President Trump stuck to the script at his “Salute to America” event, striking a patriotic tone in a largely apolitical speech running approximately 45 minutes -CNN

Trump avoided overly political themes, calling the speech a “Salute to America,” - Bloomberg

I did not watch any of it but it seems all the whining about Hatch Act violations and campaign event nonsense was all unfounded, done by those who so desperately wanted it to be true so they could knock Trump.

I think this is where you misunderstand the anti-Trump people here at CAF. I don’t want him to do bad/wrong things so that I can come on here and complain. I want him to do the right thing so that the country moves forward and we aren’t a laughingstock in the world community.

It seems he stayed on script. Good for him. Remember, that is normal, not something to be extolled.

As I had indicated before the speech, I felt comfortable that his speech writers would strike the right tone. It was not Regan of 1986 in NY - too bad, because that is what we really need. But it was not, in the end offensive.

The Trump administration has repeatedly flouted the Hatch Act without apology, amends, or or metanoia. One would have to have a distorted view of reality not to accept that. The concern about what he would do at the in this event was based in the facts of prior bad acts, and the fact that he did cordon off areas to use the event in a partisan way. He did not go so far as to make the speech political. But, if anything was irrational, it was not the concern.

Not my opinion, but my recall of the sourced discusssion on another, recent thread, in which a contrast was made between administration response to the OSA findings on Conway, and the handling of such matters in the Obama administration. There should be no controversy about the simple fact that the Trump administration has been recognized by the OSA as having made repeated violations of the Hatch Act, has failed to make any public act to correct the problem; Conway has even publicly trivialized the law.

In light of that documented past behavior, it is not the least bit surprising that some were wary about how he might handle his Fourth of July event. His partisan VIP seating was added to concerns.

Probably because the idea that it is illegal for a senior administrative official to publicly advocate for the stated policies of the administration is pretty ridiculous.

There is no Hatch act proscription against such activities AFAIK.

People that against who findings were made by the OSC were promoting party candidates, while compensated with taxpayer dollars.

And one does should not think that they get to pick and choose which laws to follow based on their own ideas of which ones are “pretty ridiculous”. When Obama officials were criticized for Hatch Act violations, they apologized and stopped the misconduct, and where appropriate, paid back expenses.

I probably mixed up the two or got it off the bing search. You are right. No problem.

At the same time, violations of the Hatch act would have to be “alleged”, there have been no penalities handed out from what I know.

Allegations seem to frequently be made, penalties rarely meted out.
