Modesty?

As a teen, I don’t think I fully realized what I was doing or saying by some of the clothes I wore. It just seemed normal at the time. By today’s standards, there wasn’s much I wore that was really immodest but I did get into the short skirts and tighter tops. It wasn’t until college I fully realized more about how men think and how I could be pulling them down. And really thought about how being a temple of the Holy Spirit should affect my clothing choices. Modesty is something we need to educate young women in early and often, and men in modesty of the eyes.

well I just wanted to mention that I had a strapless dress at my wedding with a shawl that draped over my upper arms and elbows most of the time and I got tons of compliments on how elegant the dress was. I think there’s a big difference between showing your arms and showing your belly button. 😛

It’s all the “peer pressure” and stupid junk like that. I hate it when people dress immodestly anywhere let alone mass. My parents are constantly telling me & my sisters how important it is to dress modestly at all times, but especially at mass. I don’t think I’ve ever worn jeans to mass…😃 I think it’s important to dress appropriately for the occasion. And to be modest at all times…
Sarah, you hit it right on the nail… Parents need to be involved. There is no way my daughter would dress like that in church.

Celia,

Although I’m sure you did look elegant and beautiful in your strapless dress, however, whether people say you look nice or not doesn’t make what you were wearing appropriate. What matters is whether it causes men to think lustful thoughts because you show your naked upper chest and shoulders – the answer of course is yes! Honestly, where are your eyes…even as a woman…drawn when you see someone wearing a strapless top?

I remember once a female EMHC at Holy Mass was wearing a strapless top and when she walked in front of the ambo she looked naked. Wonder what the boys and men were thinking? Even I was distracted and I am not sexually attracted to woman.

Anyway, my point is that this is the faulty reasoning of women who dress immodestly – if people say I look attractive in what I’m wearing then, therefore, it is appropriate and modest. Wrong way to measure modesty! Better to ask a guy what is sexually provaocative to males and get advice from modest women.

Our Mass coordinator did a huge write up on modest dress. It worked for a short time, then out came the super tight jeans and revealing tops.

An 18 year old girl was serving as EMHC for the first time one Sunday, right next to Father. She wore extra tight, low riding jeans and had on a top to short to tuck in, showing her belly.
Father never missed a beat, (he is a super priest) but after Mass was over, we all saw him talking with this young lady. The next time she served, she was FULLY covered, wearing a very Modest dress. 👍

I believe the priest should say something in the announcements at the conclusion of Mass concerning proper attire while at Mass, instead of telling just select people and expecting it to filter down.
