I just wanted to say thank you all so much for giving me some advice and feedback!

Your words mean more to me then you will ever know!

Thanks!

Can someone help me to link mental illness with redemptive suffering? I’m just looking for a little more insight. Quotes from the CCC, armchair apologists, Catholic therapists, and personal experiences are most welcome.
i believe everyone has a “mental illness” because everyone is a sinner… But some of us suffer more “that way” because of what we ahve been through (abusive parents… etc…).

God uses ALL suffering… if we offer it to Him… and probably even if we don’t… In fact, i know that he uses it even when we don’t… He uses everythihg… to get us to Heaven…

I offer up the “smallest” sufferings for conversions of sinners… I hate flies and when one gets inside… It is seemingly a small cross but to me… Hmmmm… doesn’t seem like it… I offer all kinds of things up… does me a lot of good and hopefully others. .

Are you asking because you have some kind of (diagnosed) mental illness or you know someone or both…?

But like i said… everyone has a mental illness… because no one has a perfect life…

I’m not brave enough to discuss details in an open forum. I realize that I’ve dropped hints and made allusions. I am reticent because someone will know who I am, but even in the anonymity of an open forum, I could hear less than encouraging things.

It’s that, well, I revealed my issue to two people. The first lady I knew in real life told me how she felt the need to distance herself from another friend with the same issues, because she a) didn’t want to be associated with “it” and b) she felt the need to be a “better person” to make up for her friend’s “deficiencies” (her word.) So I just blocked her from my ISP buddy list and moved on.

The second person, here on CAF whom I met through the another thread, tried the classic invalidating phrases:

It’s all in your mind
As you get stronger, it won’t bother you as much or
Perhaps it’s a demon, or temptation
If you expose yourself to the sacraments, you won’t feel so inclined or tempted to feel this way
Pity can lead to despair and despair is a sin
You have so many things to be thankful for / other people have it worse off than you do

And finally, those who ignore you all together when they hear “metal illness.”

Perhaps I am denying my suffering in Christ if I don’t answer your question, distracted. Okay, I will take a chance and tell you here: I have PTSD from both childhood and my miltary experience. I also have Rapid Cycling Bi-Polar. But if anyone wants more background, please PM me. I’m VERY glad to share my story off forum.

Incidentally, I went to Adoration last night. I prayed for CAF posters, and especially for all participants and lurkers in the Mental Health Threads (as well as the Prayer Intentions Forum). Know that my prayers are with everyone, ok? And I hope someone remembers me, as well. Especially those here.

XOXO

i don’t like to say that i have a “mental illness” either, but some peple would put that label on it… I hate that term because it conjures up images of… well, you know… crazy people doing crazy, dangerous, irrational things…I have PTSD myself… and it also began in childhood, although i didn’t suffer from the kinds of blatant abuses others did… Mine was a more “subtle”, seemingly un-detectable kind of abuse… which is, in many ways, worse than the outrageous stuff… at least you can SEE that…

Anyway, i empathize with you… will keep you in my prayers…

as stated in another post, i believe everyone has a mental illness. Those who say they don’t are probably the worst ones because of their denial… blindness… Again, i don’t like that term… I would rather call it something like… hmm… I’m thinking… I will get back to you… I really don’t like labels… In fact i hate them…

There was a thread lately about “acceptable prejudice”. What do you all think of how you are treated by others once they found out about your mental illness? How about by the Church? Tim

people in the Church… are still people. I dont’ tell anyone i have … well… i don’t even use the term mental illness… I don’t believe anyone should… because of the negative, scary connotation… I just tell people i have been through “weird” stuff… ad that kind thing… I have had awful experiences with people in the Church treating me (and others) in a very un-Christian way…(though not for “mental Illness”)_ I gues that’s probably mostly due to the fact that satan attacks Catholics more than others… and in mostly non-Catholic areas… Catholics are under a lot of “pressure”… Still.,. it seems so strange to me that charity is sometimes SO lacking in Catholics…

I’m in a really small parish and it seems like I get the inquisition after mass…where do you live, work, what do you do for fun…people digging. You must know what that is like having PTSD like I do. You want to be charitible, but part of you wants to tell them to get out of your face from the stress and they can sense something is off. I had a guy give me a hard time for not bringing my kids to bowling night in the parking lot of the church once and I turned on him. He didn’t know I was going through a med change that week. My priest knows, but because of that, has refused my offers to help out saying “you have enough on your plate”. I’m turned off on the whole deal now and don’t know if I’ll ever go back to church. I still believe, but I can’t bring myself to go to mass and when I decide to, I have been up all night making driving impossible in the morning. Problems “normal” folks don’t understand. Tim

