Instructor of Catholicism at UI claims loss of job violates academic freedom
URBANA – An adjunct professor who taught courses on Catholicism at the University of Illinois has lost his teaching job there, and he claims it is a violation of his academic freedom.

Kenneth Howell was told after the spring semester ended that he would no longer be teaching in the UI’s Department of Religion. The decision came after a student complained about a discussion of homosexuality in the class in which Howell taught that the Catholic Church believes homosexual acts are morally wrong.
…]
The student complaint came in a May 13 e-mail to Robert McKim, head of the religion department.

The author of the e-mail said he was writing on behalf of a friend – a student in Howell’s class, who wanted to remain anonymous. The e-mail complained about Howell’s statements about homosexuality, which the student called “hate speech.”

“Teaching a student about the tenets of a religion is one thing,” the student wrote in the e-mail. “Declaring that homosexual acts violate the natural laws of man is another. The courses at this institution should be geared to contribute to the public discourse and promote independent thought; not limit one’s worldview and ostracize people of a certain sexual orientation.”

Howell said he was presenting the idea that the Catholic moral teachings are based on natural moral law, and the Catholic understanding of what that means.

“My responsibility on teaching a class on Catholicism is to teach what the Catholic Church teaches,” Howell said. “I have always made it very, very clear to my students they are never required to believe what I’m teaching and they’ll never be judged on that.”

“Natural laws” aren’t “laws of man” but the law according to the nature of the thing. Homosexual acts are contrary to the natural law.

Dr. Howell is an orthodox Catholic. He was hired to teach Catholicism and apparently unjustly fired for doing so.

I’m not in the least surprised. This culture is becoming more and more anti-Catholic by the minute. It’s 1932 all over again, except this time, it’s not the Jews who will end up in the ovens of concentration camps. It’s Catholics. And it’s not Nazi’s who will be doing the killing, it’s Marxist liberals who now control our government and our media, brainwashing the kids into what and how to think.

I look forward to being a martyr for the faith! 🙂

Oh, puhleeease.

There is a facebook group “Save Dr. Ken” which gives up-to-date info on the story as it unfolds. Join today! 🙂

Dr. Howell has appeared on EWTN several times. He is a great man.

Is this a violation of academic freedom? Yes. Is it a violation of academic freedom when someone gets fired from a Catholic university for something along the same line? Yes.

I’m not sure the term “academic freedom” means much…it is not like free speech, which only pervents the goverment from restricting what we can say…

It’s a tough situation…

Howell said he’s often had students who disagree with him, but "that’s always been done with courtesy and respect on both our parts. This semester the students were the most negative and vociferous and critical that I’ve ever seen."
Scary!

Adjunct professors do not have tenure and may be terminated at will. He knows the system and his “rights” were not violated by his severance from the University. Being deprived of freedom to teach what he was hired for is another matter, but not one that would prevent him from being terminated. Universities which make a big thing of academic freedom are today in practice very restrictive tol the point of being hypocritical.

Is the diocese / Bishop supporting him? I sure hope so. What a perfect time to take a public stand for our faith, especially with such a high profile university.

"They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do what Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did.” (JN 8:39-40)

**We all must follow the example of the Apostles, no matter what the cost!

**“Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.” (ACTS 5:41)

It is not “hate speech” to say homosexual acts are a sin. Nobody hates gay people. Most of us have at least a handful of gay friends, especially in my state. It just means we do not agree with what they are doing.

It seems really stupid to hire someone to teach what Catholics believe and then to fire said person for teaching what Catholics believe. Especially if he told them they do not have to believe what the Church teaches.

Did you know that publishing the health risks of homosexual acts is also considered “hate speech”? Homosexual males are 44 times more likely to have HIV/AIDS than heterosexual males. The average life expectancy of a homosexual person is 20 years shorter than the average. To put this into perspective, smoking “only” takes 10 years off the average life expectancy.

Do we hate smokers? Of course not. Smoking is a serious health risk and although I don’t agree with smoking, I don’t hate people just for being smokers. I realize that smoking is a very bad habit and is very hard to break once a person becomes addicted. For some people, it just takes one cigarette and they’re hooked.

