Modest Church attire for girls

Hi I am new to this forum and would welcome any advice on where to find affordable modest attire for my daughter’s First Communion and weekly Mass.
She is 11 and is too tall for nearly every dress I have found which has sleeves, a modest neckline and appropriate length.
I realize that I am going to have to make her First Communion dress. Unfortunately, this does not solve my weekly problem. Dresses made for little girls and tweets are above the knee and sometimes too revealing or flashy for Mass.
Does anyone know of an on-line store which sells modest dresses for older girls and women, that are reasonably priced?

I don’t know about online, but we encountered exactly the same issue with our daughter. As we live in TX, all the fancy white dresses available in conventional stores were sleeveless.

We discovered that there was, however, a treasure trove of appropriate dresses available at a dress shop in a Hispanic neighborhood.

Thank you for reassuring me that I am not alone! Ironically, we moved to New Orleams from Houston, Tx. I thought of all places this traditionally Catholic city would have plenty of places with appropriate dresses.
My mother is from Mexico and we were always able to find something appropriate in the Hispanic neighborhoods. Unfortunately, we are not sure if such a place exist anywhere nearby. (We can’t even find a semi-authentic Mexican restaurant)

I am coming to the conclusion that I should just start a business making modest church dresses.

If I do come across a good online store, I will definitely share!

That is not a good sign.
 
I don’t know how this fits with the weather there, but around here girls very commonly wear a white cardigan with their First Communion dresses.
 
I am honestly shocked that even Catholic apparel stores on-line feature dresses which are inappropriate (IMO) for an adult to wear to Mass.
One site even tagged dresses as “Sexy Communion Dress!”

We love our Church and the priests have mentioned to my husband and thanked me for dressing our family modestly. It is worth the effort, I just wish it wasn’t such a challenge.
 
I did some looking around at a catalog that had had some promising dresses and my eyes are bugging out:

That’s $268, plus $56 for the organza jacket.

It might be a good idea to buy an inexpensive sleeveless dress you like and then sew an organza (or similar) jacket to go with it.

Depending on what you’re looking for, have you tried department stores?

I have rather a while before this is an issue for DD (2 years old right now), but I do remember last year going to JCPenney’s at about this time and seeing a fair number of First Communion dresses with short or elbow sleeves and non-problematic necklines. Sizes ranged up to a 10/12, I want to say.

You might also try looking a) on Etsy (there are several stores there which specialize in this sort of thing) and b) for a modest junior bridesmaid’s or, if she’s really tall and has started to develop, a modest bridesmaid’s dress in white. Also, a strapless or sleeveless dress can often, depending on the neckline, be made church-appropriate with the addition of, say, a pretty, short-sleeved bolero-style jacket.

Lastly, the modest wedding industry is really big in Mormon circles; you might try looking on websites geared more towards Mormon weddings if you’re thinking modest bridesmaid/junior bridesmaid.

This is exactly what I have done many times. However, our church is well over 100 years old and the air conditioning is not very effective in this hot southern climate.

So a jacket or sweater can work, but it is equally as difficult to find a dress which falls below her knees. Partly because she has long legs.
 
Oh, and as modest wedding garb has become a bit commoner, the bigger bridal stores will often carry shrugs or short-sleeved jackets in a variety of colors, including white. A number of churches have begun to put the kibosh on strapless gowns during the ceremony, so it’s become not uncommon for both brides and maids to get some sort of wrap or jacket to go over a dress for the ceremony. Accordingly, bridal shops carry 'em.

I have found some on that website, just not any in her size. I do think that I am going to use the organza from her babtismal gown for sleeves and an age appropriate chapel veil.

We got our daughters’ dresses on etsy. You can search flower girl dresses and communion dresses. Our girls are super tiny so we had them made.

Not to change the subject-why did this thread get 1 star -that means terrible, right? This happens a lot lately on regular threads…don’t posters know the star ratings?
