The city of Toronto barred the reigning Miss Universe from opening a local festival out of concern that the position is demeaning to women and promoted sexual stereotypes, reports the CBC.

Toronto native Natalie Glebova, crowned Miss Universe in May, was told she could open the Taste of Thailand festival at the city’s Nathan Phillips Square only if didn’t wear her tiara or sash and was not referred to as a beauty queen. Organizers were told they could only refer to her as “an individual of note contributing to our community.”

According to a city bylaw, “activities which degrade men or women through sexual stereotyping, or exploit the bodies of men, women, boys or girls solely for the purpose of attracting attention,” are not permitted on Nathan Phillips Square.

I didn’t read the article, but I am very familiar with the by-law. It is an impressive and fair way of including many different groups with dignity. The sexual stereotype part is only an extension of the general worry at City Hall about portraying any group of people (covered in the Charter) in a derogatory, humiliating, and unfair way.

So far the by-law has been fair to Catholics and other religious groups. When the Politically Correct lobbied to first abolish the Christmas Tree and then lobbied to rename it an Annual Winter Solstice Festive Greenery, the Mayor said something like “Get a grip. It’s a Christmas Tree.” So now there is not one but a whole gallery of Christmas Trees at Christmas. Each tree represents a different cultural group. There is one for people whose loved ones have died in the previous year. There is a menorah, and lights for the Hindu holiday. All sorts of things.

It’s great. At least we got that one right.

ani,

It does not sound right if they have to rename the truth.

It wasn’t right and City Hall didn’t let them get away with it.

So, there was no “Miss Canada” in the Miss Universe pageant? (I don’t know because I don’t really watch those things.) If there was, and she had won, would they have banned her from the function, too?

Nathans Phillips Square is the front yard of Toronto City Hall. It has no relation to the Miss Canada or the Miss Universe Pageants.

Oh, I still don’t get it. It was a “Taste of Thailand” festival. What relation does this have to Toronto City Hall? In front of our City Hall, we have all kinds of things: car shows, art exhibits, ethnic festivals, etc. No one thinks they are connected to City Hall, they are just using the public space. How offensive could Miss Universe really be? I mean come on, this is a country that will now allow gay couples to be married in City Hall!!! I guess seeing them coming down the steps kissing would be a lot less offensive than seeing someone in a tiara. :ehh: Sorry, but this whole thing is nonsense. I also would like to know if they would have done the same thing if it was Miss Canada who was reigning Miss Universe and not someone from another country. That was just curiosity.