I didn’t know this until a few years ago, but it is a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sunday… so i am concerned…

I know what (some of what) you are going through because i have thought of missing Mass myself because of people… I just go to a different Church… i may have to go out of my way and all that, but it is sometimes necessary. Also, i noticed that i was making people’s opinions too important to me… and that Jesus was getting crowded out of my mind… and i didn’t even realize this fully until… well, it is kind of a long story… all the details… but Jesus revealed some VERY interesting things about what was going on in my heart and soul… the very depths thereof… things i didn’t consciously have much of a clue about…

I have found what helps the very most is spending time with Jesus at the Blessed Sacrament… as long as possible… preferably ALONE with him, so as to have no distractions… but being there with strnagers is good too… I like going ot a Church or chapel where no one knows me… Jesus shows me amazing things about myself and my life that i did not know before… or fully realize or whatever… He sees us totally differently than peple do… They don’t even know us… Our most intimate human frined/companion/family member does not know the real person we are … They think they do… but they only know the tip of the ice-berg… compared to Jesus…

God bless… 🙂

I live in the panhandle of WV on the edge of my home parish. There is 3 churches 30 miles in every direction and I have gone to the bigger one in Northern Va. It was huge, way bigger then my own parish. It was really uncomfortable there. I like my priest and parishioners in my home parish, but we are a one of 2 or 3 young large families there and get more attention then I care for. If I were to go back, it would be there.
I just can’t shake this misdirected resentment for the reason’s for my PTSD. Every one of them had a spiritual root, be it intervention or attack. I’ve found after 3 years that I’m on my own to discern the difference. No priest, Dr. or loved one will ever understand and as you have pointed out, it’s just the Lord and I. So who do I shake my fist at when it is just me and Him? Get what in saying? If I get mad at myself, self destruction. If I’m mad at Him, self destruction. The last time I stopped in at chapel, I felt as though I didn’t belong. Tim

In the above thread, Michelle Arnold offers a quote from St. Francis de Sales that deserves to be framed in gold:
The everlasting God has in his wisdom foreseen from eternity the cross that he now presents to you as a gift from his inmost heart. This cross he now sends you he has considered with his all-knowing eyes, understood with his divine mind, tested with his wise justice, warmed with loving arms, and weighed with his own hands to see that it be not one inch too large and not one ounce too heavy for you. He has blessed it with his holy name, anointed it with his consolation, taken one last glance at you and your courage, and then sent it to you from heaven, a special greeting from God to you, an alms of the all-merciful love of God.
Scott, Nathan and other fellow-sufferers, look on the bright side: Being excluded and rejected is hard. Being included can be harder: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=254174 At the very least, it might call for social skills you (and I – I have an autistic spectrum disorder) don‘t have. Being the only one not invited when the whole department goes out every week may be humiliating, but it beats having to deal with the situation described in this thread.

I’m bipolar with a more serious depression problem than manic. The first and most serious episode of severe depression when I was suicidal led to my checking myself into the psyche ward for two weeks – it’s the only thing that saved me. Up until I was literally blindsided by this crash I had what I felt was a very close relationship with God. I felt God’s presence constantly. During the depression, however, there was nothing but blackness. To keep a long story relatively short, the absence lasted a long time and I left the church and God, too. Over a decade later I returned. Unfortunately, the same thing happened though this time I wasn’t as suicidal and was able to avoid the hospital stay. I should also mention that prior to these two severe episodes I was doing what I discerned to be God’s will for me. Things not working out as planned is one thing, to not have any consolation from God, to not even feel God’s presence in the darkest periods of my life is another. The result is that I am completely reevaluating my belief system, including the very nature of God. I still consider myself to be a spiritual person, but my scope has broadened a great deal, which may be a good thing. I can also understand others better – their inability to be other than what they are. I empathize more, I am more accepting. Even I have to admit those are positives. But I do wonder that suffering is a prerequisite for learning/spiritual advancement; I certainly don’t see any redemptive value in it. Most folks on this forum would disagree strongly with my new direction as it involves a different understanding of God and Jesus than is generally accepted in mainstream religion, but it is what I am left with. I don’t know where this phrase originated but I’ve heard it’s used by AA and other addiction groups. It certainly resonates with me:

Religion is for people who are afraid of hell, spirituality is for people who’ve been there.

you are right… no one will ever understand you perfectly except God… (reminds me of that spriitual song Lonesome Valley… Jesus walked this lonesome valley. He had to walk it by himself… oh, nobody else could walk it for him, he had to walk it by himself… And then it says, instead of Jesus, WE… have to walk that lonesome valley…)… though, of course, with Jesus, we are never alone.

