I was wondering if those who have gone through menopause could share how old they were at the time…

I’m 43 and starting to wonder when to start wondering. LOL…

Don’t have to share specific age if ya dont want…“Late 40’s”, “mid 50’s” that’s good too.Or PM me, that’s works 🙂

I’m hoping this is a loooooong way off, but I don’t know…I guess I’m hoping that someday I’ll have a chance to bring another life into this world, and it’s hard to think that that might not happen.

I LOVE my kids :)🙂

hi funny, I don’t know if this counts but I have been perimenopausal for a few yrs. starting at 39 ish.

My cycles are irregular, I have insomnia, night sweats out of nowhere that last a night or even a few weeks, I can go from being hot to cold in seconds, etc. Yep, gotta love it. not.

My doctor told me that it’d take about 10 yrs. or so until my hormones shut down and I am completely in menopause.

I wish it would just end as it really aggravates my other illnesses.

grrrrrrr. take one day at a time. that’s what I do. God Bless.

  1. I had a couple instances of missing a month or two, then it was like turning off a faucet. No periods since. My sister had warned there might be unpredictable periods, but there weren’t. I did have some hot flashes AFTER my periods stopped, but nothing extreme. Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night very hot, or would notice during the day that the room felt warmer than normal.
I also experienced some emotional instability. I had some unusually troubling situations come up during my menopausal year, and it’s difficult for me to tell how much the menopause contributed. I DO know that I felt confused, depressed, indecisive and powerless, which is not like me at all. I didn’t realize just how much I had been affected until my mental balance returned; the things that had seemed overwhelming suddenly become easy to resolve. Realizing that menopause was probably at the root of my strange mental state helped me to deal with it, but I was not able to return to my normal happy self until my body adjusted.

I think there are probably as many variations on this theme as there are women!

I’m in my 40s and haven’t hit menopause yet. My mom was in her early 50s when it hit. I sort of wish it would come already.

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of things happening that quickly!

I’m 48. Over the last year or so my periods have gotten shorter and lighter, but just as regular. I am SO ready to be done with them.
I also get hot flashes, for the last couple years or so. I refer to them as “my own personal summer”. I am much more cold tolerant than I used to be. I used to get cold to the bone, now it just feels good.

I will be 55 in April and only recently have begun skipping periods every other month…no other symtoms except forgetfulness. My Gyn says the average woman begins much earlier so I guess I am not average. I wish I would stop already. My mom was 51 and my sister, at 52, hasn’t gone through it either. One thing I did do was loose weight because I hear it is very difficult once you hit menopause and started taking calcium to build up on that.

Started when I was 50. I’m now 55. No period for about 3 years, still having hot flashes but nothing debilitating, just lots of upper body exercise: take off the sweater, put on the sweater, take off the sweater, put on the sweater, take off the sweater – you get the picture.😃

Forgetfulness is the worse symptom. How does it differ from Alzheimer’s? As far as I can tell it’s that you can remember 1. that you forgot & 2. what you forgot. IOW, I’m able to retrace my steps in my mind and find my missing keys, purse, gloves, etc.

I didn’t have menopause but menoSTOP as at 43 years and 4 months was my last period. Nothing leading up to it, it just stopped and never returned. I had night sweats AFTER for about one year and that was it.

Peri-menopause started around age 40.

That’s where the TMI stuff begins…
  • An occasion long cycle here or there then back to normal.
  • General tiredness.
  • Three week cycles with periods lasting a week (which has always been normal for me).
  • Periods so heavy that a jumbo tampon combined with an extra-long pad would get me through no more than two hours.
  • Phases were the spotting goes on and off for what seemed like months at a time.
  • On the other hand there were actually times when I actually had no mucous after my period. When I was younger the fertile mucous often started before or a day or so after my period ended.
  • Around age 49 the hot flashes hit with a vengeance.
I had my last period about a week before my 50th birthday and haven’t had one since. But that was just a little more than six months ago so I don’t know what’s yet to come.

Some people just stop! Most have such mild symptoms that they don’t recognize them.

The one thing I found to be the least mentioned was that our cycles can get shorter! Mine were and have regulated themselves to 26 -33 days now (keep in mind this was from a 36-60 day cycle). I even had one recently during a stressful time a 14 day cycle and it was good stress because my parents were visiting. I will say though that there was a bit of bad stress before they showed up because their van broke down in Colorado and they spent a week there getting it fixed (waiting for a part).

