Military Spectacle for July 4

I’ve often wondered why the Democrats don’t always win every national election, given that there are more Democrats than Republicans (or at least that is what I was taught in high school sociology class - it’s possible the statistics may have changed).

Apparently not all high ranking officers were “ordered” to be there, since some won’t be.

When you produce the officers’ statements of why they will be in attendance, we can examine their motives.

And no, I see no parallel at all between the July Fourth events in DC and Tienanmen Square, any more than I see a parallel between the latter and the parade I’m going to watch. As I mentioned before, there will, at minimum, be American Legionnaires, National Guard, JROTC (probably the latter with a drill team) and if we’re lucky, some biplanes overhead with that red, white, and blue smoke, and (not at the same time) at least one flyover by the Air National Guard. And I am sure people will cheer them all, just as they always do . Probably not even the local Dems will get all killjoy sour and avoid it out of Trump hatred.

I do expect a few little kids will cry when the inevitable loss of the ice cream off a cone happens.

It’s true that there are static displays at open houses all the time on posts and bases throughout our country. Only this is the National Mall and it’s to feed the ego of the President.

Just two tanks and two Bradleys is pretty pathetic, anyway. They are not part of some greater military display or salute. I would not be surprised if they end up somewhere near the VIP area so they can be in the TV shots of the speech.
What do you want, an entire Armored Brigade Combat Team on the Mall to make it not pathetic? Soldiers are on leave this time of year. If you are going to have anything, this is the best answer. A handful of vehicles as static displays.

I can see why one who disfavors American independence would also hate Trump. Same mindset. The Americans who hate America hate him too.

What a joke this is turning out to be! First Trump is hated and condemned because the event is too “grandiose”. Now it’s “pathethic” because there aren’t more tanks and Bradleys.

This kind of opinion takes away all your credibility. The “VSG” does not represent America.

Ok, you need to pick your argument and stick with it. Either it’s too military or it isn’t military enough. Since the vast majority of Americans have never seen a tank in person, having a few on display is a pretty cool idea. It allows people to see military vehicles up close but it doesn’t cause hundreds of soldiers to miss out on a weekend with their families.

Oh, I think I have a coherent position. Trump WANTS a huge parade with all sorts of military hardware and flybys and the like, but he’s only getting 2 and 2. Just two lonely tanks and two Bradleys. That was my point. It’s not at all what he wants after seeing the Bastille Day parade.

What the hell does a military parade have to do with Independence Day anyway…it’s a day for celebrating our Independence from England…our birth as a nation…fireworks…parties…family BBQ’s…sporting events…celebrating who we are as a nation…that’s what we as Catholics should be thanking God for…but all we get here on CAF is bickering and arguing…hold military parades on Veterans Day…or Memorial Day…or V-E Day… sheesh…

NOOO! It’s too crowded!!
It’s one of those events everyone should go to once, right? But yes, I agree it’s too crowded! We went the first year we lived here (1987) and loved seeing the fireworks display from the river, while sitting under the Arch. We are old fuddy duddies and don’t usually go to any of the community events, preferring cookouts with friends, but we are lucky enough to be able to see the fireworks from Webster Groves at our house. Unfortunately, we have to drug our dog who has severe PTSD during thunder and summer fireworks events.

The graph you posted shows Trump and Obama are different by only a few percentage points. To most normal people that would qualify as “about where Obama was at the same time”. I suppose you would like to quibble over the exact definition of “about” though.
The point in question was this:
Polls vary, and they vary from time to time. At the time of this poll Trump’s and Obama’s popularity were about the same, with Obama’s sinking and Trump’s rising.
For no apparent reasons the poster linked to a poll from June 2018 and suggests, elliptically, that Trump polls are changing and that he might overtake Obama.

The reality is that apart form a brief honeymoon bump, Trump’s disapproval has been very steady in a manner that is unlike what we have seen before where changing events drive trends in poll numbers. With respect to Obama, the data also show that Trump has been and continues to meet with higher disapproval. it is also worth noting that in polls that differentiate the degree of disapproval - strong versus somewhat. Trump has, beyond the brief honeymoon, has, in these first years of his presidency, had steady and unprecedentedly high numbers in the strong disapproval category. Those are the simple facts, presented to counter the spin.

Well yes. If you like sitting in the sun in 95 degree weather with 99 % humidity. 😰 I can see Webster’s displays from my house too. 🎆

Luckily my cat isn’t one bit fazed by the noise. Growing up, our dog used to hide under the bed. I wonder why this difference between dogs and cats?

The number of registered Democrats has tended to be a little bit larger than the number of registered Republicans, but neither constitute a majority of the electorate. About a third or more identify as independent.
