People cry for many reasons, and I’m not against people becoming emotional or being moved by God to react this way its a very natural emotional response. It is not strange to the person who has been unable to cry for YEARS, even with the death of loved ones, because their emotions are not functioning normally. When the grace of God releases them, and at last they can weep, they definitely feel that they have been given a gift by God.
I based the retreat on the fact that bizarre part along with all the other chaos that prevented me from praying at the time. It didn’t seem to edify the church or serve any good which is what Paul said the charisms are supposed to do.Clearly you have not read much of Catholic mystics.
Have you considered that this says more about you than the retreat? If you are so high on not going by emotions, how is it that you base your own judgement upon you “feeling”?

Nobody has a problem with God moving us and humans reacting in emotional ways, at least I’m not. But to call “crying” a “charismatic gift” is a bit strange, what’s next the gift of scratching, the gift of vomiting (this one I found on the web … not made up folks!)?
With respect, this is a judgement that you can only make for yourself. If the retreat does not help you pray more effectively, or does not help you implement the gifts that God has given you to His service, then it is not the most appropriate spiritual formation for you. For others, they may have the opposite expereince. Many lukewarm (or in my case lapsed) Catholics have had the opposite experience, where our prayer life has come alive and we have been able to enter service as Paul has instructed.
Some do. I am involved in a discussion over on the Traditionalist section where this is a problem for many.
The New Testament was never intended to be an exhaustive compedium of the doctrine of the faith, so we do not consider those gifts of the HS listed there to be limiting in any way. God can work however He wants.
They have been given healing by God. Which is grace and can be called a gift. It is not a “Gift of the Spirit,” I do not believe, in the context of this topic.