My Gyn told me to ask my mom when she did and that was at 52! My sister apparently has done the same, at 52. Since we all started at about the exact same age (12 1/2) I expect to follow them in when I become menopausal :D. The only symptom my mom had was, her periods stopped, my sister had very heavy flow (depends type, change several times a day flow) and me, well I have the night sweats but during the day I still chill so easy, and I have shorter cycles.

I look forward to this next step in my life as that is all it is, another stage of life :).

Late 50’s in my family. Hoping it comes much sooner for myself. I have Endometriosis, severe month long pain and seemingly permanent infertility because of it. So, it’s not stemming from a desire to prevent children, just severe and painful symptoms. Hysterectomy and menopause are the only “cures” and I don’t want to have a Hysterectomy. I’m hoping to hold out to the end so we can at least remain open to the possibility of a life should God wish to bless us, even if the chances are virtually non existent. 🙂

My mom said she stopped getting her period around 51. Wow… somehow I thought this happens earlier for most women…

Sorry Bama-lol-this here’s a woman thing!😛

Well, my OB/GYN says the average is early 50’s, which really surprises me.I can’t go by family history, my mom had a hysterectomy. So I really don’t know.

Maybe due to improvements in the way women care for themselves over the course of history, we’re staying fertile longer:shrug: I know that for those who have really suffered (missed work, fainted, etc.) reaching the next phase is a relief.

I just wonder, do some women maybe mourn that change just a little? All the women I know seem giddy with joy:D

I hear there are over the counter tests to indicate menopause is nigh, anyone tried one? I wonder how accurate they are.

I haven’t heard of any OTC menopause tests. I’m guess they check fsh level? Anyone know what the test is called?

I was 42, was in perimenopause for about 10 years (found out I was in “Peri” when I had my seventh child, I was 32). I had very light symptoms (such as hot flashes & night sweats), but really yucky periods almost the whole 10 years. I was really glad when it all stopped.

My mom was 41 when hers stopped.

The doctors said we were young for menopause, it usually happens in mid to late 50’s.

Well, last year when I was 52 I had my last period in November. Fast forward to the following June, on my 53rd birthday as a matter of fact:cool: , I had my period for a week which was the normal length of time for me. I had one in July, August & September but not one since then. I was told by my Gynecologist that you are in Menopause when you haven’t had a period for one full year. As far as hot flashes go, I had about three weeks worth last January & they went away. So far that’s my experience, but I have heard some horror stories from other women. I think I am having the same scenario as my Dear Mother, who had it at the same time as me, & her symptoms were mild.

I just turned 44 two weeks ago. I’ve been having night sweats for years, maybe even 10 years. Two days ago I had a drencher like I’ve not had in a long time - it’s so horrible. Then I’m so freezing that I’m shivering like I’m out in the cold in the dead of winter!!

So far cycles are still 28 days like clock work, but the periods are getting shorter, only about 3 full days of normal flow, then spotting for about two. Then one day of NOTHING - then what I call “bonus day” (like on an infomercial “AND THAT’S NOT ALL YOU GET!!!”) one more day of full flow, then it’s done. Drives me crazy.

Otherwise - no day time symptoms…yet. 😉

My mom and both her sisters had hysterectomies before menopause so I have no one to ask about family history (all boys on my dad’s side, and I’m an only child). My maternal grandmother said she never had any symptoms, her periods just stopped one day. My paternal grandmother would never have spoken of such things with me, she is/was very old fashioned.

Anyway - I am not sure how I’ll feel when it finally hits. Being infertile all my life will make it difficult to say good bye to any chance of having a child, even if at this point in my life I’m not sure if I could handle it if I did get pregnant anyway! 🙂

Yes, there will be a certain amount of mourning for me I’m sure.

Maybe TMI but:

I’m 52 and still having regular cycles.
My cycle lengths have shortened slightly to every 25-26 days from every 30-31 in my younger days but I often still have 28-30 days cycles. Up until about a year ago I seemed to be ovulating regularly but now I SEEM to have cycles where my mucus is scanty(I do NFP)
No hot flashes or mood swings yet- but do have some mild forgetfulness it seems to me.
My Mom had a complete hysterectomy so she has no idea when meno hit for her and her mother is deceased(and she never talked about it) and she thinks her sister went through it- early 50’s?

In the last couple of years my average period has been much heavier than before.
I’m in no hurry to go through it- I’m hoping the longer I have periods the more benefits I might get from having the hormones in my system(like bone health?)
