Pl. tell me your personal opinion
(without the impression u got from anti - Islamic sites )-- if Prophet had lust for Zainab , why he did not marry her before arranging her marriage ?
I did not say Mohammad lusted for Zainab. Please read my earlier threads. Your questions have been addressed there.

I don’t totally rely on the so-called anti-Islamic sites and that’s why I bring this subject for discussion here to hear the other side’s view.

…I don’t totally rely on the so-called anti-Islamic sites
but it looks like u believed in all the misconception against Prophet . Such as he entered in her room & saw her totally naked & then he had lust for her ; so her husband divorced her etc etc.

U did not think logically that Zainab was his cousin & it’s hard to believe that he never saw her etc.

I am still curious about this and hope to get more insight into it.

My first curiousity – how is that Mohammad happened to be in Zainab chamber and saw her naked? I mean don’t you knock first or at least, “knock, knock, anybody there?”.

**“The Messenger of God went out one day seeking him. On Zaid’s door was a curtain, which the wind moved to show her unveiled in her chamber. The heart of the Prophet was stricken by admiration for her” (Annals of al-Tabari, 2:453).
"The Messenger of God saw her after he married her off, and he was deeply moved by her. Then he said, “Praise be to Him, who changes the hearts!” (al-Tabari -commentary, 22:12; al-Kashshaf, 2:359)***
Perhaps there was not even any door at all.

Zainab was cousin of the Prophet (p). He arranged her marriage with Zaid. It’s unbelievable that Prophet never saw his own cousin since childhood since command on hijab came much later.

Muslims are allowed but not even encouraged to be naked even in bathroom. It’s simply impossible that a Muslim woman can be naked in a place where she can be seen by other men.

If Prophet had lust ( as some alleged ) for her , he could marry her before her marriage & divorce.

The meaning of unveiled is naked ? It could be she was just without head covering as it was not a must at that time. Anyway , if u love someone , why u will arrange her marriage ?
Don’t you know that a woman half naked is more “inviting” compared to a fully naked woman?

again , this is the interpretation of al tabari based on weak hadeeth. And again this story has no base.
Can you bring one authentic source for any Suni cleric on this earth who rejects Altabri & Alqurtubi commentaries!. Here in Saudi Arabia those two authentic commentaries are being taught to children in their schools and mosques, and they are part of our education system.

تفسير الطبري:

This is being rejected by Muslim posters here and I’ll take their words for it.
Altabri & Alqurtubi commentaries are the top authentic sources for Quran commentary, if someone claim something against them, then he/she should provide the authentic reference for that NOT an opinion.😉

Thanks Sam for the information. If the comentaries are taught in schools in Saudi Arabia then it should be reliable enough. I don’t know, sometimes I feel I am being made a fool perhaps due to my ignorance in things Islamic. Anyway some of my questions have not be answered here and maybe those are difficult questions.

How is that misconception? So far none of you can say with certainty that Mohammad did NOT see her unveiled / improperly dressed. That he was in her house and caught her in that demeanour. I was asking why he was there and being such a supposedly good person shouldn’t you think he should have knocked first? Granted it might be a tent, then shouldn’t you think he should have called first?

Today if a Muslim man is found in a house of a Muslim woman uninvited and alone with her, don’t you think it’s a cause for concerned? And was not this incidence the prelude for their marriage?

Meedo said Mohammad did not want this marriage nor he desired her. How do you expect me to believe that especially when revelations allowing Mohammad to do so and to have more than four wives started to come after Khadijah’s death? How is that Mohammad began to practice polygamy and having concubines after her death and not before?

Thanks for the confirmation. Was cousins allowed to get married in the tribe before the revelation of verse 33:50 ?

