Oh? My memory tells me there was a photo I was looking at. Man, must drink more milk
No need to apologize, I was just curious. I read a bit more into it than I needed tooAbsence of yeast in the Byzantine rite would not invalidate it, it would only make it illicit.
Sorry I wasnāt clear.
I stand corrected and amazed. You are better baker than I am Gunga Din.As ConstantineTG said, Iāve made loaves for my parish that were nothing but water and flour, flat, about an inch thick. Not hard as rock by any means but perhaps more crumbly that one would like. It was chewy, with the nutty sweet flavour that whole wheat flour imparts.
Whole wheat flour has NEVER been allowed by the church for communion bread. Even in the ancient church it was mandatory that wheat flour was sifted to make white flour as white flour has always been seen as the BEST, and we only offer our best to God. We talk about yeast alot, most people dont realize that it was only since World War I that āyeastā has been available as something on its own. Before then all bread was raised with a natural starter such as sourdough. As ConstantineTG said, Iāve made loaves for my parish that were nothing but water and flour, flat, about an inch thick. BALONEY! The church demands wheat and the most natural, unprocessed flour available commercially is stone-ground whole wheat.

Funny thing is how we now consider whole wheat āBESTā since itās healthier, less processed, does not require the added vitamins to bring it back to nutritious standards. Have you seen white flour that isnāt āenrichedā? Many parishes today regularly use whole wheat hosts.

2 Our Fathers and 2 Hail Marys for me!
Donāt virtually all wines contain sulphites these days?Actually he couldā¦any unadulterated wine can be usedā¦that means nothing added to the grapes when making the wine. And the bread has been discussed, the Eucharist would be valid but NOT licit, to use the Western terms.
Itās true that most wines contain added sulfites, but not all. Sulfites, however, also occur naturally (fmi.org/media/bg/?fuseaction=sulfites). In a way, itās similar to yeast which, while it can be added, also occurs naturally (hence the ā18-minuteā rule for baking matzoh).Donāt virtually all wines contain sulphites these days?
Is Church wine made especially without sulphites, or is that a valid additive?
