Mohawk Tekakwitha to be Canada’s first aboriginal saint
A Mohawk Catholic mystic who died more than 330 years ago is set to become Canada’s first aboriginal saint.
Pope Benedict XVI has officially recognized a miracle performed by Kateri Tekakwitha, clearing the final hurdle in her path to canonization, the Vatican announced Monday.
After her death, numerous miracles were attributed to her intercession. Her crucifix, pieces of her clothing and dirt from her grave were rumoured to have healing powers.
According to eyewitnesses, including two Jesuit priests and many Mohawks, her scarred face became beautiful when she died.

That’s awesome!! Yay for our first aboriginal saint!! :bible1:🍰

What wonderful news. :extrahappy:

Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Pray for all of us. Amen.

Oh how cool! I have heard about her before. I don’t know hardly anything about her but I have seen a picture of what she was supposed to look like and I have heard her name and that she is currently a Blessed Tekakwitha. That said, Blessed/Saint Tekakwitha, pray for us! Amen.

This is wonderful news. If I am ever confirmed, I’ve been hoping to have her as my confirmation saint, but wasn’t sure if a Blessed could be used as a confirmation saint. Looks like I won’t have to worry about that now. I hope that she will be canonized soon.

Blessed Kateri, pray for us.

She will also be the newest Saint for New York State, too.

Don’t forget that she was spent the first twenty years of her life in the Mohawk River Valley of New York…which happens to be where I live!

She was only in Canada for the last four years…but we New Yorkers can certainly share her with our brethren across the border! I’m sure she won’t mind! 😃

One of my granddaughters is named “Lily Kateri”. She will be pleased to know this.

Beautiful news. Praise be to God.
I’ve heard about her several times with her body resting in a small shrine on aboriginal reservation south of Montreal that encompasses part of the province of Quebec, Cornwall, Ontario and Upper State New York.

I guess I was somewhat confused as to her nationality.
This link here says she was born American conservation.catholic.org/kateri.htm
She was born in 1656. New York didn’t properly exist as a colony until some of it was conquered by the English in 1664.

At the time, that would have been either Dutch territory of the colony of New Netherlands or perhaps it was still Mohawk territory.

Either way, I think it’s more appropriate to refer to her as a Mohawk. Not an American or Canadian.

I can see your point here. When you look at the time period neither United States or Canada were officially countries. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680)

To me she is not a “Saint” just for the Canadians, Americans, the Mohawks, and so forth but a “Saint” for all.

I learnt about Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha when I was a child (First Communion) from a book called “Book of Saints, part 2” by Fr. Lawerence G. Lovasik ← I still have this book to this day.

Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Pray for us. Amen.
