A teenage girl whose disappearance in Rome has remained a mystery for 30 years was kidnapped for sex parties by a gang involving Vatican police and foreign diplomats, the Roman Catholic Church’s leading exorcist has claimed, reports The Uk Telegraph in a story published in The Sydney Morning Herald.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/cathnews/RSS/~4/ledmDsspjRE

Mark Shea:
This is red meat for the media, of course. And given what has come out over the past ten years it cannot, alas, be automatically ruled out as impossible.
Nonetheless, it should also be noted that Fr. Amorth is one of the most unstable and unreliable personalities it has ever been the misfortune of the Church to see elevated to the status of Folk Hero. Jimmy Akin has documented some of Fr. Amorth’s impossible to believe declarations. In addition, he has made reckless pronouncements about everything from Harry Potter to Medjugorje, thereby endearing himself to people in need of another Conservative Folk Hero.
With this latest reckless claim, Fr. Amorth simultaneously manages to titillate the God-hating, anti-Catholic English press and Traditionalist-minded Catholics who eagerly want to believe the worst about the post-conciliar Church.
The problem: where’s the beef? What’s the evidence? How does he know? Why should we believe him, given his track record of demonstrably and documentably false pronouncements? Indeed, what evidence do we have for most of what Fr. Amorth says about anything? The elevation of this man to Reliable Inside Source is one of the more mysterious phenomena in Conservative Catholic circles. Without evidence or proof of any kind, all we have is one more sensational claim by a man with a long history of baseless sensational claims. Get back to me when there is some There there. If his claim is vindicated by evidence, I’ll take him seriously. If, however, he provides no evidence for his claim or, worse still, evidence is found to disprove his claim, I think the sensible thing is to stop paying attention to him or taking him as a serious source of information or guidance. And I think his history up till now is such that we should take this claim with a huge grain of salt.

I do not understand Mark Shea’s comments about traditionalist Catholics. I do not understand why Fr Amorth would lie about something of this scale and why he has not not presented evidence for his claim.

People have a thousand and one reasons to lie, or in some cases tell a lie thinking it’s the truth. How do you suppose he knows this? I’m trying to be charitable here not for charity’s sake but to not get banned. I read one of his books, I think it was “Confession of an Exorcist”, there is some Malachi Martin-ish stuff in there. Was he the man who said in an interview that he conducted 70000 exorcisms?AFAIC the mystery as to the young girl’s fate still remains.

Besides – do you really think the media is really going to give two rips about the girl? They don’t care. I will bet you anything that this will be used as a bludgeon to try and silence the Church again. If this were, say, a top (but mentally-iffy) chief adviser at the White House making the same allegations but concerning members of Obama’s staff, the media would right now be renting out a chorus of crickets to issue a strongly-worded chirp on the matter*. All they care about is “Ha-ha! We’ve not got more juicy dirt on the Catholics – THIS will get them to shut up and acquiesce while Obama shreds religious liberty!”

*With a tip of the hat to I wish I could remember whose name for that turn of phrase.

I don’t think anyone, especially Mr. Shea, is accusing the Father of lying. I’ve done a bit of studying on exorcists, and it seems that the job takes a severe toll on most clerics who perform them, and it isn’t a stretch to think that the Father has become a bit “unbalanced” at the end of his long career. It seems Malachai Martin suffered from similar problems, and other exorcists have reported the work took a serious toll on their spiritual and mental health. He is also elderly, is he not?

One cannot put all the blame on the “evil media” for reporting such a story, however. It IS a juicy story after all.

Media claim Fr Gabrielle Amorth has performed 70000 exorcisms. But I read that he would of had to perform 8 exorcisms a day without any days off for 25 years straight to do that many. How is that possible?

Somehow the 6 inch rainbow trout turned into a 10-foot white shark. Better go get a good amount of grains of salt.

I think that is just a bogus figment of his imagination. One major Italian newspaper reported the same story but it also adds that the comment is written in Fr. Gabriele Amorth latest book “The last exorcist”. If what he says were true that would mean that he has evidence for his statements and he has an obligation to inform the police about it.

Read Armorth’s books. While much of what he writes is fine; he says some pretty outlandish stuff now and again. I don’t think this is the media. I think it is Armorth.

Like how youths are regularly enrolled into satanic cults simply by going to clubs. They go to clubs, do drugs, next thing you know they’re worshipping Satan.

And kids dressing “goth” is a sign of posession.

Rock and roll is satanic.

There are others. He tends to meld issues of mental illness into what he sees as posession. His approach is different than any other exorcist I have read.

I frequent the clubs with Catholic friends and all we do is drink and dance
