If you notice, I put my remarks into two separate posts. One addressed the skipping of Mass and the other concerning the facts about Planned Parenthood. I made one point and then brought up another. It is done on almost every thread I’ve viewed.*

OK, I will get myself to confession as soon as I can.

As to Orlando being a huge place and must have tons of Catholic churches. That may be true, but the closest one to get to from the theme parks is not easy to get to without a car. (which we didn’t have).
We would have had to call a cab to get us there and back. I have heard mixed reviews of how successful that can be. People have paid as little as $10 and as much as $40 or $50. People have gotten there in as little as 10-15 minutes, others have taken 45 minutes to an hour. So I didn’t just assume that there was no opportunity for us to attend mass. I did look into it. But when the opportunity came up with these reservations, it was something that I knew my daughter would love.

Maybe I am trying to justify something that I really can’t, but our reservations were for breakfast at Cinderella’s castle. (a place that get’s completely booked within 5 minutes of reservaton lines opening.) By the time we get back to Disney, she will not care about the princessess. We did stop and say a little prayer that morning, not that that really matters).
And, we really do not have the money to spend on Disney either. This is a luxury that we allow ourselves probably once every 10-15 years. We took our 4 year old this year, and she will probably not see the parks again until she is in high school or college. (Heck, I was almost 30 when I went for the first time, and this was just my second trip) .

So yes, my hubby and I will get to confession and get this off our souls. We were due to go anyway.

thanks everyone

Christie
Also, think long and hard about what you did. You are not really sounding very contrite here.
One must be sorry for sin, not just rattle them off in the confessional.

You chose “something your daughter would love” over your Sunday obligation. You chose to keep 50.00 for a cab, over your Sunday obligation. You chose keeping an hour of your time on vacation, instead of giving the amount that you needed to make Saturday mass.

Christ hung on a cross only three hours for you. He was only whipped, spat on, insulted, pierced with thorns on his head, nailed to a piece of wood and died a painful death for you. For all that, you chose the Disney Princesses for your daughter whom you would not even have if it weren’t for the blessings of Our Lord.

Hope that helps with your “humble and contrite heart”.

And BTW, my daughters are six and eight. I know where you were coming from. But let me tell you this, my hubby’s job sent us to Orlando two years ago. My daughter was four. She doesn’t remember half of it, including the Princesses.

the funny thing is that the $50 saved on cab fare was more than likely spent on that breakfast…what irony…looks like the cab ride to Mass may have been cheaper than the breakfast

I am really astonished and disappointed at the number of people who came to the defense of Disney in such a short amount of time. I wonder how quickly the evil of abortion would end if the many Christians in the world would come to the defense of the unborn who cannot speak for or defend themselves? Just a thought…

Each year, many Christians spend money on Disney products and theme parks, often through their church participation in the Night of Joy or the special epcot weekend for home schoolers. When I informed my Christian homeschool group of over 100 members, I received many of the same type of responses. In order to provide fun for their families, they will continue to give money to Disney who has sponsored a gay Father’s Day event for the last several years as well as continuing to fund Planned Parenthood on a corporate level for many years. (see www.fightpp.org)). How dare I nudge the consciences of my fellow Christians. I informed those who may not have known which is what RCIADAN did. Anyone can do the research themselves. It is not difficult. I personally found out about this info about PP and did the research myself. Now it is up to each individual how he will respond. And, God is watching and will be asking each one of us on our judgement day, What did You do for me? As for me and my family, we will abstain from any and all Disney.

How disappointing we are when we chose to not live our faith outside of the church walls. I thought we were supposed to be different, the light of Christ, etc.

I know very similar questoins to this have been posted, but I still do not feel MY question has been answered. Here goes…
My family and I were on vacation in Disney World last week. We managed to get nearly impossible to get breakfast reservations, but the only day available was Sunday morning. If we did not accept that day and time, we would have missed out. We went to breakfast with our 4 year old, and skipped mass. I have been having the Catholic guilts all week. Was this a sin? Do we need to get to confession ASAP before receiving communion at mass tommorrow?

