Apparently, the Catholic Church is assisting illegals on Catalina Island as they try to get I.D. cards:

Apparently not. The sad part is priests won’t stand up to the law, for fear of backlash from their bishop. As a Catholic, I refuse to follow any Bishop telling me I MUST help illegals, even if they have kids in America

If I had a family, but I commit a crime such as robbery, should I not get taken to jail? I don’t think the “WHAT ABOUT MY BABIES?!?!?” argument would work there. The fact of the matter is that illegals break the law. I hate to say it, but I do not feel sorry if they have children in the U.S. Its the same reason I’m against abortion. You knew it would happen, and you did it anyway. A stupid idea on your part doesn’t require me to help or support you.

I think the Representative in the article has a good point: ““If the Catholic Church insists on preventing immigration law from being enforced, then they should step up and pay the bill. Let the Catholic Church open up its schools for free and use their vast resources to pay for the benefits of illegals if they feel it’s such a moral issue.”

Update:

At 10 a.m., Rohrabacher and an assistant strode into the church to personally express his concerns, raising eyebrows. Rohrabacher was greeted by Deputy Consul General Juan Carlos Mendoza Sanchez of Los Angeles in the middle of a room where Mexican specialists were typing information into laptop computers from two dozen men and women seeking their services.

But all eyes were on Rohrabacher and Sanchez, who launched into a carefully worded dialogue, expressing strongly opposing opinions.

“This is not done with any type of belligerency,” Rohrabacher added, referring to his unannounced visit.

“Everyone has their own point of view,” Sanchez said. “We are performing this activity under international law.”

“Well, that will be decided in Washington and Mexico City,” Rohrabacher said.

Another update:

No sooner had the congressman left town shortly before noon than local political, business and religious leaders began to distance themselves from the Mexican consul’s program.

But Deputy Consul General Mendoza said: “Everybody knew exactly what was going on here. We are not breaking the law to be here. We are not hiding anything. I explained that to the mayor and others some time ago. Trouble is, right now everyone is feeling the pressure from the congressman.”

“We’ll evaluate the situation,” he added, “then decide whether we should come back again two years from now.”

The Mexican consul’s office first offered passports and photo identification cards to illegal immigrant workers here two years ago, setting up shop for one day in the upscale Catalina Island Country Club restaurant. The matricula cards can be used to establish credit, open bank accounts, buy insurance and apply for government services.

The bulk of business conducted by the deputy consulate on Thursday was in fact issuing passports, Gutierrez said. According to the consulate’s office, 65 passports were issued Thursday in Avalon, and 39 identification cards.

Officials with the consulate’s office said they served roughly 200 Mexican nationals at a similar day-long event last year, which is fairly routine.

The cards in question serve only to identify Mexican nationals to authorities in the United States, Gutierrez said. Some banks, as well as the city and county of Los Angeles, also recognize the cards as identification - but they do not serve as immigration papers or allow people to stay in the country longer than they are allowed, he said.

I have no problem with legal immigration. If illegals would follow the laws and become a natural citizen, then they wouldn’t have the problems in the first place.

The problem here is that illegals need these services in order to become legalized. Stopping these people from giving these services only worsens the illegal immigration problem.

I should know since I was on the other side of these as an illegal immigrant trying to resolve my status and become legalized.

Everyone who hasn’t seen the inadequacies of immigration law thinks it’s easy to do these things, but there are thousand or roadblocks and hundreds of hoops to jump through.

Just to put in in perspective, I’ve lived in the US since I was 11, and didn’t become a citizen until a couple of years ago at 31. That’s right it took 20 years to solve my immigration issues.

That’s why I say Bless the Bishop because thanks to these services people are one step closer to becoming legalized.

Liberal? No. Faithful and practicing? Yes. I happen to enjoy talk radio, but I don’t derive my faith from what the hosts say.

If you would expend as much energy in seeking holiness as you do in trying to place labels upon your brothers in Christ perhaps you won’t be bothered with idle guesswork and conjecture, and true laughter might then come your way.
