This is very complex.
Remember, not just Mexicans walk on their knees up to the shrine. That is done by the Irish on Croagh Patrick, by others on the Scala Sancta in Rome (I have done it myself several times)… and neither of those are Marian devotions.
Remember that Catholic culture is very old and diverse, and there are many different legitimate traditions. Who says just because they are climbing the mountain on their knees to the Guadalupe shrine that it’s a form of Marian idolatry (“Mariolatry”)? It’s a church they are going to, isn’t it?
Making fun of somebody for simply having an image of OL of Guadalupe in their homes is perverse.