I understand being angry with God… I still get angry, even downright hateful toward him… but then, most of the time (not all the time  😦 ) i calm down and realize that it isn’t God i should be angry at… except that he DOEs test us in some “weird” ways… When i go out into a place where it is just me and nature and God… I “interestingly” never get angry at Him there… so i believe it is really the “human realm” that causes us to feel anger/hate toward God… As you know, the devil uses humans to do his work… sometimes the humans don’t realize they are being used as a pawn… Sometimes they know but don’t care… AnywAy… The Bible says Be angry but sin not… As long as your anger doesn’t lead you into sin, there is nothing wrong with it… God understands and is big enoug to handle it… (as you know in your head… but possibly not in your heart??)…

They say the longest journey you will ever take is the one between your head and your heart… :hmmm:

God bless…

Religion is for people who are afraid of hell, spirituality is for people who’ve been there.
No one has ever walked in your shoes before and no one else ever will… (exactly)… so i wouldn’t say you are on any “wrong” path… Only God knows what path you are on…

All i know is that Jesus said he is the “way, the truth and the life.”. and that no one comes to the father except through him… And Jesus was either God or he wasn’t…

anywya, to an extent, i understand that AA thing… but i think it would be more accurate to say that religion WRongly APPLIED is for people who afraid of Hell… I mean if the only reasons someone goes to Church is to avoid Hell and they dont’ DO all that Jesus asks/requires… well, then i can understand where religion is not going to help…

And another thing that i feel is wrong with that saying is that EVERYONE goes through Hell… at some point or other in his or her life… Yes, some people have had more hell t han others… more poverty, more rejection, more loneliness… etc… but there is NO one who escapes crosses in this life… If nothing else, one has the cross of such things as toothaches, headaches… and that great universal, inevitable cross none of us can avoid: Death…

So… anyway… simple axioms do not usually tell much of the whole story…

Also, i have to say this: That i may have ended up where you are at (have been there, more or less anyway) if it hadn’t been for a preist telling about the Real Presence years ago. When i began spending time with Jesus there… things changed for me, spriitually, and in other ways… I won’t begin to attempt to put it all into words… too mysterious, too wonderful… for mere words…

Have you ever done that?? (you have to be there more than an hour because… well, its a long story why i say that… but Jesus said to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane something that i feel he is asking us today… “Could you not wtch wtih me one hour?”

the simple answer as to why we should be there at least an hour is We are human… we are weak… harassed by Satan at every turn… bombarded with images of sex and violence… and other evils around the clock… We have to be there for some timeto gett all this rubbish cleansed off our minds/hearts/souls…

God bless…

I guess the really upsetting thing during all of this is that all my friends turned against me and they abandoned me.
been there… and Jesus was there also… He suffered worse than we do… (hard as that is to believe:hypno: :hmmm: 😦 ) Do you ever offer up your sufferings in union with those of Christ, for the conversion of sinners?? I love that aspect of the Catholic faith… how we can get something meaningful out of our sufferings. We can also use them to expiate for past sins… the stains of which still may cling to our fallen souls… It took me a long time to get to this place of not caring about losing “loved ones” For one thing, they weren’t all that “lovign”… so why did i feel it was such a loss?? I am human… that’s why… But anyway… blessings come from curses (and vice versa)… I love being alone with God… who loves me unconditionally. People don’t…
very shy and I am afraid of social situations. I keep to myself most of the time.
me too…
I try to pray but I don’t get anything out of it. Don’t know why. However, maybe I’m closer to God than I think I am. I just hate all this rejection and all this suffering.
hate to sound like a broken record (I’ve said this on other threads many times but): have you ever spent much time in the Real Presence of Christ in the Church?? I began to see things There that i didn’t see before… (very long story…)… I am so thankful i found out about it… I don;t take meds for my PTSD because i believe it is a cross i must caryy… That*** isn’t*** to say i think you should do the same… NOt at all… I dont’ know much about your condition… That is just something that i FEEL (could be wrong) Jesus wants from me… (it doesn’t help that with my PTSD… i don’t trust anyone including doctors… ).
What can I do to get closer to God? Offer up my suffering? Pray the rosary(even if i dont feel like it)?
Yes… and go spend time with Jesus… I learned recently that the souls in Purgatory are there, with Jesus, at the Blessed Sacrament… Maybe that is why sometimes i… well, go through some uncomfortable stuff there (??)… who knows… There is a lot of mystery There…

