As they should. No one is fighting the strawman that Vick should not have gone to jail, yet this strawman keeps getting stuffed. No he didn’t. He signed with the Eagles. Practically, he is set waaayyyy back as a consequence of his crime, as he should be. But he has been allowed to play again.

I do not think there will be a big pot boiling. From what I can tell here, there is not a big crossover between NFL fans and those who think punishment for animal crimes should be life-long.
If someone gave you 90 million dollars at the age of 21 what would you have done? He served his time for his crime. Give him another chance and if he lives up to his potential he will be able to save 10 fold the animals he mistreated. Would Jesus not forgive? It is funny because I’m a Saints fan and hate the Falcons. What he has done is mild compared to what other pro players have done and are doing. It is a dog without a soul and not a human being. God gave us ruler over the animals no?

Rule, yes. Abuse, no. And according to Church teachings, which I read on these boards, animals have souls. Not like ours and they don’t have to work for salvation, but, apparently, the Church now teaches they have souls. That’s fine with me. When I was a kid in parochial school, we were taught they didn’t have souls. Guess I will see my furry friends at the Pearly Gates. :heaven:

Sorry to disappoint but the teaching on animal souls is that they have finite souls, not eternal souls. On the bright side, this is an area that there really is no defined teaching so we surely can believe a variety of things. The thing is, if animals are in heaven, does that mean some will be in hell?

Animals have souls? That is a new one on me. I have a lot of animal souls in my belly. 🙂

Um…I wouldn’t torture animals. You’re acting like he smoked a few joints. Are you suggesting taking pleasure from animal cruelty is a normal human weakness the way drug abuse and sexual sin are?

No not at all. You make an instant millionaire out of someone you going to see some strange things. Dog fighting was apparently common where he grew up. In the end he did his time and he has the earning potential to do more good for dogs than the harm he did. Give him a chance for redemption.

I respect Catholic teaching but who cares if they have finite souls? Do people just focus on this so they have an excuse for abusing animals? Im not saying you do, but it sounds like you are making an excuse for it. Sorry but i dont there will be animals in hell, they are completely without sin.

Why? Catholic sites often reflect Christian teaching, namely that Man is made in God’s image. No one here has advocated causing animals pain, though, just that the act of killing animals is not comparable to killing people. I said earlier that in Texas, for example, such an act is not even a felony. This is not to say that it is not a crime and should not be a crime. No, just that the punishment should not be comparable to crime against people.

Do you not think Vick should ever be able to go one with his life, or that just not enough time has passed? Do you also reject the idea that a jury should be able to assess punishment and the rest of society should honor that?
I feel like some people here (i may be worng cause i dont read minds) are implying that since we have dominion over animals, animal abuse is no big deal. The ‘‘theyre just animals’’ mentality advocates causing animals pain. I dont care what the laws in Texas are, they certainly dont tell me anything about morality. So is abortion moral then since its legal? Wait I d rather not get into that here, but just an example.
I think the crime SHOULD be comparable to killing people. I personally wouldnt trust anyone with the capacity to hurt animals to walk freely in my neighbourhood. It would cause me more anxiety than i need.
I dont know if Vick should ever be able to go on with his life. I think the same of murderers who outwardly seem to be remorseful.

No. They can’t commit a sin because they do what God created them to do unlike Adam and Eve who disobeyed. No free will.

I was taught they didn’t have souls. Now it is that they have finite souls. My thought is God is all Love. He totally loves his creations and isn’t going to destroy them.

Yeah, they thought this since the middle ages at least! The soul is the form of the body, to get all philosophicalish on you.

I’m in the camp of you did the crime, you paid the time, you get to reenter society. That seems to me the normal course of justice.

I don’t think anyone is saying that Vick should still be in jail. We are saying that his lofe of luxury should be over. Let him work at a factory, or get a job connected with his degree from Virginia Tech. I consider what he did to be much worse than gambling, but that will get players suspended for life and no chance at the Hall of Fame (Shoeless Joe Jackson–yeah I know its Baseball, but the MLB and NFL are united in this). SO waht is wrong with Vick having a lifetime suspension? He can re-enter society, but he is done with football. What is wrong with that?

Absolutely nothing wrong with a lifetime suspension. I see Pete Rose who gambled, admitted it, thrown out of baseball and suspended for life never to enter the hall of fame. Please Note: Pete Rose was never charged or convicted of any crime?

I see Mike Vic create the gambling game, gamble on said game, kill numerous dogs in horrible ways, get caught, admit it, convicted of a felony, go to jail, get out and gets a free ticket back to the same starting point. Vic was handed his career back, salary, future in the sport and the possibility of being on a winning team in a future…But Rose gets hosed down? Why? I see their sins as no different. People in positions of power will rationalize murder if the decision to help you is made and this goes across the board. Something is truly wrong here…🤷

Because…

:rotfl:

Pete Rose…

Heaven and Earth will pass away. Yes, this creation is just temporary. However, we also have the imagery of the lion lying down with the lamb. While this is just imagery, it opens the possibilities of what heaven may hold. Here are a couple of links. A lot of Catholic thinking on this comes from Aquinas.

But not while he was a player or a manager for them!!
The point is he gambled on baseball and was banned from baseball. I agree that Michael Vick should be banned from all dog related sports.

I can’t believe I am having to point this distinction out.🤷

*Alright, I have a question on this…since this was brought up about Rose. Why couldn’t the NBL forgive him? Why are we okay with Rose never being permitted to be part of the league anymore? I get the distinction…but why was Rose’s gambling unforgivable? My theory? If you cost these sports organizations MONEY, then they don’t want to have anything to do with you. Kills dogs, kill a person due to a dui…EH…doesn’t matter, as long as you didn’t cost US money. Vick committed a horrific crime, and is invited back…Rose bet money against the reds and is banned? Tell me we don’t have our priorities mixed up in this country.

I have changed my mind with Vick…I don’t care either way. lol I hope he learned his lesson, and is repentant, but not for me to judge. I only chime in here again to show how mixed up our priorities are. *

I just don’t see the big deal about what Pete Rose did. It seemed like a victimless crime to me. I don’t understand our society’s hang up with gambling.

*Me neither…what he did was wrong, but compared to some other ‘crimes?’ And he is banned? :hypno: *
