Are you asking because you have some kind of (diagnosed) mental illness or you know someone or both…?
But like i said… everyone has a mental illness… because no one has a perfect life…
I’m not brave enough to discuss details in an open forum. I realize that I’ve dropped hints and made allusions. I am reticent because someone will know who I am, but even in the anonymity of an open forum, I could hear less than encouraging things.
It’s that, well, I revealed my issue to two people. The first lady I knew in real life told me how she felt the need to distance herself from another friend with the same issues, because she a) didn’t want to be associated with “it” and b) she felt the need to be a “better person” to make up for her friend’s “deficiencies” (her word.) So I just blocked her from my ISP buddy list and moved on.
The second person, here on CAF whom I met through the another thread, tried the classic invalidating phrases:
It’s all in your mind
As you get stronger, it won’t bother you as much or
Perhaps it’s a demon, or temptation
If you expose yourself to the sacraments, you won’t feel so inclined or tempted to feel this way
Pity can lead to despair and despair is a sin
You have so many things to be thankful for / other people have it worse off than you do
And finally, those who ignore you all together when they hear “metal illness.”
Perhaps I am denying my suffering in Christ if I don’t answer your question, distracted. Okay, I will take a chance and tell you here: I have PTSD from both childhood and my miltary experience. I also have Rapid Cycling Bi-Polar. But if anyone wants more background, please PM me. I’m VERY glad to share my story off forum.
Incidentally, I went to Adoration last night. I prayed for CAF posters, and especially for all participants and lurkers in the Mental Health Threads (as well as the Prayer Intentions Forum). Know that my prayers are with everyone, ok? And I hope someone remembers me, as well. Especially those here.
XOXO