My earlier question was : why was Mohammad in Zainab’s house and chanced upon her alone perhaps improperly dressed?
Reuben, you are continuing the discussion without any necessity. When matter is explained to you, that should be enough for your knowledge. It appears that you had a mission in starting this thread and you do not want to learn anything. Rather you want to spread disease.
  1. It is cleat that the prophet had seen zainab many times. The story of that Hadith (Prophet seeing zainab) is quite wrong.
  2. The prophet had no desire for Zainab. He had himself married zainab with Zaid.
  3. The Quranic verse is very clear that the Messenger of God (Muhammad) told Zaid to keep his wife, not to divorce her.
  4. The prophet told zaid to keep his wife and to fear Allah. That is very clear that Muhammad told zaid to do his best to retain his wife zainab.
  5. But Zainab was not happy with Zaid. She was bent upon breaking the marriage. It was not Zaid who was getting rid of her, nor it was the prophet who was interested in zainab.
  6. All these matters are clear from the verse of the Quran (will be posted here again as a reminder).
  7. Zaid could not control the situation and he divorced zainab of his own accord, own will and it was against the will of the prophet Muhammad. All these things are clear from the verse. We do not need to indulge into any hadith for such things when the matter is present in the Quran.
Hadith cannot take charge of the Quran and cannot override the teachings of the Quran.
  1. Zaid divorced Zainab. The marriage was ended. Zaid and zainab were both free to marry any one. (against church theory).
  2. Prophet did not intend to marry Zainab even when directed by Allah. But felt that the christians will raise hue and cry later about that marriage. So the prophet hesitated in going ahead with that marriage, in a way feared abuse from the christians. That fear was even when he was directed by Allah to marry Zainab.
  3. Allah told the prophet not to be afraid of any one but rather fear Allah.
  4. Allah ordered the messenger Muhammad to go ahead with the marriage to Zainab who was really a cousin of the prophet. That was the real relation of the prophet. The relation of zaid with the prophet was only a secondary, supposed relation i.e. adoption.
Allah ordered the prophet to go ahead with the marriage and not be afraid of any one. So the prophet married Zainab, not out of any desire for her but because of Allah’s command and because the world ( specially the christians) needed some good lessons:

Lesson 1. That the adoption is not any real relation. Also the idea of the church that Jesus was the begotten son of God was also false idea. There is no father/son relation except the real father/son relation. The other made up relations are all false.

Lesson 2. That divorce is valid. At times it becomes necessary and the church belief that there is not to be any divorce is false belief. That is the un-natural belief of the church. Not true and good at all.

To teach the christians a lesson, it was necessary, by God’s will that a person should divorce his wife. And that the prophet should marry a free divorced lady. That also to teach the christians that it is okay to marry a divorced person. It is not a sin at all, as all the world can see now.

Now I post that verse of the Quran below: Please read:

“33.37”: And when you said to him to whom Allah had shown favor and to whom you had shown a favor: Keep your wife to yourself and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; and you concealed in your soul what Allah would bring to light, and you feared men, and Allah had a greater right that you should fear Him. But when Zaid had accomplished his want of her, We gave her to you as a wife, so that there should be no difficulty for the believers in respect of the wives of their adopted sons, when they have accomplished their want of them; and Allah’s command shall be performed.

Do you have any scriptural reference that Zaynab was not satisfied with Zaid? I mean there is hadeeth that says differently so do you have any other refence to support this?

I can accept the ‘official’ reason for Mohammad to marry Zainab though certain aspect of it is surely not very convincing to me.
There aren’t any hadeeth that say differently. Authentic references to the marriage of Muhammad and Zaynab bint Jahsh:

“So when Zayd had accomplished his desire from her (i.e. divorced her), We gave her to you in marriage, so that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the believers in respect of (the marriage of) the wives of their adopted sons when the latter have no desire to keep them (i.e. they have divorced them)”

[al-Ahzaab 33:37]

She used to boast about this to the other wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), saying: “Your families arranged your marriages but Allaah arranged my marriage from above the seven heavens.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 7420.

And for the record, the tafsir of At-Tabari, and the tafsir of Al-Qurtubi are excellent resources to learn about the Qur’an.

But no tafsir is absolutely 100% authoritative, and sometimes the stories reported have not been authenticated.

Where do Ibn Jarir al-Tabari (d. 310/923) and Ibn Sa’d claim to be the sources of the so-called ‘Satanic verses’? It is precisely the opposite. They have only transmitted the story as it was transmitted to them. Al-Tabari mentions the so-called ‘Satanic verses’ story[2] in his Tarikh as well as an important set of statements in the introduction of his book, which states:

Let him who examines this book of mine know that I have relied, as regards everything I mention therein which I stipulate to be described by me, solely upon what has been transmitted to me by way of reports which I cite therein and traditions which I ascribe to their narrators, to the exclusion of what may be apprehended by rational argument or deduced by the human mind, except in very few cases. This is because knowledge of the reports of men of the past and of contemporaneous views of men of the present do not reach the one who has not witnessed them nor lived in their times except through the accounts of reporters and the transmission of transmitters, to the exclusion of rational deduction and mental inference. Hence, if I mention in this book a report about some men of the past, which the reader of listener finds objectionable or worthy of censure because he can see no aspect of truth nor any factual substance therein, let him know that this is not to be attributed to us but to those who transmitted it to us and we have merely passed this on as it has been passed on to us.[3]

Yes , i quoted Al Tabari himself in the post above he himself acknowledged he doesnt go through what he puts in his exgeses . Read , it is in arabic and it is translated in English as well.

