I want to preface in saying I do not consider myself racist, bigoted etc. etc. .

My question has to do with if the general consensus would be in being a sinful nature to expect my children to stay within their own race in dating/marriage. Personally I see it as we should try to continue our heritage as best as possible as I have not found reason for otherwise. I don’t know what to think anymore and would like some feedback that is charitable. It seems to me a mixing of cultures could be quite detrimental as would interfaith marriage could be.

anyone?😊

What is “detrimental” about a “mixing of cultures”?

Is it sinful to expect your children to marry within their race? I don’t know. But I do know that the Catechism is very clear that parents are not to “exert pressure” on their children regarding the choice of a spouse, and that adult children choose their spouses, not parents. Your children’s choice of a spouse is not up to you. When people marry, they form their own nuclear family and get to decide what parts or customs of their heritage they want to keep and which of their spouse’s they want to adopt, or forego. Also not up to you.

If your children are grown adults I think you should let them lead their lives. Your expectations of them are unrealistic.

I don’t agree that mixed race/culture marriage is wrong. I am in an interfaith marriage with an Anglican woman of Dutch heritage, and I’m a Catholic man of French-Canadian origin. There will always be moments of friction in a marriage regardless of race/faith. Yes there can be issues with cultural differences, but they are not any more insurmountable than other personal differences in a marriage.

Personally I find interacting with other cultures to be enriching. If any of my sons decided to marry a woman of another culture, I would be thrilled for them if they genuinely loved each other.

The world needs more intercultural exchanges, not less.

Seriously, what is with all these mixed race marriage questions popping up? Are there really that many racists trolling here?

I mentioned before in another “mixed race” thread that my parents are of different races. So how, pray tell, am I supposed to “stay within my own race in dating/marriage” if I myself am of mixed races? Am I not allowed to procreate? Please think twice about your question, especially as it relates to mixed race people.

There was a time that marrying an Italian, or a German, or an Irish was to cross the line.

In some areas, interracial marriage pretty much gets no notice; in others, it can be problematic for the couple, or one of them, because like it or not, there are racists among us. Some racism is mild, like you express: " Personally I see it as we should try to continue our heritage as best as possible as I have not found reason for otherwise.".

Heritage? As in, “We don’t marry that type”?

Some of it (and again, somewhat area-dependent) would likely not even cause a head to turn. For example, we have a large population in the US from Central and South America. Many are indigenous, others are partially indigenous and partially Spanish; others are pure Spanish. My roommate in grad school was from Peru and was partly indigenous and partly Japanese.

So a marriage between an Hispanic and a European background individual would not be particularly one to arose racist responses in many, if not most people. And in some areas, a marriage between a “white” and someone with an African heritage wouldn’t even be “noticed”. In other areas, particularly where the African American population is small, it would be more noticed. The issue then is, to what extent it would be problematic with others, and how is the couple going to deal with it? And that question includes how the grandparents are going to react… particularly since it may not be part of their “heritage”…

I just want to point out that this person’s username is “blackshirtproud.” “Blackshirt” is and was a nickname for various fascist groups.

I see nothing wrong with wanting your children to carry on the family race/culture. It’s the way it’s been for millennia, and it’s the reason why we have different races, ethnicities, nationalities, religions and cultures. All these differences make the world interesting.

I like my ethnicity and culture and I would not like to see it bred away for the sake of political correctness or any other reason. But when your kids are grown, as in everything, they will decide for themselves.

I come from a mixed background. May I ask you what your name “blackshirtproud” refers to? “Black Shirt” has an unfortunate association with fascism.

I’ve seen families really try to instill their language and culture in their children but have kicked Jesus and Catholicism out to the curb.

The salvation of Christ and His Church trumps all languages and cultures. Pray for that.

In spite of the strong possibility that we are being trolled, I will offer a serious reply.

