From USA Today:

ST. PAUL (AP) — The Catholic archbishop for the Twin Cities defended his right Monday to speak to fellow Catholics on social issues, and said a shrinking Roman Catholic church is no reason to consider a more liberal stance.

“We’re part and parcel of the culture, so it’s important for us to be involved with those discussions and have our say,” Nienstedt said. He said Jesus Christ directed his followers to “either be hot or cold, but if you’re lukewarm, I don’t want that. So we want people who live their faith.”

Good for Archbishop Nienstedt! He is being a true shepherd to his flock.

We may get the Church in America straightened out after all! There’s hope! Yippeee! 😃

"The archbishop, who recently angered some of the area’s 800,000 Catholics with the mailing of an anti-gay marriage DVD, said he believes spiritual leaders have a duty to talk to their flock about issues they see as important — even if some of those views might be unpopular with prospective churchgoers.

“We’re part and parcel of the culture, so it’s important for us to be involved with those discussions and have our say,” Nienstedt said. He said Jesus Christ directed his followers to “either be hot or cold, but if you’re lukewarm, I don’t want that. So we want people who live their faith.”"

Rise and Shine. I believe that once the bishops in America begin to straighting up, the whole world also will.

Is his opinion that if someone is pro-choice that they shouldn’t attend mass?

Definitely not. Nor is that the Church’s teaching. Mass is for sinners more than for saints, after all. What those who are pro-choice ought to do is conform their consciences to the teachings of the Church instead of the society in which they live. Christ calls us to be faithful to God not to the political whims/mores of the world. If any Catholic is vocal in his support of abortion he should not receive the Eucharist until he’s recanted such a position. To receive the Eucharist while openly opposing Church teaching is not only a sin but a scandal.

Hey, I am impressed, in the Twin Cities no less. It is so heartening to see an archbishop not shrink from the truth, or avoid controversy.

Interesting thread…Luke-warmness is a scary place to be…Churches need to have a Corinth church housecleaning way of life…Sin in the camp affects all…There was man fornicating with his MIL…Someone who keeps getting drunk, habitual liars, fornicators ect…We shouldn’t even be associated with them…

1 Corinthians 5

1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

We went through a tough time a year ago with our assistant pastor who was with us many years…He worked in the daycare during the day as one of his positions…
One of the employees of the daycare was going was going through a divorce…Contrary to all the church rules he proceeds to “help” this distraught woman…Low and behold one of our members saw them together in another town…
He was called in that afternoon to see the pastor and then the church leaders, then our bishop was called in…He was relived of his position when he acknowledged the truth…He was offered council and was allow to come as a member… He refused and did not want to break the relationship…The pastor, leaders and the bishop put him out of the church…The following Sunday the pastor shared what happened and the people were shocked and hurt…VERY few disagreed…This all went down in a week…It really shook up the church but it really
cemented us and caused us to draw closer to the Lord and each other…shalom…
K

This situation really put across the need to pray for those in authority over us…How they are target by the enemy…

Great Scriptures for our days. since so many are quick to be acceptable to the culture of our days. St Paul also condenms the cowards.
here is a great video.

Good for the Bishop. We need more like him. isn’t that St. joan of Arc church in his diocese, the one that gave birth to the “Rainbow sash” movement? If so, it was even more crucial that he speak out.

As a member of the St. Paul/Mpls. Archdiocese I don’t know that that parish started the “rainbow sash” movement, but they certainly embraced it at one time. Archbishop Nienstadt has definitely squashed all such efforts there. As I understand it the Bishop replaced the leadership of the parish. Since then we haven’t had any more such nonsense from that quarter.

A lesbian (who was on the staff at the Cathedral as an artist and has since been let go) tried to organize a protest against the Bishop’s DVD campaign by asking people to give their DVDs to her to make an art project out of them. I don’t think she got many and nothing more came of it. So, the “movement” has been dealt a serious blow within the Church here, thank God. We are very, very blessed to have Archbishop Nienstadt after years of neglect by his predecessors.

I once attended that church when our daughter was living in the twin cities area…when mass was over, I stepped outside and looked at the front of the church to make sure I was at a catholic church. God Bless the archbishops work, we have prayed for him.

Thank you for your reply to my query. If your response is correct - and I suspect that it is - then the OP’s title for this thread was perhaps chosen more for dramatic effect than for accuracy.

Of course, those who are lukewarm need the Church most. Unfortunately, in our society those who are lukewarm don’t often have the common sense to keep quiet when they disagree with the Church. I have to wonder how many polls that supposedly show the majority of Catholics do not support Church teaching on various sexual matters are responses from the lukewarm who hardly ever darken the door of their parish church. They shouldn’t respond out of their ignorance, thereby giving the Church they claim as theirs a bad name and so a false impression of what the faithful members actually believe and live by.

No the title for thread was -as per forum rules- the title of the actual news article.

Just curious. What do you think would happen if the church got serious and stated clean house and "turn them over to satan…Like when they removed our pastor that was commuting adultery…We actually had a few people leave the church because he was put out…What would happen if they stated calling out those in adulterous/promiscuous lifestyles…Or those who are habitual liars or regularly getting drunk?

A simple click on the news link would have shown you the accuracy of the title, and stopped a baseless allegation.

I’ll admit, I shared your suspicion until I, too, followed the link. And after reading the article, I am not sure that the archbishop would approve of the title given to the article. for the reasons Della has already mentioned.

Although that sounds good, it actually is the heresy of Donatism, particularly when one considers the clergy.

What is needed is for the Gospel to be boldly proclaimed in love and without fear. The whole Gospel…including the parts that make the PC “Cafeteria Catholic” / “Catholic in Name Only” types upset. They will either reform, be marginalized by their own dissent, or leave.

As far as private sin, let it be dealt with privately. We have a whole Code of Canon Law that deals with these issues. Even excommunication / suspension should be handled privately. The only time these matters should be made public is in the event that the faithful are scandalized (e.g., when a public dissenter publicly attempts to receive communion)

That sounds good but in the Corinth church they called it out…I sure they could be originally called on it but if they refuse to change…I know the issues with our ex pastor was done just with a few, but if it was let go it would have done more damage…That whole sinning with the MIL was just being tolerated…