Thanks All

Chris
Did you consider going to the Saturday Vigil? Did not the local Churches have a Sunday evening Mass; normally LifeTeen? Just think, the greatest breakfast was missed, the Bread of Life. Since you ask (I do not consider this as a judgment) yes it was a sin that could have been avoided. Yes all grave/serious sins must be confessed before receiving communion. God Bless

But, but, but…she got a Magic Wand!

Truly, this just shows the poor Catechisis being passed around. I was there at one point too. I could easily rationalize away why a breakfast at Cinderella’s castle was more important than mass. Traveling and all, you know!
I am very blessed to have been brought to my current parish and learned what I didn’t know or didn’t want to see. I pray the OP gets there too.

Well I suppose I’ve learnt a couple of things today on these forums. One was it’s against the rules to use missals at Mass…that’s if you aren’t hearing impaired. And that going to Disneyland is evil. Thanks for the enlightenment my friends.

I’ve never been to Disneyland, never cared to go there. I’ve been to Epcot though once. I didn’t realize that they supported gay rights and abortion at all. And I did some research myself, although, I’m not very smart about much…I did manage to find something about them holding some sort of gay day, …and they gave money to the Orlando based Planned Parenthood in conjunction with a bunch of other organizations they gave monies to. Sorry about sounding like I promote PP by saying what I did; because I don’t promote them at all.

The Mass External Participation
  1. Attend the Mass with a spirit of prayer, praying as the church teaches us to pray, avoiding distractions. Be one with the words, actions, and gestures of the celebrant, who acts in the person of Christ.
  2. Listen, respond, acclaim, sing, or keep opportune silence, in order to facilitate union with God and to deepen your reflection of the word of God.
  3. Follow the directions to stand, sit, and kneel–and be serene–even if you see someone who doe snot do so.
  4. Be punctual. This is a consideration detail for Christ our Lord, himself, and for others who are attending Mass. Arrive before the priests goes to the Altar. Leave only after the priest has left.
  5. Dress properly as for an important meeting and not, for instance, as if you were going to participate in a sport. Dress ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of th Mass. (CIC 1387)

I do that…🙂 But I also take my own missal, no one has ever said I couldn’t do that till I started coming here and reading these forums. But thats not the subject anyway…I forget now where that thread about missals is.

Missals are a good thing, regardless of the opinions you may see expressed on these or any other forums. Many times, having your missal with you can let you follow along when it is difficult to hear (deaf or not, those stuations arise). Also, you can be aware if there are liturgical abuses present if you have your missal with the rubrics. Besides that, most missals have a section with wonderful prayers and devotions and exasminations of concience, etc.

If every one would get off thier wallet and buy a missal, which does’nt cost so very much, the parishs could save alot of money by not having to provide missalets!

missing mass while on vacation

I feel for the OP. He/she asked a logical question and many posters jumped right into this person’s heart and decided his/her intentions. Advice is great, but bashing isn’t so much. Go to confession OP, that’s all that needs to be said. Tisk-tisking for the cost of the lunch or missing a beautiful church is not constructive and downright nasty IMO.

As for missing Mass on vacation… okay, so you messed up…

But… as a rule of thumb, we always look up the local parishes whenever we go on vacation… and call for Mass times and schedule our plans appropriately.

Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine is right across the street from Disney (huge church right off Interstate-4), and they have lots of Mass times you could have made…
maryqueenoftheuniverse.org/index.html

Next time, just plan ahead.
Going to breakfast at Disney is TONS of fun… but priority should have been Mass. You could have easily made plans to get to a later Mass after the breakfast…

We LOVE Disney and go every single weekend with our annual passes. It’s glorious family time and a wonderful experience for our family… I’m glad you enjoyed your trip!

Please go back to post 15. The OP even checked what mass to go to and disregarded it. Too much money, not enough time. Did you go to the “beautiful church” website? The point was that it was almost on Disney grounds.
While we all are taken in by "the near occasion of sin’ sometimes, rationalizing it afterward leads to a “I’m not really sorry but I have to go to confession” deal.
As I stated in my post above, this is poor catechisis. The OP had no clue of the gravity of missing mass and still came back to explain the actions with no remorse. Just the idea that missing Disney was bigger than missing mass. (she didn’t make it to Disney until she was 30. Well I was 45, big deal)

Too often we are being nice and don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. This has led to the disregard of sin in many places. Some things written here are not just for the poster but for others reading it. We all need to know the gravity of it so we can plan ahead.

