’t just about the DUI. Article…

This is scandal. How about the young people who read this article and think the Church condones this.
Methinks there’s a difference between a guy who cross-dresses and a bunch of guys doing it for fun and for a good cause. My guess is that most people would recognize the difference. 🤷

Do you really know guys who get together and dress up as ladies “for fun”? They might have a car show, a fishing derby or do a cookout to raise money.

Sarcasm Alert*

I can hear my son, “Me and my friends are just getting together and dressing up as girls.” Not going to happen nor would I encourage it. I just think this was an advertised public event at a Catholic Church.

Personally, I’ve never dressed up as a girl, but I’ve had a friend or two do so on a rare occasion, for a party…mostly in college. Have you ever gone to a Halloween party where people dress up? I don’t see this as much different.

If they’re doing it regularly, i.e. cross-dressing…I’ll agree with you in that case. But in this case it seems to me to be a bit of harmless fun. I guess we’ll have to disagree on that. 👍

Yup. People go to Halloween Parties dressed as many things. This is a social event where men dressed up in “drag” according to the article.
