Like other stories we have discussed here, some are quick to jump on board with whatever is published before all the facts are known if it suits their political persuation. In this story on Romney, as on others, we do not know the full facts of this incident yet some have said the most vicious things without having actual facts. I think that is disgusting and certainly not charitable.
For those who are seeking the high moral ground in pronouncing Romney as a bully unfit for public office, whatever happened to calumny and slander? Aren’t those sins?

Huge double standard. 😦

I didn’t think you would.
Are you claiming that asking for identification at the polls is somehow ant-Catholic? If so, I still don’t see the connection. Just trying to figure out what your point, if any, is. 🤷

I may have missed the story. Where did government agents shut down Catholic adoption services and services to abused women? I know that Alternatives to Abortion establishments here in Little Rock are functioning and Right to Life organizations here are also open for business.
You didn’t miss it. You just forgot that I told you in another thread that IL, MA, and DC were kicked out of the adoption business. And the USCCB’s contract helping victims of the sex slave industry with the US Govt was terminated because the USCCB didn’t refer victims to abortion clinics.

Maybe. I expect some slander back and forth. It’s an American tradition. Both sides are filling their muckbaskets in preparation of slinging mud and excrement at each other.

One needs only go back through past elections to see the attacks each side makes on its opponents.

Yes, I forgot. But, does the USCCB have to feed at the government trough? Is that not something that it could fund all by itself?

I think this a topic for another thread, but the Church and other churches may be getting too cozy with the government- regardless of the administration.

Your Church was not at the government trough as you so eloquently stated.

Following your beliefs is sometimes difficult. Thank God for our Bishops!

Err…Okay, not the Church, just the USCCB: “the USCCB’s contract helping victims of the sex slave industry with the US Govt was terminated.” Per Qui est ce. Was she wrong?

BTW,

The so-called victim of Romney’s “prank” was so terribly scarred, that he had this to say about Romney:

*…for Maxwell to relate the incident for the Auto Mag article. Auto Mag does, however, quote Maxwell giving crucial details notably missing from the Post piece: “’I’m a Democrat, so I won’t vote for him,’ says Maxwell. 'But he’d probably make a pretty good President. He’s very smart, very principled.’” *

Unbelievable but not surprising. I think the entire thing was a hit piece that was planned to be put out the day after Barack Obama’s proclaims his support of gay ‘marriage.’ Did Romney do pranks at school? Probably? Did the John Lauber incident happen as the Washington Post claimed? I am skeptical. Things are not adding up connected with Mitt say he can not remember the specific incident and John Lauber’s family not remembering incident with Mitt.

To summarize: two current articles based on interviews with some of the same former classmates. But they present two differing and largely inconsistent portraits, with Horowitz’s Washington Post either failing to investigate, or deliberately omitting, crucial and relevant information revealed by Murray in Automobile Magazine about Romney’s character in high school. It would seem that the Post’s investigative journalism standards leave much to be desired.

Fake story.

Washington Post wrote this story a year ago and released it this week when Obama announced he was for gay marriage. Now it appears they have horribly botched the story with fake interviews and fabricated quotes. But the damage is done to Romney. Didn’t hurt the Post though - people expect it from them.
I do not think damage is done to Romney. Only truth damages. The story is full of misinformation that it will probably help conservatives to coalesce around Romney because they see the liberal mainstream media try to tarnish his character.

So a contract to perform a job equates to feeding at a trough?

Do you feel that way about all government workers? Unions too?🤷

The Washington Post’s Romney hit piece comes apart
This was a colossally stupid move on the Post
’s part. How often do people have to be reminded that the Internet never forgets? That caches and screen grabs of dishonestly edited material rest comfortably in the hands of media watchdogs?

ABC mentions that some other, as yet nameless, classmates of Romney are eager to dish dirt on his teenage misbehavior, although no one seems ready to corroborate the Lauber hair hazing incident. That effort will misfire badly, and solidify support for Romney from a public sick unto death of attempts to distract from Barack Obama’s record in office.

They’re almost equally sick of journalistic double standards. They’ve been hearing for years that even the most reasonable inquiry into Obama’s shadowy past – even simple requests for ordinary documentation – are completely out of bounds, and can only be motivated by racial animosity. But now they’re supposed to sit still while a bunch of 60-year-olds are trotted out to reminisce about what a handful Mitt Romney was, during his school days in 1965? All because Obama hatchet man David Axelrod needs to spin a campaign narrative that plugs into the “gay marriage” and “bullying” crusade?