God bless… thanks for sharing your cross…

Hello there,

I’ll try to answer your questions as best as I can. Well, I do my best to offer up my cross in union with Jesus’ suffering for the conversion of sinners, but to be honest with you I forget to do this most of the time. You see, I am in therapy right now and my therapist and I both agree that i might have a “dependent” personality. That is to say that I depend on material things or people for all sorts of things. For example, I depend on my computer and video games for relief of my physical suffering. When I’m playing Halo or another game I forget about my suffering. Another example is that I depend on music or my guitar to “help” me get through my problems and it also helps me to deal with my suffering.

The ironic thing about all this, is that I don’t depend on the one Person I should: Jesus. Honestly, I forget about Him ALOT. A few weeks might go by, then out of the blue I’ll remember Him and I’ll talk to Him for a few minutes. You see, I am extreme. Let me explain…When it comes to God, I am either one extreme or the other. One day I’ll be praying all day and I’ll include God in everything, then the next day I won’t acknowledge Him at ALL! Weird huh? I have never been able to find something in between.

When I was in one of my extreme modes(Back in Fall '05; right after my breakdown). I would spend every night in front of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. While I was there I would talk to Him, ask Him for strength and I would pray the Rosary. I did that from September 2005 until late December 2005. Guess what happened? I got my Disability on the FIRST try. 95% of people who apply for SSD get denied 2-4 times; it’s standard protocol. However, because I was in constant prayer I got my disability on the very first try.

For that, I am very grateful. I just wish something would reignite spiritual fire for Jesus. I guess time will tell…

thanks for all your replies!

Nathan

Oregon… !! that explains a few things…

:o
Yes, I am a native of MIchigan, but have lived in Oregon since 2003. It is one of the most liberal states in the Nation. It is a wonder I have not swung to fundamentalism. Only reason is, I know too much to do that!

😛

so how long has it been since you spent time There with Jesus? When i leave the Tabernacle… i start getting caught up in “un-Jesus” kinds of things immediately and a lot of what i gained by being with him is “lost” … therefore, i feel we should go there often… The world and the flesh and the devil are more powerful than we are by ourselves… and there isn’t much “spirit of Jesus” out there in the world… People say God is everywhere… Well, that’s a big Yes and No thing… the POWER of God is with Christ… The bible says that the “will of God will be accomplished thorugh HIM” - Isaiah [empahsis added] -* only* through Him…

(His mother helps 🙂

Thank you for your response. The thing I find most troubling about mental illness (as opposed to physical illness) is that it directly affects our thinking and perception. Things get distorted when I’m depressed and even though on some level I realize that (sometimes) that intellectual knowledge doesn’t override the emotional rollercoaster caused by the hodgepodge of brain chemicals.

When I got out of the hospital that time, I cannot even tell you how dark things were. Until my crash I’d felt God always - then, poof - nothing. I felt I had to try, though. So I kept going to Mass and I did spend time with the Blessed Sacrament. I prayed. I did all I could think of but my mental pain was so great that I actually hurt physically. I truly hope no one else has to go through this type of experiece as it really is hellish.

When this happens to me I tend to be tempted to give up totally. To loose all hope - that way I won’t be disappointed. I don’t really see this happening but I can understand how some folks might. And I can see positives, believe it or not. I am much more able to empathize with the suffering of others and also with their limitations. I’m more accepting of others. My husband really wishes I could be someone else when it comes to this illness. But, of course, I can’t. These are my limitations and no matter how hard I try I can’t become someone else. My dad has this problem as well (he committed suicide). For most of my life I couldn’t imagine why he just didn’t change and become the dad I needed. It seemed so simply, to me anyway. Now I know better. We can make a lot of spiritual progress through adversity, no doubt about it. Maybe I’ll be able to make a difference to someone else who is struggling, or to their family - most of whom have no idea how to deal with a depressed loved on. So, see, I do still have hope. And that may well be a miracle. :o
