So I need to either 1) convince her that she can trust God and continue NFP, 2) stall as long as I can hoping that her heart will soften, or 3) give in to her desired course of action out of love for her. I am banking right now that #2 will lead to #1, but in the meantime she is using #1 on me and trying to convince me on #3, while also hoping that #2 will lead to #3.
While recognizing that primarily and ultimately that this is God’s job and responsibility, even though he will certainly use your convincing arguments (and pleas…😉 ).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the entire concern here is the posibility of pregnancy while she is in her current condition and to possibly prevent harm to a child due to her medication.

It’s easy to rule out hormonal contraceptives since that will just make things worse. Othe rmethods can be ruled out for moral reasons.

That brings me back to NFP. What was your training with NFP? Have you taken classes? Have you dicussed with your teachers why you conceived when you didnt’ expect it? I think answering these questions will help with #1.

For me they can in general, but not for her. She still doesn’t see the immorrality of using a condom or even sterilization, and she cannot just take the Church’s word on it (because of her current mistrust of the Church). Besides, I have yet to find a convincing argument for why condom use or sterilization (for example) is immoral, which makes it very difficult to discuss a necessity for NFP rationally with anyone, especially my wife and family.

Despite my skepticism, I am fine taking the Church’s word on it, but my wife is not in the same position.

I think we can get off the Corinthians discussion now. It seems to be sidetracking from the issue at hand since, I believe, Javelin’s moved past that argument now.

Some doctors tend to go for the extreme treatment because they simply don’t want to waste the time. I know this from experience and it just about killed me. Now I always get more than one opinion. I’d really be shocked if someone at Creighton hasn’t delved into the bipolar area.

You might want to explain to Jean that nobody can really make a plan to last a lifetime because life changes. Look how the bipolar issue has already changed things for you. Not all changes are for the worst though. It could be quite possible a miracle could occur or that just plain old medical treatments could change things so life’s not so hard. Sometimes it’s best to take life in bitesize chunks.

From what I understand, Zoloft has had a lot of success with bipolar people. Maybe you can find a doctor who will start off with that rather than jumping to the heavy duty stuff.

As far as nursing, while it’s usually best for a baby, it’s not necessary. I have many friends who don’t nurse simply because it never works for them and their kids are just fine.

You might want to try the Creighton model NFP and find a “counselor” (not sure of the title) to work with. This isn’t just a class it’s a weekly meeting with a person who specializes in the area who goes over your charts in much detail. Much more closely monitored. My OB has one in her office. Creighton should be able to refer you to one in your area. I have a few friends who absolutely need to avoid pregnancy and they’ve been using this method even through irregular cycles without fail.

Prayers continued!

Please don’t presume to tell me what I do or do not think. In recognizing that not even the Church teaches this issue as completely black and white, I am trying to learn how it all fits into my situation. Looking at the merits of every option available does not make me some evil heretic blaspheming against God for purely selfish, hedonistic reasons. If I was really that selfish about it and didn’t genuinely care about God’s will in my life, I would be snipped already and not participating in this forum.
I apoligize.

Javelin I have no intention to make you sound like what you were saying above. Seriously, I am sorry. And I don’t presume to tell you anything about what you think or don’t. I was only trying to give you advice and I tried that by giving one view. I did not say that you would be dambed if you did or dambed if you don’t. I was just trying to present you with the best advice that I thought I could give you. Apparently it looked better to me than it must have looked on the other side of your monitor. I don’t want it to be a teeter totter effect of post after post.

So for my part, I leave you with that.

Good luck, God bless

It ate my post. Must’ve hit the send button twice.

Maybe you could explain to Jean that it’s not a good idea to make permanent decisions at the beginning of the battle since life changes. Look how the bipolar problem has already changed your life. Not all changes are for the worst though. It could very well end up via miracle or via medicine that the situation is “taken care of”. Sometimes it’s better to take life in bite size chunks.

I’m betting that someone at Creighton has dealt with the bipolar issue. Not only that, from the NFP users I know, they seem to have the most thorough method. You don’t just have to take a class but you can meet with a “specialist” (not sure what they are called) who goes over the charting in great detail with you on a, I believe, weekly basis. I have friends that have to avoid and they’ve been using this method for a long time. It’s even worked for them with irregular cycles. Some of them will actually sleep in a separate room to avoid the temptation. I, personally, would find this a good thing to do because we would probably easily give in to temptation. Still trying to figure out how we made it through the dating and engagement period!

Many doctors, probably for their convenience, usually jump to the most extreme treatment first. I have first hand experience with this and I’m still trying to recover from a guy who just about killed me. I always get more than one opinion now before I settle on a doctor. I’m hearing good things about Zoloft and bipolar.

As far as nursing…It’s a great thing but it’s not for everyone. I know several people who don’t do it and their kids are OK. You can’t count on it for spacing children anyway. I was nursing with my when I got pregnant with my last two.

I am sorry, too jegow. My replies to you have been a bit harsh. I appreciate your desire to help very much, and wish you the best as well.

Sorry for the double posts! I didn’t realize we were on to page two!

What’s Jean’s mistrust of the Church about? Sorry if I missed this.

Hi everyone. I would like to hear any wisdom you may wish to share on a difficult decision I need to make. I will try to give you as much pertinent information as possible, although it is impossible to say everything.

Basically, I would like people’s opinions on birth control. My wife feels a strong need for it right now; I basically disagree that it is necessary, but understand where she is coming from. Some background on the situation before you pass judgement (share your opinion)…

You question involves sacramental Theology. The Marriage is a Sacrament. The act of consummation is the grace filled action. Your question about BC indicates that perhaps you should read a bit on Sacramental Theology and the reasons. Simply put, any interference with the natural action of any Sacrament is sacrilege, applicable to ALL sacraments.
