My aunts friend got hold of my email…my fault. She sounds like she’s proselytizing me, a revert from a fundamentalist evangelical church. How ironic. I sent here about a 10 page disertation on my conversion from being a staunch anti-Catholic to Catholic. I guess people think we’re stupid when we convert to Catholicism or in my case revert. I was a bible thumping idiot at one time. But that’s for another thread.

Anyway she’s associated with the Assemblies of God…that my so called “Catholic” aunt also attends. I’ve heard my aunt say she would love to be a Messianic Jew. But this lady’s belief about Catholicism is so far off it lines up with Loraine Boettner and Jack Chick. She grew up in a very Catholic family with 4 priests and 2 nuns in the family. She went to Catholic schools her entire life, including Catholic college and taught by some of her cousins.

I’ve often wondered about the first part too. What is a “Messianic Jew” exactly?
A Messianic Jew could also be called a “Christian Jew”, were it not for the…negative ring the term “Christian” has with many Jews, due to Christendom’s multitude of crimes against the Jewish people.

And as for the second part of the question: A Messianic Jew could be a part of the Roman church, he could be a Lutheran, a baptist, etc.
I know that many Messianic Jews, especially in the US, have organized themselves in Messianic Synagogues.

A Messianic Jew is just that, someone who takes Jesus as their saviour, but from the perspective of an evangelical. They observe some Jewish ritual, feast days, interpret scripture as fulfilled in Jesus, though.

I’ve been to a number of services at a local group; small, meeting in a classroom at a former school turned community centre at the time. They read the Torah as it is done in Synagogue, but their attitudes are distinctly evangelical/fundamentalist Christian. Formal, observant Jews reject them as almost traitors of the faith. Like evangelicals, they tend to argue with a certain “insert verses here” or turn the tables ideal of proof. They can’t really support what they believe from a reasonable pov.

There is a wide range of belief among Messianic Jews, but the general idea is that they believe the Torah (first 5 books of the Bible) to be the foundation for their living and belief, with each Messianic group accepting various degrees of the rules and regulations of the Torah.

They consider themselves the authentic Christians because they are more closely connected to how the Christian Jews in Jesus’ time lived. They adhere to Saturday worship and look down on eating pork and such.

Some of the ones I have come across put the New Testament on a lower authority than the Old, and some reject New Testament books like Hebrews which calls the Old Covenant “obsolete”.

In regards to teachings like Faith Alone and Sola Scriptura, some groups of MJs are in favor of those Protestant teachings while others look down upon them. Basically Messianic Judaism is another Protestant denomination with its own spin on the Gospel.

Sounds like another splinter group. More anti-Catholic rhetoric.

This is so interesting.

Are there any MJ’s here? I’m curious as to whether they refer to themselves, in simple terms, as “Christian” or “Jew”, when asked by outsiders what they are.

A woman I recently conversed with via email says she was raised Catholic and attended catholic schools even through college. She has several priests and nuns from her family. But now that she discovered the horrors of the Catholic Church she now says she’s a MJ. What say you.

That’s a pretty narrow-minded definition? Where did you get that from. I’ve met Messianic Jews who were Anglican, Lutheran, even heard about one who is in the Roman church, etc…
And as for your closing remark: Maybe it takes one from the Roman church to notice this (referring to the “it takes one to know one”-principle) 😉

I am not MJ, but I worked closely with MJs for over a month during my visit to New York on the Jews for Jesus summer campaign of 2007.
Messianic Jews (and now I am referring to those I have had relations with) refer to themselves first and foremost as Jewish, as to keep to their roots, but leave no doubt as to their theological orientation, and are confessionally Christians to the core.

I’ve read the term “Christian Jew” in a JFJ-book, and I think it is extremely fitting.

It’s the only group I’ve run into. I have never heard of Messianic Jews as Anglicans, or Lutherans, for example. They all tend to be evangelical in character. Certainly the group I had personal contact with was oriented to a raw interpretation and use of the Bible when it came to study. They were very insistent on what basically boils down to a fundamentalist example.

The leader of the group told me that when he “converted” his family basically turned their back on him as part of the Jewish practise. I really doubt that’s true, rather, a matter of perception on his part. I’ve asked practising Jews what they think, and it amounts to seeing Messianic Jews as betrayers of the Law of Moses in observance and practise. But they don’t strike me as the sort of people who would cut themselves off from son’s and daughter’s otherwise looking for a new interpretation of an old ideal, just as the first Christians did.

coctocatholic.com/forum/

This is a fundamentalist conversion board…
Notice the second category “Dealing with family and friends.”
That the time to read some of the stuff these folks haver to deal with even years after their conversion to Catholicism. you might want to think twice before you convince yourself that Jews don’t practice disowning… It’s true. If it can be true for Christians, it can be true for Jews.

What is a Messianic Jew and how does it relate to Catholicism?
A lot of misinformation here.
Messianic Jews are Jews who believe Yeshua is the Jewish messiah. They do keep the Jewish feasts and holidays. They consider themselves “completed Jews” and for the most part are disowned maybe not by family but by the Jewish community who say they are not Jews at all.

To answer the second part they have nothing to do with Catholism.

His alone, I merely menat that it is possible for a Jewish family to disown or abandon a relative. It happens you know. It happens with Christians. Last time I checked we all bleed red.

I agree that it does happen.

Well, I have met Messianic Jews who were Lutheran, and one who went to an Anglican church.
In Jerusalem I was at a service at a Lutheran Messianic Congregation.

And as for the rejection from family - who are you to say what has happened and what has not? Why do you take the first impression of unbelievers over the word of a brother in Christ?
I know several Messianic Jews who virtually all (id est: NOT all, but over 90%) say the same thing.

Do you mean Jews who converted to those Christian denominations? Because Messianic Judaism is not usually considered the same religion as Christianity, at least by its own adherents.

Most Jews I have seen agree that Messianic Jews are either Christians faking to be Jews, or they are real Jews who are traitors to all other Jews and considered non-Jews now. Both types are considered trash by most Jews I’ve ever talked to.

All Messianic Jews (Jews who believe Jesus is the Messiah) are also Christians. They don’t CALL themselves Christian that often, as that name has been tainted by the multitude of villainies from Christians against the Jewish people during the last 2000 years.
But theologically, Messianic Jews ARE Christians.

I think we’re talking past oneanother here. When I say “Messianic Jew”, I mean ANY Jew who have come to realize that Yeshua IS indeed the Messiah that God promised through the Prophets - regardless of his or or “affiliation” within the Body of Christ.