You make it sound to the not knwoeledgable people here as if it is a novelty. It is well known among Muslim scholars tha not all tafseers are 100% authenticated . Even tafseer Ibn Katheer is not 100% authenticated. What is taught in Mosques and schools is the authenticated portions that acholars of hadeeth were able to find an established link to the source and made sure the source had heared it from the intended sayer by means of corroborating with other chains of narrations.

if we are arguing fopr the sake of arguing then it wiont end . The history is clear . and he reasons for marriage is mentioned in teh Quran.

Reuben, you are continuing the discussion without any necessity. When matter is explained to you, that should be enough for your knowledge. It appears that you had a mission in starting this thread and you do not want to learn anything. Rather you want to spread disease.
Planten, you know that I have been dialoging with you Muslims here for a very long time. How much of Islam you want me to know? Most of the general information about it I knew already, of course by courtesy of you guys. If I want to go deeper into this subject it is because I thought there is more to it that my curiosity demands.

You are making an accusation by your following lines. If that the case as you say it is, then all of you have a mission and want to spread disease about Christianity here. Is it fair to say that?
  1. It is cleat that the prophet had seen zainab many times. The story of that Hadith (Prophet seeing zainab) is quite wrong.
I did not dispute that Mohammad did not see Zainab before. However, many Muslims themselves believe the story that you say is wrong.
  1. The prophet had no desire for Zainab. He had himself married zainab with Zaid.
This does not prove anything at all. The fact that he married Zainab to Zaid earlier on had nothing to do with anything. He had a change of heart later perhaps after seeing Zainab as a mature desirable woman. At what age was Zainab when he married her to Zaid? Most probably a young girl as a custom among his tribe then and being his relative (a cousin) she would mean nothing to him sexually.
  1. The Quranic verse is very clear that the Messenger of God (Muhammad) told Zaid to keep his wife, not to divorce her.
Please give me that verse. This is strange after asking Zaid to keep her wife then only to marry her later.
  1. The prophet told zaid to keep his wife and to fear Allah. That is very clear that Muhammad told zaid to do his best to retain his wife zainab.
Please give me the verse.
  1. But Zainab was not happy with Zaid. She was bent upon breaking the marriage. It was not Zaid who was getting rid of her, nor it was the prophet who was interested in zainab.
Then Mohammad’s judgment was very poor indeed as he was the one who arranged this marriage. Could it be that Zainab was eyeing the prophet herself and that affected him his heart somehow?
  1. All these matters are clear from the verse of the Quran (will be posted here again as a reminder).
Thanks.
As you can see, I have no problem with this.
  1. Zaid divorced Zainab. The marriage was ended. Zaid and zainab were both free to marry any one. (against church theory).
OK noted.

Now where did you get the idea of Christians’ interference here? Since when the opinion of Christians became very important to Mohammad that he had to receive new revelation and to practice / ACTUALIZE this revelation by marrying the woman he did not want?
  1. Allah told the prophet not to be afraid of any one but rather fear Allah.
How is this relevant to his marriage to Zainab? You said he was afraid that Christians would question the marriage (that he did not want in the first place). So why on earth he wanted to marry this woman?
  1. Allah ordered the messenger Muhammad to go ahead with the marriage to Zainab who was really a cousin of the prophet. That was the real relation of the prophet. The relation of zaid with the prophet was only a secondary, supposed relation i.e. adoption.
First of all I think it kinda creaky that you need a revelation for Mohammad to marry his cousin. You can have a revelation, an instruction or a teaching that says one can marry his cousin, but did Mohammad have to really carry this out in practice?

I don’t care about the topic of adoption. My only comment was when a person want to adopt a son at least it must be done in all sincerity. Adopted or not, he is a son and the father has to function as a father otherwise there is no point in adopting and more over it would be very cruel to the adopted son.

You really have to prove that the Christians and their churches had become an equation here. Many Muslims that I heard tried to disassociate Mohammad with Christians and here you came with this fresh air about Christians in the life of Mohammad.
Lesson 2. That divorce is valid. At times it becomes necessary and the church belief that there is not to be any divorce is false belief. That is the un-natural belief of the church. Not true and good at all.
Yes, you have to prove this. When did the church became a factor with the revelations? But I am interested to know and also I think Christian posters here. 🙂
To teach the christians a lesson, it was necessary, by God’s will that a person should divorce his wife. And that the prophet should marry a free divorced lady. That also to teach the christians that it is okay to marry a divorced person. It is not a sin at all, as all the world can see now.
Oh beautiful! Islam teaches Christians. Listen to this.