It’s really interesting the way the Washington Post chose to end their article, by noting that Romney received an alumni award just a year after John Lauber’s untimely death. You know what happened a year before Lauber lost his battle against liver cancer? A boat carrying a family of four, two friends, and the family’s dog sprang a leak on Lake Winnipesaukee, dumping them into the dark waters of early evening, and leaving them to howl in terror as other boats zipped around them. Mitt Romney and two of his sons happened to be vacationing in the area. They jumped onto jet skis and raced to the rescue. Governor Romney was pulled off his jet ski at one point. They even saved the dog, a Scottish terrier.

A couple of years before that, Romney performed a similar rescue for a group of kayakers who were shoved onto hard rocks by fierce winds.

In 1996, the fourteen-year-old daughter of a Bain Capital partner was kidnapped. When Mitt Romney learned of this, he shut down the entire multi-million dollar firm and flew the entire staff to New York, so they could help look for the girl. Romney hired private detectives, set up a toll-free tip line, coordinated with the NYPD, papered the streets with fliers, contacted every Bain customer in the city, and personally hit the bricks with the Bain crew to join the search. They found her, just in the nick of time – she was dying from an overdose of drugs in a New Jersey basement. She was only rescued because someone saw news coverage of Romney’s search efforts.

Thirty years earlier, Mitt Romney was a high school student who may, or may not, have been slightly more of a jerk than the average teenage boy. How’s that for an “evolution?” Why on Earth would any reasonable person think his high school misadventures tell us more about his character than his deeds later in life?

Oh, puleeze! How many priests have been dragged out of their rectories and shot to death in the street? How many bishops have been thrown into prison? How many churches have been burned down or desecrated? How many federal agents have spilled consecrated Hosts onto the sidewalk and stomped on them? How many Catholic schools have been shuttered and locked by federal agents?

You want oppression of the Church?? Look to China and the Spanish Civil War and to Soviet actions in Eastern Europe after WWII.

It’s almost enough to want to vote for Obama just to protest against the misrepresentations being put forward by the rightwing. 😦 😦
Do we have to let it get to that, or even close to it, Rich, before we are entitled to be concerned that Obama pushed his suit against the Lutheran Church and has remained steadfast in his determination to force Catholic institutions to pay for abortifacients, contraception and sterilizations against conscience?

What misrepresentations are you talking about? Obama did, in fact, have the EEOC sue the Lutherans in the Hosana Tabor case. Being a lawyer as you are, I am sure you know that went to the Supreme Court. What did that cost the Lutherans in money, time and anguish? And do you doubt for a minute that the Obama Justice Dept really intended to win its point?

And do you deny that Obama’s HHS Mandate requires many Catholic organizations to provide zero co-pay coverage for contaceptives, sterilizations and abortifacients, and that the bishops are trying to resist it on moral grounds? That’s just a fact.

And those are not the only instances. If a Repub did any of them, you would be apoplectic. As a lawyer, you would not hesitate to see a future threat in similar acts in other contexts, and have undoubtedly so argued out of conviction. The only “permanent injunction” available is Obama losing in November.

So, do we really have to wait until Obama arrests a bishop before we can be concerned about his attitude toward the Church and fear for what he will do in the future? Personally, I see no moral choice but to oppose the author of the oppressive acts he has already performed.

So a contract to perform a job equates to feeding at a trough?
REgarding the government: Is it government money? Is the contractor performing according with the contract it signed with the government agency? So, yes.
Do you feel that way about all government workers?
Yes. I work for the State of Arkansas, which pays me and tells me what to do in line with my job description. I do feed at its trough, as do government workers at any level do.

Then do so. Get rid of him, if you like. But, I see no organized oppression of the Catholic Church at work. That’s just too dramatic. 🤷

There is a very real reality that Catholic hospitals, clinics, charities etc. will have to shut down because of the HHS mandate, as Cardinal Wuerl has said. When such things have to happen because of the government that is oppression. The safety barrier for the poor will be gone but the Government will have left these Catholic institutions with no choice because they can not go against their conscience and they will not be able to pay fines.

I have heard of a Priest who said he is willing to go to prison over the HHS mandate. I have heard of the Bishops calling for civil disobedience.
