Marriage is the imago dei.

Artificial birth control does violence to the imago dei.

Thus, a condom degrades the dignity of man and woman, designed to reflect the imago dei in their marital embrace.

You’re a good man to be on here looking for a way to help your wife. I’m a nurse and it’s very important that you recognized your wife’s desperation. Everyone’s different and while one woman may be able to handle many young children at once, not all can.

Definitely talk to your priest, besides spiritual advise, hopefully he can put you in contact with a family that has experience dealing with this. Like a mentor. Also talk to her OB. He/she has seen all this before and can help you through this period, from nutrition to counseling and support groups. This is serious and do not allow any one to tell you “this too shall pass.”

Some women have a much harder time with postpartum depression. I’ve seen far too many women get very bad advise about this and the family as a whole, the children especially, suffer.

Get your wife through this difficult period of the first few months. Once things begin to smooth out you can discuss family planning. Right now she’s exhausted, stressed, and fearful of another baby too soon. Most likely sex will not be the thing she’s going to be looking for when she finally falls into bed at night.

Good luck, I’ll keep you in my prayers.
