The only men allowed are hairdressers? I don’t even want to think about what “hair” they are dressing.

Don’t they got no female hairdressers in Italy? :rotfl:
Well, you see, the women don’t feel threatened by the male hairdressers. For obvious reasons.

Just a thought…try telling her that if she wears bikini bottoms that are exactly the same length and shape as a man’s swim trunks - she can wear the top of her choice.😃

Maybe think she’ll rethink her position!😛
THAT is a really good one!

Don’t know if anyone has said this yet, I haven’t read the whole thread. But did you try the “less is more” talk? That really spoke to me when I was a teenager (which was only 15 years ago). Even with makeup it worked.

I recently asked my 16 year-old daughter if there were any other kinds of swim wear other than bikinis for teenage girls. Not answering my question, she angrily responded that it wasn’t fair that women had to consider such an issue when men get to walk around all summer long without their shirts on.

I told her that both men and women need to be modest in their dress, but I could see her point as well. What is a wise way to address the issue of modesty with a teenage girl when (look around) almost all girls her age are in bikinis at the swimming pool or on the beach? Any thoughts?
You might have her take a look at modest swimwear for women:

Those seem too modest, don’t you think, except maybe the first one. You don’t want her to think that her body is bad, that it needs to be completely covered. Lands End has some very stylish but modest suits, as does LL Bean. You could even have good luck at Target, but they’re mixed in with the not-so-modest ones. Sporting goods stores are good places too, b/c they’re more interested in the utilitarianism of the suit than the look. I’ve also noticed that some two-piece suits, if they’re the “tankini” kind, can be more modest (as well as more flattering) than one pieces. There’s also a TON of “cover-ups” coming out right now that are very popular and really cute.

Is the way that Mary is depicted in icons or as a statue seem to be too modest ? I guess it is relative to your culture. For the Islamic culture, women are to be dressed modestly, even on the street. For the western Catholic culture, it seems to me that women can be dressed somewhat immodestly even in Church or at Church liturgical functions, such as in Los Angeles.

Tell her to move to Africa.

They all go shirtless

Of course, then she has to realize they all swim naked.

😛

I have a TYR suit which is cut like a Speedo. I admit i have not worn it this year because i don’t go to pools anymore. And, i just came back to the Church on April 21, 2007. I used to think i looked fine in it, but it is a bit like a brief. I don’t like swimming in shorts. I am slim, but i think i have gotten a bit old for it. I have not gone swimming this year and don’t plan on it. They are popular outside the USA.

TYR suit - cut like the Speedo . . Mine is a solid blue.
Joseph:

I know the pair - I swim laps in mine. I’m one of those wierdos who do not think that male bodies are gross, disqusting and repulsive. Nor are they a turn-on. Just a visual expression of the image of God. What is repulsive is when guys wear speedos for the purpose of being, or pretending to be, seductive.

We are not Muslim, and while I find it admirable that the Muslim culture encourages modesty, I do not wish for Catholic women to be guilted into dressing as if we were under Sharia law.

A conservatively cut tankini or tank suit is sufficient for modest swimwear.

My suggestion would be go out looking yourself. Find some cute swimwear in styles that you feel are appropriate and let her choose from those. I’ve seen some great racing style on speedo’s website (although some are very high cut around the legs). Another option is board shorts and a fuller bikini top, although that still leaves the belly bare. Sporting goods manufactures don’t have the same guidelines we do.
I never go out in public in a swimsuit or even in shorts, but I do swim laps for fitness at an athletic club. Speedo has a “conservative cut” and that is what I wear. Some of the more modest suits made by fashion-oriented companies “drag” in the water, and that is really annoying when trying to swim as part of a workout. Here’s the latest version of the suit I wear:

I may be coming in on this late but I see nothing wrong with bikinis and guys with shirts off during the summer. Must we be so prudish? They are usually wearing them at the beach or swimming pool, not Church. And to assume that we are fantasizing about them is trying to second guess us. I do not need that judgement from others.

The problem comes in when we read in the New Testatment:
Matt 5:28
28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

If she is 16 and now Modesty is on your mind I think it is too late. I think modesty should be taught at a young age so it seems normal. I also think the kind of friends she keeps is a big part ; I suggest you keep a eye on her. Thats about all you can do with out a Major blowup.

i say this thinking of my cousin who was a wild child; her parents would buy her mini skirts at the age of 7; she was taught to “be sexy is good” and now she is…well…not so modest and has been married 4 times and is 30.

But again, you are assuming I am lusting. That is not anyone’s position, to know what is going in the mind of an individual.

The way I see girls dress at church there needs to be some kind of law! It is disgusting to see women (grown and younger) dress like Britteny spears in church and think its ok.

I don’t assume anything about you in particular one way or the other.
