Mental distress and contraception

I’m certainly on board with Church teaching about contraception. But I really don’t agree with the assertion that contraception = wife abuse. Many loving couples have good reason to avoid pregnancy, but still want to have sex for the unitive aspect, out of love for each other, not merely selfish desires. Contraception is the wrong means to acheive this, but equating it to abuse is absurd. It also ignores the reality that wives want to have sex too…it is not simply something that men impose on their poor wives, as though they would only ever have sex to get pregnant.
To make use of the sexual faculty for only the unitive end, while deliberately frustrating the procreative end, is to abuse the sexual faculty, and by logical extension is to abuse one’s spouse. Both men and women are capable of it. Love does not lead the beloved to sin.

I take exception to this statement. My wife and I use contraception, and it is a decision that we made jointly, together. That doesn’t make me an abusive husband.
I can tell you truly mean well and both of you don’t feel in your heart it is an offense to God.

Do you know that you aren’t allow to have the communion?

Sexuality is blessed by God to reproduce and in marriage.

Receiving the communion is so important for a soul after our death, so important.

If you receive communion anyway, Jesus shared with Sister Faustina that he at time will be in a hear like a dark jail and suffer enormously. It is most likely why, it is not allow to receive communion when we aren’t in a state of Grace and is consider a mortal sin. I certainly don’t want to hurt Jesus in this matter.

Anyway, this is your decision as you said, but remember, you are endangering both of your soul by making such a choice.

Wow. That’s quite an attitude. I’m an abusive husband because my wife and I use contraception. Maybe you should just put me in jail!
I have quite the attitude? I used YOUR logic. That’s all. I didn’t say you should be put in jail.

You said because your wife consents it isn’t abuse. YOU said it, not me.

I think I actually agree with what you’re saying, just not the use of the term abuse, because I think you’re equivocating.

On one hand abuse means to misue something. Another definition is that abuse is mistreatment.

Oxford Online Dictionary provides these definitions:

1 use (something) to bad effect or for a bad purpose;
2 treat with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly:
3 speak to (someone) in an insulting and offensive way:

When we say that using contraception is an abuse of the sexual faculty, we mean the first definition. But when you accuse spouses of abuse, you presumably mean the second or third definition, or at least use language that is provocative and implies something much worse than the more neutral first definition.

My wife and i have multiple children(we just had our** last child a couple weeks ago**)and are torn about using contraception. We know it is forbidden and have been true to that to this day. Our problem is now is that my wife realizes she cant mentally handle having another child at least not until our children are a few years older. The stress of raising so many young children(they are all under 3 years old except for one) is just too much for her and she has admitted as much. Does anybody know if this mental anguish would be justification for using contraception or should this be a question i should just be asking our priest?
Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut in advance.
Hello and congratulations on your family and your newest little one. I am the mother of eight and have been in your wife’s situation caring for several young children. Believe me when I say it does not last forever! It only seems like that sometimes when sleep deprivation and the demands of parenting pile up ontop of all the other duties of life. Your newest child is only a few weeks old, so I doubt that your wife is getting much sleep now and her body is still recovering from her last pregnancy.

Mental anguish can be a just cause for using NFP. Consider abstaining for a while and then taking a class together to become familiar with your wife’s fertility cycle. If she’s breast feeding, it can be a bit tricky to figure it out, but it is a Church approved method for postponing pregnancy when one has a just reason for using it. NFP is an alternative to total abstainance, which is another morally appropriate way of avoiding pregnancy.

Be strong!! It may be tough right now, but it will not last forever! Prayers for you and your wife at this special time of your lives. You will look back one day at these times and realize…that you remember very little of the specific details because you were so darn tired. Take pictures if you can. And tell your wife that she looks beautiful-- even if she greets you at the door in her pajamas when you come home from work in the evening to a house that is a mess. What you both are doing in raising several young children is something very beautiful. May God give you courage to continue doing the right thing!

I am deliberately equivocating. When the (something) in definition #1 is a (someone), much less your own spouse, then I believe you are crossing the line into #2. We are talking about a gravely sinful act here.

Contraception - its bad for your health & it also lowers your libido! Could that be why men complain their wives dont want to enough? :o

Thank you all for your responses. I will use the resources suggested in here for nfp since i believe our priest will give the same kind of response that was cumulative here. Thanks again for all your help and prayers. Like the saying goes, with God , all things are possible! Thanks again,
Ron

So true!!! 👍

I remember being in your wife’s shoes…three kids under three, husband recently laid off, constant stress. I was so sleep deprived. I remember seeing my 2-year-old daughter’s doll laying on the floor and going into a complete panic because I thought it was my newborn. Or I’d wake up suddenly and panic because I didn’t know where my baby was (only to see my husband sitting up with her to let me rest). It’s easy to forget how absolutely essential it is to get plenty of rest, and if that isn’t happening, everything seems to fall apart. I hope that your wife is able to get some rest and let go of some of that stress.

