I’m trying to find an answer to a moral dilemma & maybe some of you can help me. I don’t know whether this is the correct forum for this kind of thing. If it isn’t, please feel free to move it moderators.
On Christmas night I took a new prescription, as directed on the bottle. My doctor had said to take 3 of these pills before bed. I did & I got horribly sick about two hours later. I felt as if electrical shocks were coursing through my body, yet I could not wake up enough to do much at bout it. I was able to wake my husband up. He took me to the Emergency Room at 2AM & there began more horror. I don’t remember much of what happened, but my husband & my daughter (he’d called her) have told me a lot. The ER, people could not wake me, either. I sometimes could hear my voice & it sounded strange, the words were slurred & sometimes made no sense.
The ER doctor told my family that I’d had a stroke. I’m 68 yrs. old & can remember wondering about that myself. I was admitted into the hospital & put through several tests. I was subjected to an MRI, after I began to become more alert… HORRIBLE!! for someone with a touch of claustraphobia…I had a Cat Scan, an EKG. & a sonogram.
Later, my doctor came to my room, asked me what I had done the night before that was different than I usually did. I told him that I’d taken my new prescription. My wonderful husband had grabbed the new bottle of pitlls & another bottle that I regularly take & stuck them in his pocket before we left home & the doctor asked to see them. He immediately knew the answer…the prescription had been written for 10mg. tablets, but had been
filled with
**100mg. tablets **by mistake. Instead of taking a total of 30mg., I had followed the directions on the bottle & taken **300 mg. **
After some detective work. we learned that the mistake had been made at the pharmacy & they admitted to that. It’s a big “chain-type” pharmacy & it gave me no problem when I, days later, went to talk to them about paying for the hospital stay & all of those tests. In fact they said that my doctor had called them about the mistake & were expecting me. They told me that they carry a malpractice insurance for just such mistakes.
Now, here’s my problem. My daughter (who is a district manager for an insurance co.) said that I should also ask for $3,000. for “pain & suffering”. While I had PLENTY of that, as did my family, It doesn’t “feel right” to ask for recompense. I’m asking myself, what does God want me to
do & I’m not getting an answer. I would appreciate some advice as I have to give my answer this week.
