Hello Kate, I just want to say I know how very, very rare it is to have a large Catholic family in modern England. I really admire you and your husband’s openness to life. I can’t imagine personally how I would manage the logistics of a larger family (this has more to do with me being orphaned as a teen, as I have felt I am always having to figure out every aspect of life without any advice or support). I know a Liverpudlian mum of six who is such a lovely, saintly and funny lady who homeschools. She would tell me how sometimes she would be running late and struggling - and this lady is truly one of the most wonderful Christians I have ever known.

Maybe you can explain to all your children that it is your new goal not to be late or miss Mass and have them all brainstorm ways to help as a family meet that goal. Getting everything ready the night before I’m sure helps. I won’t even pretend that I have ever had to get more than three kids out the door on Sunday mornings so you are an inspiration!

Wow 8 children, you are truly blessed!!! Think of mass as the most important part of your life. Ask the older kids to help with the younger ones. Wake up earlier. Make sacrifices. Make sure you don’t miss mass as it is a mortal sin if you do and you and your family will receive many graces for all of the efforts you make to get to mass on time each week and for participating.

I miss mass sometimes on a sunday-I do go very regularly- but I miss it sometimes because I have 8 children and we seem to sometimes just miss by being disorganised. I have never felt guilty (I would if I did it all the time) but after reading posts here I have realised it is a mortal sin. Am I right? Is it mortal? As a mum sometimes I feel that sundays are as busy, if not more, as any other day especially with my husband working away at the moment. So sometimes-not often we cant face up to the rush! Hope im not expressing this in a flippant manner.

There you are I have told the kids that it is over my dead body that we will miss Mass ever again as it is a mortal sin-they understood and very willing and very appreciative! I also miss Mass on christmas day (we go christmas eve) as I didnt know that it was mortal…I rarely miss mass but I think I had missed the point.thanks for the responses. Xx

We also go on Christmas Eve. We don’t go on Christmas Day.

Going the night before “counts.” You have met your obligation.

(There are requirements for it to count. But if you attended what your parish called Christmas Eve Mass, chances are great that you met your obligation.)