According to their logic, I guess the anti-smoking/anti-drug campaigns can also be considered “hate speech.” Anything that tells people they shouldn’t do something they may want to do is now called “hate speech.”

It is not a choice to have the homosexual urges, but it is a choice to act on them or not. Just because you want to do something doesn’t mean it’s “natural” or what you should do. We are above animals and can choose to not act on our urges.

I believe people need to learn to control themselves or else we are going down a slippery slope and anything will go. Just because you feel the urge to do something doesn’t mean you should do it.

University of Illinois Instructor Fired Over Catholic Beliefs

He said he and McKim disagree on religious views and believes he lost his job over “just a very, very deep disagreement about the nature of what should be taught and what should not be taught.”

After he lost his teaching job, Howell also was fired as director of the St. John’s Catholic Newman Center’s Institute of Catholic Thought. The on-campus center directed questions to the Diocese of Peoria, which had paid for his position.

Patricia Gibson, an attorney and chancellor of the diocese, said Howell was let go because he could no longer teach at the university. “We are very concerned and very distressed by what we understand is the situation from Dr. Howell,” she said. The diocese hopes to discuss the situation with someone at the university, she said.

What should not be taught in a class on Catholicism is actual Catholicism.

For what it’s worth, one thing I gleened from the article was the title of the course -
“Introduction to Catholicism and ***Modern ***Catholic Thought”. :ehh: I guess it wasn’t modern enough for them…

This is a completely ridiculous situation. The inmates are running the asylum.

Sounds like what they really wanted was somebody to teach “Charles Curran catholicism” instead of the real thing.

Must be an interesting place to have a job interview. “Oh, and by the way, just because we hire you to teach a particular subject, doesn’t mean you’ll be allowed to teach that subject.”😦

So they hired him to teach a course on Catholicism. He taught them what the Church teaches (very thoroughly too apparently. I never got study notes emailed to me in university). And then they fired him because a homosexual student was offended? It’s not a big secet that the Catholic Church doesn’t approve of homosexual behaviour. What were these people expecting?
Soon the United States will be just like Canada, where you can actually go to jail for criticizing homosexuality. Criticizing homosexuality is a crime here, and you can actually go to jail, thanks to several wonderful “Catholic” Prime Ministers.

Actually i dont think he was criticizing homosexuals, he was just speaking the Truth. he told them what the CC teaches and explained that this is a sin.

the only part i dont like is the part that he said that they dont have to belive him. what kind of thing is this? how can someone being speaking the Truth yet he tells them they dont have to believe it?

can you imagine St Paul and the Apostles and Jesus telling people, yes, what i am telling you is the Truth but you dont really have to believe it.

that is the part he has failed. maybe he was afraid. i dont know.

Can any faithful Catholic on this board say they are suprised, at all?

The pressure will slowly tighten, and tighten and tighten and tighten until the faith is pushed underground again.

yes. we are no longer allowed to speak about sins. if we do, it is classified as hate speech or discrimination. blame on the social justice and the so called freedom advocates. now everyone have rights without limits. the only One without rights is God in our world.

Not quite. We cannot deny God His rights. Oh, we can ‘push Him aside’ here on earth and pretend that He does not exist, or that His word isn’t real.

But God will not be mocked and He will not be denied.

We are building a hideous future for ourselves.

One day soon we will be facing catastrophe, and then we will be crying to God, “Save us, save us!” and He will be silent because we had already turned Him away. . .

And in turning Him away, we will have in His place erected a ‘false’ god as so many have today. THAT is the god we will call upon to ‘save’ us. . .and since he is a false god he will not be able to do so, while the True God whom we have rejected would have come to our aid. But though we have ears we will refuse to hear the True God, and though we have eyes we will not be able to see the True God. . .not because HE denies us but because WE have denied Him.

This will not be a punishment but simply a ‘result’ of our own freely chosen decision to reject the True God. . .
