Just wondering, if a priest blesses a Monastery Icon, it’s all okay, right? I mean, minus the fact that its purchase supported a New Age sect et al. Like, its spiritually harming qualities are negated, right?

Well an icon is supposed to convey correct theology. All the aspects of it should. I don’t know if Monastery Icons would. But assuming they just copy an icon, the I guess thats okay. But if the icon is something they write, there could be something there amiss.

They have a very shady history, I wouldn’t support them financially.
There are a few of their pictures in my house but I didn’t buy them…

I guess if a priest blessed them that would make them sacramentals.

My priest told me that he has heard stories of demons coming out of Monastery Icons. He refuses to have any in the church, save one which was given to him as a gift.

That doesn’t make any sense. If they were demonic, what difference would it make if it was given as a gift?

I don’t know his reasoning, that’s what he told me. He himself hasn’t seen demons come out of his own icon.

As a side, I was looking at my TAN Books St. Raphael prayer book the other day, and the icon of the Archangel Raphael on the front cover is an icon from Monastery Icons. I wonder if TAN Books knows about this.

I would consider the fact that you’re financially supporting a heretical organization rather than a legitimate Christian one such as a monastery by purchasing from them. Many monasteries support themselves on their icon sales, and your money would be much better spent buying from one of them.

Does anyone know where to get an Icon Set of the Stations of the Cross then? I know its a latinization and blah blah blah. I like the Stations, and I think the spiritual reality of an icon helps me to meditate and “be there” more than just an artistic representation.

In addition, they aren’t really “icons” are they, as they break some fundamental iconographic rules.

What was telling to me was that their site was selling prayer beads which I recognized as being the same as used by Hindu and Buddhist monks.

We should also remember that Hinduism does accept and worship Christ . . . but as the 9th avatar/incarnation of Vishnu . . .

I have several of their icons-and I’m not going to get rid of them!

The question hasn’t been answered then: what’s wrong with Monastery Icons?

They aren’t icons to begin with (pictures, really) and they come from a syncretistic religious tradition that invokes pagan deities as they are made. An icon, like anything spiritual that we produce, comes from a religious tradition whose doctrines are reflected in the icon.

This is why iconographers of the Christian East, to be successful, are very spiritual, pray a lot, attend Church services, ponder the Scriptures and even have their paints, brushes and other instruments blessed by the Church before they begin their work. This is also why there are iconographers, like St Andrei Rubleev, who are canonized saints - their sanctity is communicated to us through their iconography and ALL of Rubleev’s icons have been declared miraculous by the Church.

However, if you have some of these pictures and they are blessed, that is fine.

O wow i did not know this thanks, for the info! I never bought anything from them but have browsed their site a few times. Good thing i didnt buy anything.

I was only wondering because I have some that were given to me as gifts. Thanks guys!

It’s unfortunate cause a lot of Christians will be them, especially since they include western saints. But there are numerous Orthodox and Catholic Iconographers that have and will write western saints in an icon. It’s just a bit harder to track them down.

Little Boy Lost,

Do you know of anyone in Colorado who will do Icons on comission?

I ordered a bunch of stuff for Easter. It’s on the UPS truck right now.

Oh crud oh crud oh crud oh crud.
