Microsoft Word is getting politically correct

We’ve come a long way from spell check, folks.

By Mark Sullivan

Microsoft will soon preview a version of Word that will use artificial intelligence to make your writing not just grammatically but politically correct.

Microsoft doesn’t call it a “political correctness check,” but that’s essentially what it is. . . .

.

Microsoft Word will change your words to be ‘gender inclusive’

7 May 2019 • 7:00pm UK Telegraph

Microsoft has launched new software to suggest edits to writing that are politically correct. The US technology giant has included the new feature in its latest version of Word, the popular word processing software.

It will apply artificial intelligence to recommend users to write in a way that does not discriminate against a particular gender.

Users of the new Microsoft Word feature could see suggestions to change “policeman” to “police officer”, for example. . . .

. . . . . Microsoft’s push for gender inclusivity comes amid a wider movement in different sectors . . . .

Microsoft harnesses AI to make Word politically correct

By James Rogers | Fox News

Microsoft is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to boost the use of “inclusive language” in Word. . . .

In addition to “familiar fixes for spelling and grammatical errors,” Ideas in Word will also offer “advice on more concise and inclusive language,” . . .

Microsoft Word has had the ability to check for gender specific language since 2007. If you have a version that old look under options->proof reading->grammar->settings.

Note that the use of AI in this latest feature doesn’t change your words. It makes suggestions. If you don’t like the suggestion don’t use it.

Is there ANYTHING else new in this regard with Word or are you saying there are NO CHANGES concerning the “inclusive language” sphere coming to Word?

But Microsoft is not forcing the user to write in any style . . .
Bold mine.

Notice the changing of my premise.

This is the sign of a lack of a persuasive argument. (And (name removed by moderator)'s argumentation here HAS lacked persuasion).

So a straw-man is created to argue against.
Fallacy of equivocation.

I’m just going to leave this alone. I think you are trying to see a problem where you are not actually experiencing one. Microsoft started using machine learning in word 2 years ago and gender neutral suggestions 12 years ago. And you can turn the feature off or ignore it if you like.

I thought it was liberals who are supposed to be the easily-offended “snowflakes?”

New politically correct features in a new upcoming version of Microsoft Word.

Cathoholic (that’d be me) puts up three differing stories summarizing another example of incrementalist pushing of politically correct behaviors. (Some would say public “thought policing”.)

The proverbial “Fabian Socialist equivalent” speech model.

I use LibreOffice myself. I haven’t really used Microsoft Word in years.

Three of us in my family enjoy writing short stories and poetry. How is it possible to write a story with, say, a racist character without these annoying corrections? I’m trying to imagine how many squiggly lines would end up in a Microsoft Word draft of To Kill a Mockingbird or Tom Sawyer. It reminds me of murder mystery writers finding themselves in trouble for doing web searches on how to poison somebody. I’m seriously considering dusting off an old typewriter and going low-tech . . .

It’s everywhere. If nothing else, people get easily offended by people getting offended.

I’m used to writing theology-related documents where Microsoft is constantly suggesting I change “Ratzinger” to “rat zinger” (Heh, even the CAF spell check gives the red underline for Ratzinger 😝).

And don’t get me started on the bibliographies where most of the sources are Church documents with Latin titles. 😄

The red squiggly lines don’t bother me. I just ignore them. Generally, there is the option to ignore certain rules or add words to the dictionary.

This article seems like someone was just looking for something to be upset about. I guess most news stories fall under that umbrella these days.

Actually, as I have bored you with previously, I do not like Microsoft but am too frugal to purchase an Apple product (example) and hopefully have decent software. However, I struggle along being cost efficient as I am. Now my cell phone is aging and I hope it lives for another 20 years as I use text messenger more than phone calling but it decides to replace my words with its own and unless I carefully scrutinize the message, who knows what its supposed to mean. Even when I catch the error it will refuse to make the change.
So, its like Windows 10 all over again. Which is why I felt compelled to vent. 🙃

I’m in too deep with Microsoft Office. I’ve always had it on my work PCs, and I have gotten used to the way it works. I use Libre Office at home because it’s free, but when I use it I always feel like I’ve been transported 20 years into the past, and I’m always frustrated by the things that I cannot do (or cannot do easily) that I could do in 5 seconds with Office. It works fine for just typing a document or making a simple spreadsheet, but there are many tricks and shortcuts I’ve become accustomed to using in Office that just aren’t options.

I mean, it might be useful for college students with liberal professors, but… This country is CRAZY!

My computer makes me shout A LOT BECAUSE OF THE CAPLOCK BUTTON.

When Webster made the Dictionary - it did not come with an order that “chosen” words must be used. Is Communism acceptable? How about a Dictatorship?

You can turn on and off “spell checking as you type”. It’s under options somewhere.
But then you will have to work to check it yourself.
