Hi guys, I’m in a tough situation. I’m a devout Catholic, but my mom has strayed from the faith for a number of years and is engaged and will have a wedding with her lesbian lover in two weeks. I had originally said I would go because I thought it would be honorable to obey her request for me to come, but I’ve realized that if I go, that means that I support it. I don’t support it. My family now is saying I should be ashamed of myself, and that after all my mom has done for me, I should go to support her. Any thoughts? My mom has only communicated with me via text since I told her yesterday in person that I wasn’t going, and she’s devastated.

Love your mother and go to her wedding; it doesn’t mean you approve, it just shows that you love her. You have this once chance - you’ll never have it back.

if I go, that means that I support it.
Not really. It means that you support HER.
I should go to support her.
I would agree with them, but the choice is yours, as are the consequences.
she’s devastated.
What did you expect?

I see no problem with attending and wishing your mom all the best in life. It’s an act of charity. And gratitude.

And I see no need to bug your priest about this. He has bigger fish to fry than this.

One more thing. No silly antics. No juvenile pouting or snide self-righteous remarks. Have fun, and make sure everyone else is having fun, too. In other words, be a gentleman.

Have a great time!

I’m sorry, but that is what your priest is for. The OP is clearly troubled and is looking for help. I know I’d want advice from a priest with something as hard as this.

No, it isn’t. The priest has much more important things to attend to than this. This kid’s troubled only because he made himself troubled. He made a mountain out of a molehill. Or an anthill.

This isn’t theological rocket surgery. It’s a matter of plain simple basic decorum.

I disagree. Pastors are supposed to lead and guide their flock. That includes when someone is facing a tough moral decision. And it is also a theological decision due to the Church’s position on SSM.

There is no “tough moral position” here. The priest has much more important things to do than deal with matters like this. They are not here to help us with every single little problem we encounter in life.

Whether or not to attend ones own mother’s wedding is no little thing. But I will not derail this thread arguing that point wiht you. I stand by the advice I - and several others - have given. OP, talk to your pastor on this one.

I can’t help but wonder why the LGBTQ folk always seem surprised when devout Catholics don’t want to play along…

I don’t believe you’re correct in your assessment. Fr. Simon of Relevant Radio has answered this many times. He has said going to same-sex ‘marriage’ is approving of it. His suggestion is to be very kind and say that you hope the person can respect your conscience and belief that a marriage is between one man and one woman. Tell them you still love them and will attend the reception as you are still there to support them.

He’s entitled to his opinion. But I think it’s wrong. It sounds very priggish. Sorry, but never in the last 2000 years has priggish behavior led anyone to our Lord.