We are going to Ft. Lauderdale next week. My hubby is being sent to MSCE bootcamp. He will be in class all day for 14 days. While my children and I are going to St. Gregory’s in Plantation for the Sunday and All Saint’s Day masses, he will not be able to attend. I went to my Pastor and explained the circumstances. My hubby was granted dispensation for those days. We were not and will be packing church clothes.

Going to mass on vacation should be as vital as packing one’s clothes. All of us need to remember that.

Good for you. To realize that even though you don’t “feel” like it was wrong, that you submit yourself to the authority of the Catholic Church.

I know that one confession I had went along the lines of "usually I am deeply sorry for my sins but I don’t “feel” bad about what I have done but sincerely fear the pains of hell " We can’t always trust how we feel about things and that “nagging guilt” even when we try to reason it away is there for a reason.

That is why one of the reasons we have the gift of confession. Our sins can be forgiven even when we have “imperfect contrition” when it impells us to the sacrament of Penance and the process of of repentance can be brought to completion.

**1453 **The contrition called “imperfect” (or “attrition”) is also a gift of God, a prompting of the Holy Spirit. It is born of the consideration of sin’s ugliness or the fear of eternal damnation and the other penalties threatening the sinner (contrition of fear). Such a stirring of conscience can initiate an interior process which, under the prompting of grace, will be brought to completion by sacramental absolution. By itself however, imperfect contrition cannot obtain the forgiveness of grave sins, but it disposes one to obtain forgiveness in the sacrament of Penance.

God Bless,
Maria

You are in luck. Next time you go to the Magic Kingdom (when your daughter is old enough to drive), you will know there are 37 Catholic churches, shrines, and cathedrals within 20 miles of Mickey’s front door (most not even 6 miles), with a TON of Saturday and Sunday Mass times.
masstimes.org/dotnet/showchurches.aspx?type=uscity&q=&country=United+States+of+America&city=Orlando&countrycode=US&statecode=FL
I, too, would be torn between the money for the breakfast and Mass. But I am older, and fortunately not responsible for a 4 year old at Disney World (I am responsible for a 5 and 7 year old, though).

If the Powers That Be at Disney had any brains and wanted that Catholic dollar (along with a host of other faiths), they would get a priest or two from the Dioces of Orlando to celebrate Mass on the premesis; or in the alternative, shuttle people for FREE to Mass, shabbis, or the congregation of their choice.

Too often we are being nice and don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.

True enough, but if you know you are being a little mean in your comments, why not soften the blow (while getting your point across?) A little Christian kindness to go along with the education…

You poor thing. I guess you’ve learned the lesson to be careful what you ask around here.

My simple thoughts: Mass is an obligation as well as a joy for us. You need to choose what’s important to you. As a Catholic, the only choice is Mass. Plan around it, just as you would a trip to visit a friend living in the area. This was an opportunity to teach your daughter that going to Mass is important, more important than anything else. If means renting a car for one day, or taking a cab, or whatever it takes to get there, that’s what you have to do. I made poor choices when my kids were little, not taking them if they didn’t feel like going, choosing soccer games over church…and I really regret it now.

Don’t beat yourself up. Go to confession, talk it out with your priest. He’ll have some good advice for you.

Deb

I hope that none of the Disney nay-sayers use any form of Microsoft Software. Bill Gates donates to PP.

And with response to the original question, missing mass on vacation is NEVER excusable. You have the tools to find Mass times in the area, use them. If you wouldn’t be able to go to Mass because it doesn’t fit in the schedule or it’s too far away, I would pick a different location, or change the itinerary.

As does every large company. Unfortunately, if you live in a city or are not completely self-sufficient, growing your own food without any store-bought seeds or earth, and building your own house from trees that you cultivated yourself and bricks that you made by hand in your own kiln, then you have probably unwittingly given at least some money to Planned Parenthood, along the way.

By the way, UNICEF also supports Planned Parenthood, so don’t give your kids UNICEF boxes this Hallowe’en.
