No. It’s a double standard.

Men might be attracted to women in skimpy swimsuits.

Women, while they are certainly attracted to the physical appearance of men, are not nearly as interested in seeing more skin.

I know, it’s cray-cray. As a man, I often look at the guys pointed out by the women in my life and say, “Really? That guy? If he took his shirt off—“
And the response is something like, “I don’t need to see him without his shirt. That’s not the point. And would you please shut up and let me enjoy it?”

But don’t you feel like ‘what makes men/women lust after you’ isn’t a good criteria for modesty? I think it informs part of it, but by itself it can be a mess.

For example I’m nothing to write home about, and I can wear a revealing bikini (idk, because it’s hot) and nobody would be falling into sin. Yet I would still argue that perhaps I should have worn something else instead.

Also, if women are lusting over suits, then shouldn’t men start wearing dull tunics instead 😂
 
Well, I hate to be slightly graphic here, but if I can see the shape of someone’s genitals, I would throw up a little. Male or female. 🙂

This is a little out of point, but it isn’t that confusing. It’s just about consent for them. When someone’s looking at them in their underwear, it’s because they’re peeping/shouldn’t have looked in the first place. While swimming suits are something they intentionally wear so it doesn’t matter if people looked.

Same thing with guys (or at least the ones I know) feeling embarrassed when they are seen with their boxers when someone barges in, even tho they’re okay with less at the pool.
 
Modesty should be based on the logic of ”I want to dress to cover up what is holy and meant for respect because we as human beings are temples of the Holy Spirit” not the logic of ”I don’t want others to lust after me”

Modesty should be out of love for yourself and God, not because others will lust after you. That said, we should help others who may suffer with lust. But if dressing has no inner value in terms of self-worth, you are in for a very bad cycle of how other people think and view us and not how we view ourselves.

We shouldn’t feel guilty we sinned because we have to now face a bad punishment. We should feel sorry we offended God. Same story with modesty, your priorities aren’t right
 
I would tend to look away if a guy was wearing speedos as I agree with what someone earlier said its a bit creepy (unless for races,then I’d still look away,same as for ballet dancers,ice skaters etc)
Not modest in my opinion .
 
When I see a young, ripped-looking guy in Speedos, I assume that
A) he is a competitive swimmer or diver, or
B) he is from some country other than USA (like Brazil or Sweden) where they wear those things, or
C) he is inordinately proud of his body, or
D) he may well be gay.

When I see a guy who is not young or ripped-looking in Speedos, I think he should put on some more appropriate trunks.

As far as turn-ons, I’d rather see the guy in a pair of jeans or camos that aren’t too tight, or in a well-cut expensive power suit.
 
Wow! I didn’t even think this would be considered an issue.

I wear bikinis all the time. I never thought this is an issue of morality at all. My husband loves them, I like them and I can still comfortably play with the kids in them. If someone is lusting after me because of it…well that is on them.

I’m in Australia and it’s pretty common attire around here. Men in speedos not as much.
 
I honestly wish that women had more choices for trunks and rash guards. Our swimsuits look either string-bean or Amish. I normally cover up in a t-shirt due to issues of, um, pectoral enhancement. But something practical would be nice.

It sounds like this thread, however, is more about personal taste than any well-defined sin.

As in, the small amount of women lusting over a weird piece of clothing/lack of clothing is completelyor mostly disregarded but when women’s modesty is concerned, we always remember the small percentage of men that would still lust after them

I. PURIFICATION OF THE HEART

**[2517] The heart is the seat of moral personality: "Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication. . . . "305 The struggle against carnal covetousness entails purifying the heart and practicing temperance:

Remain simple and innocent, and you will be like little children who do not know the evil that destroys man’s life.306

**[2518 The sixth beatitude proclaims, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."307 “Pure in heart” refers to those who have attuned their intellects and wills to the demands of God’s holiness, chiefly in three areas: charity;308 chastity or sexual rectitude;309 love of truth and orthodoxy of faith.310 There is a connection between purity of heart, of body, and of faith:

The faithful must believe the articles of the Creed "so that by believing they may obey God, by obeying may live well, by living well may purify their hearts, and with pure hearts may understand what they believe."311

**[2519] The “pure in heart” are promised that they will see God face to face and be like him.312 Purity of heart is the precondition of the vision of God. Even now it enables us to see according to God, to accept others as “neighbors”; it lets us perceive the human body - ours and our neighbor’s - as a temple of the Holy Spirit, a manifestation of divine beauty.

II. THE BATTLE FOR PURITY

**[2520] Baptism confers on its recipient the grace of purification from all sins. But the baptized must continue to struggle against concupiscence of the flesh and disordered desires. With God’s grace he will prevail
  • by the virtue and gift of chastity , for chastity lets us love with upright and undivided heart;
  • by purity of intention which consists in seeking the true end of man: with simplicity of vision, the baptized person seeks to find and to fulfill God’s will in everything;313
  • by purity of vision , external and internal; by discipline of feelings and imagination; by refusing all complicity in impure thoughts that incline us to turn aside from the path of God’s commandments: “Appearance arouses yearning in fools”;314

2521 Purity requires modesty , an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.

**[2522] Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.

**[2523] There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body. It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things. Modesty inspires a way of life which makes it possible to resist the allurements of fashion and the pressures of prevailing ideologies.

2524 The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening consciousness of being a subject. Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.

**[2525] Christian purity requires a purification of the social climate . It requires of the communications media that their presentations show concern for respect and restraint. Purity of heart brings freedom from widespread eroticism and avoids entertainment inclined to voyeurism and illusion.

**[2526] So called moral permissiveness rests on an erroneous conception of human freedom; the necessary precondition for the development of true freedom is to let oneself be educated in the moral law. Those in charge of education can reasonably be expected to give young people instruction respectful of the truth, the qualities of the heart, and the moral and spiritual dignity of man.

**[2527] "The Good News of Christ continually renews the life and culture of fallen man; it combats and removes the error and evil which flow from the ever-present attraction of sin. It never ceases to purify and elevate the morality of peoples. It takes the spiritual qualities and endowments of every age and nation, and with supernatural riches it causes them to blossom, as it were, from within; it fortifies, completes, and restores them in Christ."316
 
My competitive swim background leads me to find them acceptable. I actually think most women do not find them lust provoking, not more than other swim suits. Abs and shoulders are more what women are drawn to, if anything. Women are less visually tempted as far as sinning goes.

In the 1920’s men wore a one piece tank top and shorts, but the brief swimsuit for men was introduced in the 1930’s. In the 1990s, longer and baggier shorts became popular. I expect that briefs have always been creepy to many since their introduction.
 
I agree and disagree. Swimwear is swimwear, it stays at the beach. You dont go to mass in your swimsuit right? You dont go to work in swimsuit right? But to the beach you do because that’s when you should wear one. When you Leave the beach that’s when you should put pants or shorts on.
