Milo Yiannopoulis and Ann Coulter plan return to Berkeley

Some people feel the Catholic Church’s position on same sex marriage is hate. If they can ban Milo and Coulter…they can ban a Priest or other Catholic speaker from speaking.

Free speech sometimes means putting up with speech you find disgusting, primarily because YOUR speech is next…as some people will say its disgusting.

If you don’t like their speech…don’t go. Its kind of like changing the channel on your TV.

That’s what I don’t understand about the whole situation. Of course, those on the left are only too ready to use it as an excuse to carry on as usual because they are so afraid of what these people will say. There is no debate anymore. Everything is identity politics; the goal is to shut down your opponent.

People can say whatever they want, but again, the first Amendment does not guarantee the right to a platform. Shouting drunken slurs at a bar might be considered free speech, but that doesn’t mean the bar owner can’t kick you out.

Also, content does matter. If NAMBLA were to speak at a college, would you be able to “change the channel”? Or would you say, “Hmm, maybe this isn’t the best idea?”

Which is definitely a tactic you see with neocon pundits like Yiannopulos and Coulter. Did you watch Milo’s appearance on Bill Maher? His idea of “debating” was to insult Maher’s other guests, and then call foul when they got annoyed.

I would say " follow the constitution and settled law." If you don’t like either, then there is a process to change it… and the process does NOT include breaking the law or violence, no?

A tactic of Coulter? If it was up to you, she wouldn’t even have a chance to speak! Its kinda hard to agree or disagree with someone when they aren’t even allowed to present an argument. Is debate on a college campus such a threat? If I recall correctly, last time it wasn’t Ann Coulter or Yiannopulos’s supporters who were rioting, looting and burning.

I don’t understand. If you don’t agree with NAMBLA or whoever, why can you simply not attend the event? Why do you on left think that you have a right to shut down anyone with whom you disagree?

UC-Berkley is a public university.

The NFL is a private organization and can do whatever it wants. There’s already another thread about that.

How does the constitution and/or settled law prohibit UC Berkeley from denying a forum to certain speakers?

It’s interesting to me that those that are concerned about Milo getting to blather about his support of conservatism and child rape and Anne having the right to say nothing useful and just trying to be as offensive as possible seem to totally lack concern over Kaepernick losing his career over political speech.

I guess what you’re saying is the public university is the garbage disposal for all ridiculous speech, but everyone else is allowed to limit that speech. Makes sense.

Well, unless a forum only consists of people with the same ideology, there is bound to be disagreement in political threads. This board has more liberals on it now than it used to, so there’s way more arguments.

If I recall correctly, in early 2016, Trump had barely any support on here and almost everyone was conservative (there were exceptions like Sy_Noe of course).
 
I seem to remember Coulter making a big fuss about still going to speak at Berkeley after being dis-invited and then not actually showing up. How cant this be a “return” if she did not go the first time around?

The question is about whether a person has the right to speak at the university when they were invited as guest speakers. Is that really such an extreme position?
