aww I’m sorry I offended palmas, really. This isn’t what I was implying at all. I think reverence is very important and the mass should be taken seriously but there is room for a bit of humor.

Again, everyone is missing the point. Do you know why the Mass is referred to as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? Precisely because the sacrifice of Calvary becomes present on the altar at mass.It is because the same victim is re-presented to the Father as was at calvary. When we attend mass, in a mystical way we attend the crucifixion of Christ. Again, I ask the question, would you be playing with a squirt gun at the crucifixion of Christ? There are times to play and joke but this is not one of them. I think the problem with us Catholics in America is that we think that it is always time to play and joke. We rarely realize that there are times for silence and reverance. The mass is a time for silence and reverance. I say play with water guns at youth group or at the parish picnic if you want to do that with your fellow parishoners. But don’t show disrespect for Christ’s sacrifice.
I also challenge you to think about this. I am sure Christ joked around from time to time since he was human. But how do you think he behaved in the Temple or at synagouge? I assure you that it was with the greatest of reverance for His heavenly Father.

One man I know made a comment to his friend about how skimpily girls were dressing and his friend responded “whats the big deal they wear less at the beach”
The point of course is a bathing suit, is suitable for the beach, but not for walking down the street.

Water guns are best left in the hands of children.
Yes you are right, I have found with the American culture that you do want to make a joke of almost everything and most of the time you are not even funny.

You are right that Christ died in bloody agony.

Your sarcasm, however, is actually vicious. If you don’t think it’s appropriate to enjoy a bit of levity near Mass time, then say so. If you want to be pious and tell others how to think, then you should do so in a respectful tone.

If you think that levity is bad, sarcasm is worse. It is condescending, and places you at a higher level than the rest of us. You are exalting yourself above us, and if we are but the least of Christ’s brothers and believe in His teaching, then you are also exalting yourself above him and being sarcastic and rude.

It is perfectly well to have an opinion that piety should be maintained. Yes, I did question it and ask what the “gloom” is about. If you think you are better than others, then the best way to show it is to treat them sarcastically which is what you are doing. You are no friend of dignity when you do so. You have specifically targeted people for your belittling. I’m not impressed with your feigned piety because hostile sarcasm is indicative of what is in your heart – unless, of course, you are “just kidding.” Go ahead – tell us we are all a bunch of idiots. It seems that LatinCat has much the same opinion as you do on this subject, but was able to express it in an unoffensive way. It is possible to disagree with someone and “tell it like it is” without being jerky about it. That’s all.

BTW, just because I made a joke earlier in this thread does not mean I think holy water guns in Mass is a good idea. I agree that we need to retain the reverence in Mass, but, as LatinCat pointed out, this might be a cute idea for youth group or something.

Quite true, I agree totally, but when you get “jerky” it sometimes provokes a response from those who feel jerked. Sometimes that response is good and sometimes bad. Some people come to realize things from calm, studied and dispassionate discourse. Others don’t realize something until it hits right them between the eyes.

The only way I can reconcile these is to take you at your word. If you were not being sarcastic, but just agreeing with what someone said, then I don’t know who said it but I think it’s troubling. I think you are the only one on this thread who has claimed, or even implied, that there is something funny or entertaining about Christ’s death.

You have not hurt my feelings, but I do find it a challenge to take seriously provocative statements claiming that Christ’s passion is a joke. I suppose I had you all wrong, thinking that you were simply putting us down rather than laughing at our Savior’s wounds. This is new territory for me; I apologize for calling you sarcastic.

Thank you. I understand using sarcasm, but when I use it “against” a particular person I understand that it is going to come across as a put down. From a third person observer of that particular verbal transaction, it certainly did seem that way. Maybe I’m oversensitive, but as you were holding others to a high standard of decorum, yes I jumped up and accused you of breaking that decorum and probably did so myself in the process. The reason I thought it was important to jump in is that I think sarcasm used against someone who means you no harm is, well, no sense in repeating it.

And I don’t think that humor in the Mass should come at the expense of a sacramental or of the Mass itself. Sorry, it is too precious to have it reduced to a vaudville routine.

Catholicism is a religion of “both…and,” not a religion of “either…or.” The Mass is both a reliving of the last supper, passion, and death of Our Lord and a celebration of His resurrection and our salvation.

As a reliving of these sad events, the Mass is supposed to be quiet and reverent. As a reliving of the resurrection, the Mass is supposed to be a joy filled occasion. It is not supposed to be an entertainment or a frivolity.

I would have problems attending Mass led by a priest who blesses the congregation with holy water shot from a water gun. I see that as turning a sacramental into a toy. That would be like tying a Confirmation gift with a rosary, turning this meaningful prayer help into nothing more than a beaded ribbon with a crucifix on the end.

The way I would like to see the Mass clebrated is by singing upbeat, positive songs at appropriate times. A priest I heard once described his congregation as funereal, every song they sang sounded like a mourning dirge. If Alan will agree to play the songs just a little bit faster, I will try to keep up when I make my joyful noise.