You guys are in the hardest part right now. You’re at the point where it is a struggle to get out the door for Mass and everything takes five times longer than you think it will. Potty accidents in the middle of the grocery store, tempter tantrums during the Consecration at Mass…you get all that good stuff. 🙂 I *promise *you that it does get easier as your children grow older. People told me this when I had three children under three. I laughed in their face and then went home and cried because I couldn’t see how it was possible that it would get easier. I promise (again) that it does. I will pray for your perseverance and peace. ❤️

I am a new Catholic and we are pregnant with our first NFP fail baby. We are excited and anticipating the possibility of adding a girl to the three boys and one girl we already have. My husband has gotten an unexpected generous raise in his salary so God is taking care of us. But I spent a week in panic because this will make my fifth child in ten years. I may very well have ten plus more years of fertility. How many children would that mean? So I understand the fear that arises for a woman contemplating the unknown.

But as a Protestant, I have used contraception and with several different methods, there are nasty side effects. And I do see the correlation where contraception has led to our promiscuous culture riddled with divorce and the contemplation of legalizing gay marriage. I. Appreciate the church’s teaching on keeping the bonds of marriage, sex and children sacred. I could have many more children. But I am sure that God will provide financially, physically and emotionally.
Try the Ovacue fertility monitor. It is very accurate for predicting ovulation which is the basis for NFP. It looks for hormones specifically and its it right 99.4% of the time. It is a no brainer really.

Hello Big Ron - I recommend that you see a priest ASAP about the contraception issue.

I am concerned that your wife is mentally stressed and fearful of another pregnancy in the near term. I recommend that you obtain whatever assistance (counseling, help with the children, etc. ) she needs to manage the children until you two sort this out. If you have family nearby I hope they will help out.

Remember Andrea and Rusty Yates. There are lessons learned from that tragedy.

Exactly! Its just silly to say a man is abusing his wife when they use contraception as if women are not interested in sex too! In many marriages the woman is the one with more interest!

Completely irrelevant, as has been covered already in this thread.

shrugs Ok fine but you could have just ignore my post then. Anyway good luck to the OP this will be my last post here.

Actually, it’s completely relevant. If the woman is the one that WANTS the sex (without the risk of pregnancy), you can’t then turn it around and claim that the man is abusing her by giving her what she wants.

Sure you can. Near occasion of sin, not looking out for her soul, not being spiritual head of the household and sacrificing oneself to get his wife to heaven. And then the act itself is
“ab-using” sexuality. It’s not a complete total self- gift. It is withholding. Just becasue someone else wants you to rob a bank for them doesn’t make you not guilty of robbing the bank if you do so.

Considering you’ve gotten pregnant one right after the other, it sounds like you’ve lost confidence in NFP. As challenging as NFP can be post partem, I would say this is serious cause to practice NFP strictly. I think a big error we make is that we teach women to understand their cycles only just before they get married. They often see little reason to avoid or have little reason to avoid, and suddenly when they finally have a need for NFP, its like they’ve jumped into advanced NFP before they really mastered the basics or found the method that suits them the best.

In much of Catholic culture “women don’t like sex, are angelic, always the pure ones, and always woefully abused by the all powerful but evil male.” Woe unto woman!

The male of coarse is never the abused but always the abuser. You know it doesn’t matter when dear wife pops her pills even against hubby’s will, throws on her sexiest lingerie, and makes provocative overtures to the husband b/c somehow its still his fault.

When you read Humanae Vitae it clearly states that BC results in man’s degrading of woman. Why doesn’t wearing a condom degrade man? It is our seed that gets spilled in vain. We are the ones cut off from woman that supposedly we need so badly. If a male pill comes out is the guy still degrading the woman? Women seem quite happy using guys for sex these days too but heaven forbid we talk about that and give some criticism where it is due.

Yet despite all that women will remain angelic and men demonic…maybe one day we will wake up and see there are 2 demons here. I doubt it…

There need not be any demons if the Church’s moral teaching is followed. Whichever spouse actively contracepts commits evil, whether it be the man denying his seed to his wife, or the woman denying her egg to her husband.
