Several atheist, agnostic, and secular humanist organizations are pushing to establish their own U.S. military “chaplaincy” for soldiers.

As a non-believer, I have to say that the idea of an “atheist chaplaincy” is one of the nuttiest things I’ve heard in a while. As any honest atheist will tell you, atheism is not a belief. Rather, it is merely a lack of belief in gods. So what is an atheist chaplain going to do? Lead a non-service in which atheists can celebrate their non-beliefs? I suspect that most would prefer to just sleep in on Sunday morning.

You’re right, the idea of a chaplaincy for atheists is rather nutty, but I imagine the ploy is not really for the purpose of establishing such a chaplaincy, but rather questioning government support for chaplaincy programs for believers. It’s just a matter of throwing rocks through windows.

Oh I agree with you.Besides, how many of them will still be atheists when they are in the midst of battle with artillary going off and bullets whizzing by? Probably quite a few may change their tune.

This action strikes means as a quite disingenous on the part of these organizations. None of their ideologies are religious positions. It would seem the real motivation to establish another proselytizing avenue to help undermine and discourage religous beliefs.