I have another verse about three verses away from this. Maybe you’d like to comment on that too.

Thanks. So the authentic commentary is al-Ahzaab and there is no hadeeth. I know that there are other Muslims who disagree with you and that the hadeeth saying Mohammad saw Zainab unveiling in her chamber is being used and referred to widely.

Then he said, “Praise be to Him, who changes the hearts!” (al-Tabari -commentary, 22:12; al-Kashshaf, 2:359)**

In any case, what you are presenting here is that Mohammad married Zainab just to prove a teaching – that it is alright to marry your adopted son’s wife after she is divorced. That it is alright to divorce and marry a divorcee. Case closed.

Unless you’re a Muslim, and even if you are, it’s difficult to accept this is fair and justified to Mohammad and Zainab. Marriage is certainly about fairness and willingness. However if Muslims are to follow the example of Mohammad then marriage is about convenience and necessity. If this is what Islam wants to promote about marriage so be it and I hope no Muslims will object when I bring this subject in any discussion on appropriate subject later on.

What makes it not so right and thus my curiosity and question about Mohammad in all this are as follow:

Mohammad did not have multiple wives and concubine as long as Khadijah was alive.

Khadijah was about twice Mohammad’s age when he married her. About all of Mohammad’s youth was spent in his marriage to Khadijah. He was ‘faithful’ to her alone and there was no duplicity on his part and the marriage was monogamous.

After Khadijah’s death and Mohammad position was established in the clan and he was a respected prophet, his preference began to change. No more it was monogamy but multitude of women for him whether by attraction or not but Mohammad was married to more than the one woman that his marriage to Khadijah signified.

Then you had the Quranic verses ‘of what your right hand possessed’. An interesting idea for me as a non-Muslim was his attraction to younger women which was demonstrated after the Khadijah era. I do not agree that Mohammad disliked Zainab. Like I said I know that many Muslims share this idea too. Mohammad DID like her for whatever reason but it was enough for him to marry her.

The contention put by Muslims here is that if Mohammad wanted Zainab to be his wife he would not have given her to Zaid. This is all assumption. But we can also assume that when Zainab was given to Zaid in marriage she was a young girl and being his cousin most probably he did not even look at her. It was another thing altogether after she was married and became a woman that exuded sexuality. She was his right hand possession so why not take her for himself?

Later the marriage to Aishah most probably at similar age. But I am sure he was wiser now, a young girl may mean nothing but when she grew up, it was another proposition altogether. So why not go for her now? Of course all this is my assumption but the fact remains that he was monogamous during his youth but polygamous thereafter.

Another question. Why did Muhammad care to any idea from the Christian? Did Zaenab was a Christian???

in his Tarikh as well as an important set of statements in the introduction of his book, which states:
Yes , i quoted Al Tabari himself in the post above he himself acknowledged he doesnt go through what he puts in his exgeses . Read , it is in arabic and it is translated in English as well.
Sorry but that is a “disclosure” by him not a “Suni cleric who rejects Altabri & Alqurtubi commentaries”, besides that dosn’t degrade any authenticity of his book.

Moreover, that Muhammed & Zainab story is mentioned in at least 5 historical books, and Altabari is just one of them:

1) Altabari commentary:

2) Alqurtubi commentary:

3) Musnad Ahmed:

**The net result was good.

1.There was clear allowance for divorce in Islam (against the church teachings)
  1. It was assured that a son is a real son only, not any adopted or supposedly begotten son.
  2. It was proved that any person can remarry after divorce and the divorced lady can also re-marry any man. (Another good advancement against the church teachings).
The more you discuss this matter on the basis of a false report (Tabari) and the more you ignore the words of the Quran itself on this subject (wjich had been presented here a few times), the more problems for the Catholics will become evident. For instance:

The Catholic belief that there cannot be any divorce. Our book Quran is explicit on this subject that divorce is permitted under grave circumstances…

The Catholic belief that there can be sons other than actual real sons is also proved wrong. The world needed to come out of that misunderstanding of supposed sons.

The remarraige issue was also a problem for the Catholics. It did not allow remarriage and considered that as adultry. That proved wrong by the incident of the marriage of the prophet to a divorced lady (zainab).

So this subject has solved many problems of the world which were mostly caused (created) by the Catholic teachings.**