My first encounter with inter-racial (a term that I despise) marriages was while I was serving in the Air Force, and what I noticed was that the children of those marriages were usually better looking and, dare I say it, smarter than either of the parents. A few years later, while still overseas, I was taking an upper-level sociology course, and I asked the professor about that. He promptly answered that the reason for that was “hybrid vigor,” now called “heterosis.”

Those who want the mind-numbing full explanation can visit the Wiki article here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_vigor . The short explanation is that when the parents are from the same or closely related gene pools, there is a higher chance of matching lethal or harmful recessive genes, which means higher chances of negative traits in the offspring (thus the prohibition against incest). However, when the parents are from different gene pools, the harmful recessives are different, and there is less chance of reinforcement. Thence – prettier, smarter, healthier kids.

Sometimes it seems from the Old Testament that God wanted the Israelites to have it in for other races – “Kill all the Canaanites, no descendant of a Moabite can enter the congregation to the 10th generation,” etc. However, the discrimination was not race-based, but faith-based. Thus Rahab, a Canaanite, was not only allowed to survive; she married a leader of the tribe of Judah and became an ancestress of both the Davidic royal line and the Messiah. Likewise, David, only three generations removed from his Moabite ancestress, was not only allowed into the congregation; he became king.

Frequently we can determine the will of God by what happens in nature. For example, it is not God’s plan that there be a cross between daffodils and oak trees, and any attempt to make such a hybrid would fail. Dogs cannot cross-breed with cats. Within humanity, God’s will, expressed in both testaments, is that believers marry within the faith, and we see that mixed-faith marriages, or marriages between believers and complete non-believers, have problems. However, marriages between humans from different gene pools produce superior children (I’m beginning to sound like a eugenist :bigyikes:). That, to me, speaks volumes.

OP, if yours was a serious request, I would advise that you stay out of your children’s private choices.

You can expect your children to marry within their own race but they are also free to disregard your wishes. How would you know if someone is of a pure race anyway? Do you demand a copy of their “papers”, like what you would expect of a purebred dog? 🤷

You can’t say “I do not consider myself racist, bigoted etc. etc” and then say racist, bigoted things. Make up your mind.

The smartest dogs are mutts, and the most screwed up health-wise dogs are purebreds. The same may go for humans. This is just a thought, so don’t go crazy on it.

I recently took a mixed race nephew camping for his first time, and he was surprisingly agile climbing rocks, and cliffs, and he had nary a complaint the whole time. He did get a bit scared at night because he is a city kid and never saw night so dark, and with all the night noises in the woods, yet he slept deeply and awoke happy and energetic.

To begin, I will say for those accusing me of being a fascist. I understand Mosulinni (sp) had a faction called blackshirts. I can assure you that is no my namesake. Feel free to google Husker Cornhusker football and you will find the name is for the starting defense due to jersey color.
Now with that aside. I do believe it is up to me as a parent to approve or disapprove of relationships of my kids. There will always be a epitome to most rules though. I cherish other cultures and that is what I intend to preserve for the most part. I posted this to see if there was any scriptural positions on this and not be attacked by a few responding with emotions and opinion.

After reading some more responses, I am really taken back by the responses of some with name calling etc. . In the op it did not have any mention of children being of mix race being bad. The question had to do with culture and many have turned it otherwise.

We have different races and cultures due to tribes of people a long time ago splitting off from each other and adapted to their new environments (e.g. skin pigment). When a couple of different races decide to get married I view it as a beautiful thing as two people who’s families belonged to different tribes of people who split apart from each other have been reunited after a very long time. I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Whoops—sorry about that! It’s just that when someone under a username that is often associated with fascists starts a thread with, “I’m not racist, but…” then it’s usually a good bet that the fascist reference is indeed an intentional fascist reference.

Really? Because basically nothing in your original post seems to indicate that.

Nope, no questions asking for scriptural support against race-mixing. Also, no indication that you were going to prohibit all of those who disagree with you from responding. Not that you could, anyway.
