If I go onto a person’s page and they have bad things on there. I leave and unfollow them. About 1 month later I go onto the page to see if bad things are still on there so that I can follow them again and I see bad things. Is that a sin? and if it is a sin, is it mortal?

Friend,

Don’t trouble yourself. My Spiritual Father explained it to me this way: That there is a difference between seeing something, and looking at something. Are you trying to look at bad images? It’s like looking at something edifying on Youtube and all of a sudden a bad image pops up on an advertisement. You click out and dismiss it without a second thought. You saw the image, but you didn’t linger on it. Perhaps you should reflect on whether or not it is good for you to follow this person on social media, but that is something else.

Have you spoken to your Spiritual Father?

It’s unclear what you are talking about here but I am assuming you may be talking about visiting a friend’s Facebook page and making a judgement on whether or not you should continue the friendship based on the friend’s activity/posts. If this is not correct I apologize.

I’m not sure if that’s sinful, though it’s definitely judgmental, which isn’t always a bad thing either. Have you thought about reaching out to your friend with concerns about their well being? Be advised that this may be met with negativity. You’ll need to make the judgement call on whether or not it’s worth it to you to reach out.

If it’s FaceBook you are talking about, I can’t imagine you WON’T see alot of garbage. Even if your good friend doesn’t post it, one of his crazy friends might.
Just skip it. There are much better things on the internet to read that will lift you, educate you, and inform you properly.
We’re going back to watching train wrecks and feed Christians to the lions almost, LOL

It’s nuts out there.
Be at peace.

I used to be friends on Facebook with a young person, not a relationship of substance. She’s bipolar. Unpredictable. Abusive. (Sigh)

She started posting “bad” things that I didn’t want to see. When she migrated to a new identity, I quietly chose not to follow. I pray for her, but admit to experiencing curiosity about what she is up to. It is a temptation against purity and modesty.

I call on St Rose of Lima as my example in fighting this temptation. The saint chose to deny her curiosity even in simple everyday things. This small penance is an effective tool for strengthening spiritual discipline.

Identify the curiosity (temptation).
Deny it.
Laugh at its powerlessness!
Give thanks.

So do you think it was bad of me to see if the person I unfollow turned over a new leaf and stopped posting bad things?

Stop going back! Make a clean break. Talk to Father during your next confession, which should be at regular intervals, right?
